There are many dangers of speeding. Going faster than the speed limit is an unsafe practice. People who speed may encounter the following risks:
- Loss of vehicle control
- Increased rollover incidences
- Reduced reaction time
Each may lead to serious injury or death. Increased speed can be particularly dangerous during inclement weather and when crowded or poor road conditions are present.
The CDC explains that the relationship between driving speed and the risk of crash and/or fatalities is well established. In 2019, 26% of all motor vehicle fatalities occurred in crashes in which at least one driver was speeding. They explain that automated speed camera enforcement is effective in reducing speed and speed-related crashes.
Speeding increases the risk of accidents as it interferes with the driver’s ability to control the vehicle and stop the car. Per t-driver, “In a high-speed crash, a passenger vehicle cannot handle the force of the crash. As crash speeds get very high, airbags and seat belts do not work as well to keep passengers safe.” They explain that if a driver doubles their vehicle speed from 30 to 60, the braking distance does not become twice as long. It becomes four times as far! They also provide another example. Traveling at 55 mph, it takes about 6 seconds to stop the vehicle. In that time, the vehicle will travel approximately 302 feet before coming to a stop- more than the length of a football field!
So, what can people do?
- Wear seat belts for safety
- Observe the law and the speed limit
- Watch for speed limit changes
- Slow down when driving around curves
- Consider road and weather conditions
- Help drivers be aware of their speed
- Don’t follow other cars too closely
- Slow down in work zones
- Don’t speed just because others are doing it
Safety counts
Some may wonder why driving the speed limit matters. Understand that driving is an immense responsibility. Remember that how you drive can impact others. Reckless driving is dangerous. High-speed crashes can negatively affect how well seat belts and airbags function to keep the driver and passengers safe. Thus, all drivers should strive to drive legally.
