Hobbies

It’s never too late to discover a new hobby. Not only is growing new talents entertaining, but it also gives the mind a healthy workout. Expanding one’s horizons by introducing new activities is stimulating for the brain, promoting higher thinking, and enhancing mood. Since hobbies are believed to trigger the brain’s natural reward system, those who enjoy pastimes are generally less likely to suffer from stress and depression.

Here are activities and an example of their impact:

ACTIVITIES BENEFITS
Checkers & chess Uses reasoning and problem-solving skills
Cooking Connects you to food history and others
Dancing Promotes agility and flexibility
Gardening Heals and empowers
Genealogy Fosters human connections
Learning a new language Boosts memory recall
Musical instrument playing Improves eye and hand coordination
Paper crafting Helps fine and gross motor skills
Photography Stimulates and improves creativity
Puzzle solving Teaches patience and perseverance
Swimming Builds endurance and muscle strength
Walking Enhances cardiovascular fitness
Woodworking Encourages analytical and logical thinking

The above activities demonstrate why hobbies are so important to living fit and healthful lives. Many require some physical or whole brain activities, meaning that the left and right sides of the brain are engaged in learning. Hobbies also provide opportunities to meet and gather with others who enjoy the same activities. This common ground is often the basis of friendships and beneficial relationships that can improve one’s quality of life.
