The Chris Larkin  ALS Act is now law in the state of Texas! This is a huge win for Texans under 65 in need of Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans. The act was named in honor of Chris Larkin, a former Texas A&M football player and dedicated ALS advocate. Continue reading to learn about this monumental law.

What the Chris Larkin ALS Act Does

This bipartisan legislation helps people living with ALS, end-stage renal disease (ESRD), or qualifying disabilities access affordable Medigap plans under fair terms. Here’s what it does:

HB 2516 Becomes Law

Since it’s inception, the Chris Larkin ALS Act garnered support from a broad coalition led by the ALS Association, patient advocacy organizations, and other groups across Texas. In response to the bill, State Representative Ryan Guillen (HD 31) said “Texans battling serious conditions like ALS shouldn’t be punished with higher costs or fewer options because they’re under 65.” This past May, the Texas House unanimously passed HB 2516, the Chris Larkin ALS Act.

Who Is Chris Larkin?

Chris Larkin, a former tight end at Texas A&M, was diagnosed with ALS in October 2022. Since his diagnosis, Larkin worked tirelessly with his wife Cissy to raise ALS awareness. Together, they testified before the Texas Legislature, built coalitions, and inspired lawmakers to act.

Larkin’s courage and leadership embody the purpose of the new law. “It means a great deal to our family and to so many Texans who now have a better chance to afford the care they need,” remarked Larkin.

What’s Next for Texans under 65

People living with ALS endure “Overwhelming out-of-pocket costs, often exceeding $250,000 a year,” says Diana Arévalo of the ALS Association. By ensuring fair pricing and broader access, the law delivers financial protection for those most in need.

Now, the Chris Larkin ALS Act marks a turning point for Texans under 65 living with chronic health conditions. It expands access to Medigaps at fair rates and removes age-based barriers to coverage. If you are a Texas resident, under age 65, and qualify for Medicare, this law directly benefits you.
