WASHINGTON, DC, Nov 7 — At a time when Americans are struggling to make ends meet, illegal migrants holed up in so-called Sanctuary States are getting paid off with our tax dollars. They are receiving millions of unemployment dollars despite the fact that illegals are not eligible for unemployment benefits, according to the Immigration Reform Law Institute [IRLI]. The IRLI says that New York State, Colorado, and Washington DC have, thus far, given migrants more than $2.7 million.
“If, for example, New York revamped their program and made it permanent; the D.C. City Council enlarged its fund; and California successfully implemented its own proposal, American taxpayers would be faced with an utterly staggering price tag of roughly $4,350,000,000 every year,” says the Institute.
Meanwhile, says Senior VP Kristi Rodriguez at the Nationwide Retirement Institute, American families are skipping meals due to the lingering inflationary cycle. “As the price of health care and basic necessities continue to reach record highs, Americans have been forced to make tough decisions that sacrifice their health and wellbeing.”
The Britannica ProCon.Org describes itself as “a non-biased information source.” It recently provided what it called the top three pros and cons as they pertain to Sanctuary Cities, noting that “There are 11 states, 40 cites, and 143 counties listed as sanctuary jurisdictions by the Center for Immigration Studies.” On the positive side of the issue, procon.org lists “better relationships between undocumented immigrants and law enforcement … Sanctuary policies are legal … [they] protect undocumented immigrants.” It’s up to you to determine whether these so-called benefits mitigate the arguments against the existence of sanctuaries: that they “harbor criminals, creating a dangerous environment for US citizens … defy federal laws to which state and local governments are bound … prevent local and state police officers from doing their jobs.”
It should be noted, says one observer, that the devil-may-care attitudes of the unabashed progressive authorities in sanctuary cities such as New York put the law abiding citizens of their cities and states in danger. A report by the Epoch Times reveals that authorities in that city, in 2019, set more than 7,500 illegal aliens free, including murderers and sex offenders. The news outlet cited Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva, a Democrat, who said “We’re having people [from] out of county, out of state, coming here to L.A. to do home invasion robberies, burglaries … There is no greater threat to public safety than a million undocumented immigrants who are afraid to report crime.”
Chicago, another town with the sanctuary city nickname “has become a lawless hellscape where weekends of double-digit shooting victims are the norm,” as the IRLI report put it. The Times noted that a few years back that city’s Mayor Lori Lightfoot “issued an executive order making illegal aliens eligible for all city benefits. The same year, she also signed a local ordinance that forbade city officials from working with ICE to detain illegal aliens, even those facing criminal charges or who were in the city’s gang database.
Congressman Tom McClintock [R-CA], the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, points out that when President Biden took office “we had restored operational control of our southern border. The wall was nearing completion. Court ordered deportations were finally being enforced. The Migrant Protection Protocols negotiated with Mexico had reduced the number of fraudulent asylum claims to a trickle. All that Biden needed to do was to continue these policies.” Instead he upended those protocols. The result, as McClintock put it, is that “we effectively have no borders. And if we have no borders, we cease to be a nation and instead become a vast international territory between Canada and Mexico.”
