With age, our risk of falling increases

About one in four people aged 65 and over fall each year. That risk grows as people reach their 70s and 80s. More than half of people over age 80 fall each year. Falling causes nearly 9,500 senior deaths each year. In fact, falls are the number one cause of death from injury among people 65 and older. That’s why fall prevention is so important.

Exercise can help prevent falls:

Experts recommend at least 150 minutes of exercise each week. While most exercises are healthful in some way, some are better than others concerning fall prevention. Walking, for example, while good for your health, doesn’t have much impact on muscle strength. Strength training, balance, range-of-motion and coordination are the best exercises to help reduce falls.

Starting an exercise program at any age takes self-discipline, so you owe it to yourself to find the right motivational tool for you. There are many smartphone apps that are dedicated towards exercises in terms of fall prevention. They can guide you through the right exercises, and the
right way to do them. These apps can track your exercise, keep you accountable, and monitor your progress. Before too long, you’ll notice you start feeling better too.

Not all falls can be prevented. That’s why it’s important to take care of yourself in other ways, too. Make sure you have a good way to receive help should a fall occur.
