Packing Tips

Taking a trip soon and dreading packing? If so, this article will prove most beneficial!

Packing counts!

A bump up in travel can occur with the onset of warmer weather, with spring travelers rushing to sunny destinations before it gets hot. But, regardless of when you travel or how far you go, it’s important to know how to efficiently pack luggage. Let’s delve into the topic to see why packing counts! Enjoy these luggage packing tips.

Packing tips 101 and beyond:

  • Know that it’s difficult to remember everything. Make a packing list to reduce brain overload.
  • Stick to bringing essentials. These are the items you absolutely need for your trip such as tops or bottoms.
  • Use a packing method to decide what to bring. Study up to see which one is right for you.
  • For example, consider the 5-4-3-2-1 packing method whereby one packs five tops, four bottoms, three dresses or rompers and three pairs of shoes, two swimsuits and two bags, one hat, one watch, and one pair of sunglasses.
  • Or consider the 3 x 3 x 3 method to include three tops, three bottoms, and three pairs of shoes. This provides 27 options (combinations) of what to wear.
  • Some experts suggest creating a “capsule wardrobe.” This means selecting a variety of basic clothing that can easily be mixed and matched. To learn about capsule wardrobes, click here
  • It’s advised to stick with neutrals to include black, navy, tan, and white apparel. These colors are interchangeable.
  • Carefully decide what to bring. Check the weather and scheduled events so that you are prepared.
  • Bring limited jackets that can be layered over clothing to accommodate weather changes.
  • Wear, rather than pack, a heavier coat or raincoat that otherwise might take up too much space in luggage.
  • Always pack travel-friendly fabrics. Note that woven fabrics like cotton twill or linen are prone to wrinkling, whereas liquid knits do quite well at staying wrinkle-free.
  • If you’re packing a dress, consider bringing a neutral color and add lightweight dusters over top for versatility.
  • Pack a few accessories to dress outfits up, such as a tie, fancy scarf, attractive belt, or fun costume jewelry. Note that simple accessories can easily take you from day to night.
  • Limit footwear. Bring (or wear) a practical pair of casual walking shoes. Then pack a pair of business/dress shoes that work well with multiple outfits.
  • For hot weather vacations, also pack sandals. For cold weather vacations, consider a multipurpose pair of boots instead.
  • Keep cosmetics together. When packing them into luggage, place liquids in resealable bags. Wrap dry hard powdered products like eyeshadow in bubble wrap or tissue paper to cushion them during transport.
  • Whenever possible, fold, roll and compress your clothes to save space.
  • After packing your essentials, should you suddenly discover empty space in your suitcase, decide what “extras” you want to pack.
  • But do limit the “extras” to avoid overstuffing your luggage.
  • Plan on buying souvenirs? If so, remember to keep some open luggage space or bring an additional tote.
