My husband is self employed running a small home repair company. I am working with 3 different agencies as a nurse giving direct patient care in the home or outpatient setting. We do not have access to employee insurance because neither of us are employed full time. Benefitted part time is 36 hours per week at any of my companies. I found an individual high deductible PPO plan with Anthem Blue Cross pre ACA for $500/month. This worked for us because we are both healthy 60+ year olds. With ACA that plan was cancelled, the replacement offered was $1036/month. I went shopping on the Exchange. All the Bonze plans were similar in cost. I spoke with an insurance case manager. I determined the differences in the plans offered, such as Blue Cross has a very limited network and a hard line out of network policy. It was also recommended to have 2 individual plans instead of 1 family plan to divide the doubled deductible and OOP. You cannot purchase 2 individual plans for 1 family through the Exchange. There is only the family plan for 2 people who are married.
We then after much angst determined we would try to stay married. I did not purchase through the Exchange. I went direct to Healthnet and purchased two individual plans for a total roughly of $1040 per month. After a year we were notified the prices were going up to a total of roughly $1200/month. We had only minor health events easily handled by an urgent care or MD office, We do not use prescription drugs regularly.
At this time the cost of health insurance was over 20% of our income, we applied for catastrophic coverage for that reason and got catastrophic plans through Healthnet. I hope 2016 does not have any more surprises for us.
