WASHINGTON, DC, June 23 — We have to admit that it’s pretty gutsy of the progressive socialists in Congress to pick a fight with God. But that is just what they’ve done by using their flimsy majority in Congress to seek enactment of the Equality Act of 2021– a law that would challenge the notion that when He created life on earth, God mistakenly made only male and female versions of human beings.
The House passed H.R. 5, the Equality Act, a couple of months ago, and the Senate is slated to take up the legislation soon. https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/5
The U.K. enacted a similar law not so long ago, and attorney Wendy Murphy, an adjunct professor of sexual violence law at New England Law|Boston, says it has resulted in some pretty dodgy results.
In a recent Opinion article in the Boston Herald, Murphy told that: “A woman in the U.K. named Maya Forstater was recently punished by her university for saying there are only two sexes. Another U.K. woman is being criminally charged for publicly saying that sex and gender identity are different, and a law student in Scotland who said out loud in a class that ‘women have vaginas’ was investigated by her school for violating the civil rights of trans people.”
The fact of the matter is the majority of Americans were brought up to treat people with dignity because it is the right thing to do.
And those that discriminate must face consequences. But the proposed law goes way beyond enforcing discrimination laws; it would create an Orwellian nightmare, particularly as regards belief in God and God’s laws. For example:
- Churches could be faced with fines if they have separate restrooms for men and women
- Church-sponsored shelters would be required to let men who decide to call themselves women to have access to shelters for women survivors of domestic violence
- Church-based facilities such as schools would be required to hire those who have an LGBTQ lifestyle [Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, and those who call themselves Transgendered and those who are questioning their sexual orientation]
HR. 5, it should be noted, is an equal opportunity offender that imposes its own interpretation of religion, whether it be Evangelical, Jewish, Catholic, Mormon, Muslim, or any religion that is based on the notion that human beings are either men or women.
Do we care? A new Rasmussen-Summit.org survey shows that Americans do care big time. The poll found that “82% of Likely U.S. Voters think freedom of religion is important to a healthy American society, including 67% who say it’s Very Important.”
Dr. Jeff Myers, president of Summit Ministries, pointed out that, “This research affirms that the American people overwhelmingly support the continued protection of the Constitutional right of freedom of religion, and oppose policies requiring churches and faith-based charities and organizations to compromise their deeply-held religious beliefs. Yet, leaders in Washington, DC, are aggressively pushing forward on legislative measures such as the mislabeled Equality Act, which specifically strips away religious freedom protections. In an era of hyper-partisanship, freedom of religion retains broad, bi-partisan support among Democrats, Republicans, and Independents.”
Perhaps one of the most insidious aspects of the Equality Act is how it might impact our children. The Heritage Foundation scrutinized the legislation and found that schools will be required to enforce new sexual orientation and gender-identity rules, such as allowing boys and girls to share bathrooms. More important, says the Foundation, “Counseling that has proven to help children suffering from gender dysphoria reconcile with their bodies will no longer be considered an acceptable approach. This means that parents will be left without therapeutic alternatives that do not cause irreversible harm to their children’s bodies.” The Foundation noted that “A judge in Ohio terminated the rights of parents who opposed administering testosterone to their underage daughter and wanted her to go to counseling for gender dysphoria instead.” So HR-5 is another wolf in sheep’s clothing designed to look like a Bill that appears to protect Americans from discrimination but creates hurdles for people with gender issues as well as nullifying religion and God’s Law.
