What Americans Really Think About Socialism

Bernie Sanders health care jobs medicare trillion ten years socialismA new Gallup poll confirms what other surveys have reported: A disturbingly high percentage of Americans, about 4 in 10, now look favorably on socialism. Forty-seven percent of Americans even say they would vote for a socialist candidate for president.

What’s going on here? Is Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., that persuasive? Are that many Americans ready to abandon the free enterprise system that has made America the most prosperous nation in human history?

Far from it. The same poll revealed that a majority of Americans, 62%, continue to endorse the free market rather than government when it comes to decisions affecting the economy. A majority also favor free enterprise rather than government control over health care and higher education.

These seemingly contradictory results, Gallup said, reveal that Americans are divided on how to describe the current state of the U.S. economy and determine its future direction. I believe they are divided for the following reasons:

  • Many Americans are still hurting from the Great Recession of 2008 when they lost confidence in the free market and began looking for alternatives like socialism.
  • There is a generational gap with younger Americans accustomed to government playing a major role in their lives and older Americans still quoting Barry Goldwater, “Any government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take everything you have.”
  • A powerful trifecta of politicians, educators, and media elite have stepped up their campaign to promote socialism as the answer to America’s economic woes. It is not coincidental that Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., almost won the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination backed as he was by the political-academic-media complex.

This trifecta has been working to turn America into a socialist state since Franklin D. Roosevelt said in a 1932 campaign address: “The first obligation of government is the protection of the welfare and well-being, indeed the very existence of its citizens.” No president had ever before promised such a sweeping responsibility of the federal government.

At the same time, John Dewey and his colleagues at Columbia University were turning out educators committed to “democratic socialism,” an effort reinforced by the same 1960s radicals who are tenured university professors today. And all along a media elite evolved that endorsed a central place for government.

However, all is not lost. There is a powerful counter-establishment committed to the preservation and protection of our free market system and the checks and balances of the Constitution.

Groups including the National Rifle Association, the Right to Work Committee, and the Right to Life Committee exist to counter our politicians. To counter the academy, we have groups like The Heritage Foundation and 65 state think tanks from Maine to California. To counter the media elite, we have Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, The Wall Street Journal, and a burgeoning presence on social media.

The freedom movement has one more priceless asset—the truth. Socialism has been tried in some 40 countries over the past century, and it has failed every time and everywhere. The United Kingdom, India, Denmark, and Israel all tried socialism, and after decades of misery, rejected it.

The truth is that planning leads inevitably to tyranny while free enterprise leads to the American dream.

Not this American woman. Socialism is for lazy people. People who won’t apply themselves to the values of honest work for honest pay. Socialism is so against American values.

Do people who want socialism really know what they are saying? They obviously are taking for granted the things that free enterprise and Americanism have given them that they wouldn’t have with socialism. Scares me!

Never underestimate the ignorance of many Americans. They have been conditioned through propaganda to embrace “free” stuff from government at other taxpayer’s expense. It is the very same promise made by Hugo Chavez with the same result for America if implemented. P.T. Barnum said “there’s a sucker born every minute” and these people are living proof. Offer them snake-oil and they line up to buy it. The sellers seek political power regardless of the damage done. Keep your powder dry because it could get very ugly.

Since Socialism ans Communism are “kissin’ cousins” this Ronald Reagan quote sums it up.

“How do you tell a communist? Well, it’s someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-communist? It’s someone who understands Marx and Lenin.”

Take note, not one Socialist/Communist country produces a decent car or truck. Not one global fast food chain or pizzeria.
None have sent probes beyond our solar system.

They have, however, produced Presdents for life, dictators galore, and millions of peasants, weapons of war and huge armies. They have produced polluted air and waterways, state of the art heavy factories for war manufacturing.

Their people stand in lines awaiting food and medical rations. They have free college, but they choose what you will study. Free clothes come in several styles of military uniform. Housing is a dull apartment barely capable of being called a home. No nice subdivisions, no non-censored movies or tv, no wifi in many instances.

Still sound like a Utopian dream?

I agree with Kathy, I worked since I was 14 till a health problem at 64. I do not believe in Socialism/Communism. I am an AMERICAN born of AMERICAN PARENTS. The left socialist need to be sent packing to a socialist country! They don’t like our Values, our Flag nor our Constitution for We The People ! I want my country back!

The Apostle Paul stated, “That if you don’t work you don’t eat.” Blame the parent for not teaching their children not to work. Blame the NEA for forcing the teachers to teach socialism in school. Blame Satan who is behind all of the evil that is in this world.

Do not forget Venezuela.

Only ignorant people and fools want socialism. The young today, being a me, me, me generation more than any other like the idea of free everything. They’re not smart enough to ask…who pays for all this?

It really is hard to fathom for those of us who have lived long enough to have witnessed these many failed attempts at socialism. Due to a poor knowledge of history and limited experience, some in the younger gen have been successfully fooled to think socialism is better than what they see today. It’s as if everything great snd true is slowly being shredded. We must take this seriously.

History repeats itself because there are a limited number of possibilities in terms of govt. Boiled down, there are only liberty and tyranny. The appeal of socialism is perennial owing to certain facets of human nature, specifically greed, laziness and envy. There will never be a time when the siren song of socialism is silent. We need to do a much better job of communicating reality to the young. Most of us have kids, gkids, nieces and nephews. Some will listen, some will not, but relying on the schools to properly teach them reality has obvious has brought us to the edge of the abyss.

Get’em hooked on freebies, and when you promise them more, they’ll vote for you. The mantra of democratic politicians.

I have said for years the younger generation is being brainwashed. Now they don’t even know what they are doing. Sad that the education system it tell students “What to Think” not “How to Think”. NO!!! The answer is not in the back of the book, and NO the government will not take care of you. “BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU OWN ACTIONS” and “THINK FOR YOURSELF”. …..Don’t be a sheep, use common sense and logic.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah glad i am old

With socialism, people line up for bread.
With capitalism, bread is lined up for the people.

Q: What did socialists have before candles?
A: Electricity!!

Fox News is promoting the Democrat/Leftist viewpoint by giving them so much air time to spew their lies. And there are many other voices on radio who have done a great job of keeping Conservatives educated and informed such as Michael Savage, who for decades has hammered the anti-socialism/communism message and does deep instruction on history for listeners. Thank God for our Patriots such as these! Every generation needs to get re-educated on conservative issues. We’re only one generation away from losing our freedom, I believe someone said. Now I believe it’s only one election away from losing our freedom.

From my years in Catholic school (1958 on) there was always some kind of socialist spin being puked forward by some Roman Catholic apparatchik dogma shouter standing in front of the room bellowing and bloviating Comerad Marx “light”. From the end of the Vietnam War (1975) onward the schools have been pro leftist thought pro socialist economic/thought dogma. Your public grade school – middle school – high school teachers and college-university professors began their “nudge-nudge – wink – wink” very gentle almost imperceptible introduction of socialism……and alluding to it’s founder communism to all mush brains in their charge. Those teaching in the mid 70’s we the teachers of the graduates that have perpetuated to this day the drive to destroy this Republic with socialism. Socialism: Your current example is Venezuela. 60 years ago Venezuela was 4th on the world economic freedom index. Today they are 179th and their citizens are… Read more »
