This article is part of a yearlong series exploring one foundational biblical word each month. This month, we are focusing on JOY. Subscribe to the Sunday Morning Newsletter and catch up on the entire series at amac.us/faith.

Two things are true about joy: we all want it, and it can feel incredibly hard to find.

As a result, we often seek it out through better jobs, nicer vacations, human relationships, material things, etc., etc…. and so often it slips away. Whether life is going well or feels heavy, that deep, lasting joy many of us long for can seem just out of reach.

That’s exactly why we’ve been spending time this month talking about joy from God’s perspective. We’ve looked at how real joy blooms as a fruit of the Spirit, the special joy God gives mothers, and how waiting can actually make joy sweeter. Today, Psalm 16:11 brings us to the very heart of the matter, the source of the joy we’re all looking for.

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

Where Real Joy Begins

Psalm 16 is one of David’s most well-known Psalms. In verse 5 he makes a powerful declaration:

“The LORD is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You hold my lot.”

In ancient Israel, every family received a “portion” – a piece of land as their inheritance when they entered the Promised Land. That land was their security, their provision, and their future. But David says something radical. He chooses God as his portion.

He’s basically saying, “I don’t find my deepest security or joy in land or in earthly possessions. The Lord Himself is my real inheritance.”

David wasn’t pretending life was easy. He faced real danger and difficulty. Yet because his security was in God and not in what he owned, he could look to the future with hope.

That’s where true joy starts for us too. Not in what we own or achieve, but in knowing we belong to God. When He is our chosen portion, He shows us the path of life. He doesn’t just point us toward something outside of Himself – He Himself is the path and the destination.

Fullness of Joy in His Presence

Look at this beautiful promise: “In your presence there is fullness of joy.”

This isn’t a little sprinkle of happiness. It’s not the temporary rush you get from good news. This is fullness, rich, complete, soul-satisfying joy that reaches every empty spot inside.

Jesus explained this so clearly in John 15. He told His disciples that He is the vine and we are the branches. Just as a branch can only bear fruit when it stays connected to the vine, we can only bear the fruit of joy when we remain in Him. He even said, “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full” (John 15:11).

Here’s the bottom line: we don’t have to manufacture joy on our own. And we can’t! Joy flows naturally when we draw near to God and stay connected to Him.

Pleasures That Actually Last

Back to Psalm 16:11: The verse ends with something that always catches my breath: “at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

In a world full of things that promise happiness but leave us emptier, God offers pleasures that last. Real peace. Unshakable love. The deep comfort of knowing you are fully known and fully loved.

Even on hard days, this changes everything.

So What Does This Mean for You?

If you’ve been longing for more joy, Psalm 16:11 gently invites you to stop chasing and start dwelling. Spend time in God’s presence through His Word, prayer, and worship. Let Him fill what only He can fill.

We don’t manufacture joy by trying harder or seeking it out in anything other than God Himself. We experience the fullness of joy by remaining in Christ – by staying closely connected to Him every day. This is what it really means to live in the presence of God.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that You are the source of real, lasting joy. In Your presence I find fullness, not just a little happiness, but the complete joy my heart was made for. Thank You for walking with me on the path of life and for the pleasures that last forever at Your right hand.

When those joyless moments arise, fill what’s lacking and strengthen what feels weak. Let Your joy overflow in my life so others can see how good You are.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
