Today’s burgers come in many forms… beef, bison, chicken, mushroom turkey, veggie, and more. A burger is simply a round-shaped patty formed with a savory product, and it can be fried or grilled and served on a bun.
But…all burgers are not built equally. Depending upon fat and nutrition content, plus the toppings and breading that get added, they can be healthy or not so healthy to consume.
Here are three tips to enjoying a healthy burger:
1) Go for lean meat. Per Men’s journal, “You’ll still get a hearty dose of protein, immune-boosting zinc, and vitamin B12, which you need to keep your nerves and blood healthy. Shop for it: Look for 95% lean ground beef, which has only 2 grams of heart unhealthy saturated fat and 140 calories per 3-ounce patty.”
2) Don’t assume all veggie patties are healthy. While many are made from vegetables, whole grains, and legumes like beans, some may have additives that render them chock full of calories and sodium. And some may have preservatives. Per Food Network’s Healthy Eats, “When it comes to veggie burgers, your best bet is to make your own. That way, YOU control the ingredients. You can even make a double batch and freeze half for later.”
3) Watch the under and over. So many extra calories can be added by processed bread and unhealthy condiments that contain sugar, salt, preservatives, and more. If a burger is truly good, it should not require extra fluff. Simply serve it on a fresh bed of lettuce along with your favorite nutritious toppings like fresh tomatoes and onions.
A good burger doesn’t need doctoring. Nor does it need wrapping in high-calorie, high-carb bread. But, if bread is a must-have, as it is for some, opt for healthier, whole-grain, or sprouted varieties that may offer health benefits. The bottom line is that a great burger is a great burger on its own, and it is reflected in its quality, healthy profile, and taste. Choose well, and if buying premade, always scrutinize the ingredients. It is well worth your time to do it!
