Should I Change My Medicare Coverage if I’m Moving Out of State?

moving

Dear AMAC,

I have Original Medicare, a Part D prescription drug plan, and a Medigap. I am moving from New York to Arizona in a few months. Do I need to change my Medicare coverage?

Stacey (Ithaca, NY)

Dear Stacey,

This is a great question!  There are a few things you will want to consider when moving that can affect your coverage. You may need time to make changes, and since your move is in the next few months, now is the perfect time to start considering your options.

Your Original Medicare will not be affected by your move because it does not have a network, so you can continue to use it throughout the country at any provider that accepts it. However, you should update your information with the Social Security Administration to ensure that you receive important communications.

Your Medigap plan will not need to be changed either since these plans are portable and accepted anywhere in the country that accepts Original Medicare. You may want to check with your carrier to see what your new premium will look like in your new area and if any state specific rules may apply.

Medicare Advantage plans and Prescription Drug plans do have service areas, so if you move to a new area that your plan is not offered in, you will have to switch plans. The good news is that you will have a Special Enrollment Period which gives you 30 days prior to your move and up to 63 days after to change your plan.

I hope this information helps you plan your upcoming move!

Sincerely,

Your Medicare Advisor
