Trump to Impose 5 Percent Tariff on Mexican Imports Over Illegal Immigration

Trump impose tariff mexican illegal immigrationPresident Donald Trump has announced on late May 30 a 5 percent tariff on all goods coming from Mexico.

“On June 10th, the United States will impose a 5% Tariff on all goods coming into our Country from Mexico, until such time as illegal migrants coming through Mexico, and into our Country, STOP,” he said in a Twitter post.

“The Tariff will gradually increase until the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied, at which time the Tariffs will be removed. Details from the White House to follow.”

Trump told reporters earlier on May 30 that he was planning “a major statement” that would be his biggest and most “dramatic” so far on the border.

“I’m not closing the borders, I’m doing something else,” he said, adding that the statement “will have to do with people crossing the border illegally.”

Official Statement

Shortly after Trump’s late night tweet, the White House released the President’s statement on its website.

Trump wrote that Mexico has been passively allowing illegal immigrants through its borders, despite its “very strong immigration laws,” and could easily stop the flow of illegal immigrants by returning them to their home countries.

He noted that the hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants that come through Mexico to enter the United States have caused an “emergency and extraordinary threat” to the national security and economy of the United States.

“This sustained influx of illegal aliens has profound consequences on every aspect of our national life—overwhelming our schools, overcrowding our hospitals, draining our welfare system, and causing untold amounts of crime,” he wrote.

“Gang members, smugglers, human traffickers, and illegal drugs and narcotics of all kinds are pouring across the Southern Border and directly into our communities.”

He wrote that Mexico has not been treating the United States “fairly” for many years by failing crack down on the surge of Central American migrants from countries including El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, and that “It must end NOW!”

“Mexico must step up and help solve this problem,” he said.

“We welcome people who come to the United States legally, but we cannot allow our laws to be broken and our borders to be violated.

“For years, Mexico has not treated us fairly—but we are now asserting our rights as a sovereign Nation.”

The president said that if Mexico can alleviate the crisis at the Southern border, by dramatically reducing or eliminating the number of illegal aliens crossing, the United States may remove the tariffs.

“If the crisis persists, however, the Tariffs will be raised to 10 percent on July 1, 2019,” Trump said.

He added that the tariffs will increase yet again to 15 percent on Aug. 1, 20 percent on Sept. 1, and 25 percent on Oct.1 if Mexico still has not taken action.

Trump ended by saying, “As President of the United States, my highest duty is the defense of the country and its citizens.

“A nation without borders is not a nation at all.  I will not stand by and allow our sovereignty to be eroded, our laws to be trampled, or our borders to be disrespected anymore.”

It’s unclear whether the announcement will have any impact on the new United States-Mexico-Canada trade deal.

While this approach will no doubt effect 80 percent of the Mexican exports to the United States and get Mexico’s attention to do more to stem the flow of illegal aliens from central America passing through Mexico into the United States, another approach might be equally useful without giving the Democrats a reason to not approve the USMCA trade deal and further bashing President Trump for no legitimate reason. President Trump could instruct the United States Treasury to immediately bar all remittance payments being transacted between the United States and Mexico until Mexico carries out the same items President Trump is asking for. By blocking the $20 billion to $30 billion dollars sent annually to Mexico by illegal aliens, the impact to the Mexican economy will be nearly as severe as these proposed tariffs, but without any negative consequences for the American economy or provide any ammunition to Democrats for… Read more »

Thank you Mr. President. It is so refreshing to have a president with a back bone and one who is trying to look out for the country while the progressives are attempting to destroy it.

Trump speaks the truth again. Apparently the drug cartels run Mexico. How can Congress ignore this crisis occurring at our border. I say shut down the border until Mexico or Congress does its job!

Thank you Donald trump for standing up for America……as a Californian who is appalled at what our new governor, Gavin Newsome’s insane pandering proposal, to provide free healthcare to millions of illegal aliens, something needs to be done to stem the southern border invasion. Democrats reckless disregard for our nations sovereignty, just to gain voter base, is treasonous…no citizen should place their own prosperity above the safety and future of our country….Newsome is collaborating with foreign invaders….just as Vidkun Quisling of Norway layed down with the Germans in WWII.

Mexico has to stop these criminal aliens immediately. Turn them ALL back at THIER southern border

des

these tariffs can be used to alleviated the burdens on our welfare system, health care, social security and schools

I think this is a great idea and combined with PaulE’s idea as a backup plan or in combination with, I believe we would see fast action from Mexico. I do wonder how many socialist judges will exceed their authority and try to block this though.

Using a tariff to pressure Mexico to help us curb the immigration problem is one way, although largely ineffective, to attack the problem. The best way would be simply to simply SUSPEND ALL IMMIGRATION (not just southern border illegals, unless he want to limit entry to specific groups) for a period of time to put direct pressure Congress to act and permit CBP to turn all (or those designated) away –NO entry even for Asylum claims! This is permitted by USC Title 8, Sec 1182(10) subpara (f), supported at the same time by the recent US Sup Ct ruling in Hawaii vs Trump. POTUS MUST distinguish that he is NOT CLOSING THE BORDER–IT REMAINS OPEN for trade and commerce–ONLY STOPPING IMMIGRATION as he designates!!! I think that this has been done before on the immigration issue by other Presidents. POTUS need to rethink accepting illegals and then transporting them to… Read more »

Another part of the proposal is that Mexico could start helping to build the wall either financially or thru physical labor & their part of the wall must meet the standards of the whole wall contract.

Todd Taylor

Go for it! It is time the Mexican governments starts paying their way.

I think the president is right to do this at the border And god bless him

Bruce Miller

What is the guy supposed to do???? The US House of Representatives should be introducing legislation that will codify holding periods, immediate repatriation of anyone entering illegally, new wall constructions, etc, etc, etc. But Pelosi will do NONE OF THE ABOVE. Her goal is to get as many illegals into this country as she can, handing out freebees to all with the understanding they vote as she tells them to. Trump, unlike his Republican/Democrat predecessors who talked tough but did nothing, is actually doing something. Is it the best approach or even an effective one? I don’t know. But the status quo ain’t working. The latest data from the DHS shows that between 25% and 30% of adults with children show they have no biological relationship. How many of those flooding across the borders and subsequently released are working for the Mexican and Central American drug cartels? The Democrats don’t… Read more »

Trump is RIGHT

10% tariff on all remittances to Mexico. That is their second highest income. Hit where it only hurts them not used well. Those funds can not only build a wall but support all if the border security issues without out taxes being involved.

Wonderful idea. Should have started along time ago. Mexico is run by the Cartels. And they are working with our enmities to bring our Country down. I would prefer 60,000 well armed troops along our southern border. While we are building a 40’ tall anti climb see trough wall with spikes on top. But guess they don’t really care what I want. Anyway I can dream. Cry wolf long enough and everyone just stops listening. Well when the war starts, then it will be to late. Hope you all have plenty of food and water stored up along with guns n ammo. Have a feeing I’ll be saying “Told You So” before long.
