An Opinion Article by Dan Weber, president of the Association of Mature American Citizens
WASHINGTON, DC – The world was a dangerous place during World War I. It was even more dangerous during World War II. And, it was frightening enough during the Cold War that ensued. Then came the Korean War and Vietnam. And now, our valiant soldiers are maimed and killed in faraway deserts and barren lands as we seek to stem the threat posed by Jihad.
Meanwhile, we face a new kind of conflict today, one that is just as deadly and fearsome as any we faced in the past—perhaps even more so. This new insidious threat cannot be contained by trench warfare as the Allies waged in the First World War. It cannot be won with a massive invasion like the one that took place in Normandy 73 years ago. Nor will it abate with a truce as were those that were negotiated in Korea and Southeast Asia.
Unlike guns and cannons and missiles and such, ideologies are the deadly elements of the battles being fought in the 21st Century. They fuel a kind of insanity that was ushered in on September 11, 2001, and that continues to beget unexpected mayhem and death.
Perhaps, the reason this new warfare scares the living daylights out of us is because it requires no battlefields. The fighting is done on our streets, in our churches, and at festive occasions such as pop concerts. The theaters of operations are literally in our own backyards. The purpose of this anarchy is elusive. Is it conquest that drives the perpetrators? Or is it a malevolence that lurks in the deep recesses of their minds?
We saw this form of warfare last Sunday: a gunman opened fire and killed 26 innocent worshipers and wounded 20 others at a church in an otherwise peaceful Baptist Church in a suburb of San Antonio, TX. Just six days earlier in New York City, unsuspecting bicyclers and pedestrians were mowed down by a truck driven by a lone terrorist as his victims took the sun on a bicycle path in Lower Manhattan. Eight died and multiple others were injured.
The New York attack occurred within a stone’s throw of the site of the World Trade Center, where the deadliest sneak attack in American history took place in 2001. Thousands died when two terrorists hijacked commercial airliners and flew into the Twin Towers, piloted by crazed Jihadi murderers. Their accomplices used two other hijacked planes in an attack on the Pentagon and in a thwarted attempt to fly their plane into the White House, resulting in many, many more victims of senseless violence. Brave civilian soldiers – the passengers aboard that aircraft – took up the fight and forced their fanatical abductors to crash their plane into a field in Pennsylvania. All aboard were killed.
Last month, a shooter in Las Vegas used an automatic weapon to kill 58 concertgoers and wound nearly 500 others. He did this from the comfort of his high-rise hotel room overlooking the venue.
I could go on and on listing the heinous events that have occurred in recent years throughout the U.S. as well as in England, France, Germany, Belgium, and the other battlefields of the existential threats of the new millennium. More importantly, I am at a loss to think of a solution—a way to stop the madness.
All I can do is recollect and request that this weekend we memorialize all those that fought in wars past and present. We call the day Veterans’ Day in honor of those valiant soldiers, sailors, and airmen who risked and lost their lives protecting their homeland. Some call it Remembrance Day, which is perhaps a more apt moniker as we take the time to remember not just all those who fought our wars, but all those who lost their own lives – the innocent civilians who are the victims of conflict.
Veteran’s Day was originally known as Armistice Day to memorialize the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. Wearing a red poppy flower on one’s lapel quickly became a way of publicly acknowledging the horrors of that war and the sacrifices that were made.
Some still wear the poppy flower. Fewer of us can remember the poem that spawned the symbol—a plaintive lament written by John McCrae, a Canadian soldier, in May of 1915 at the height of World War I – a war that was supposed to be the War to end all Wars. It begins:
“In Flanders fields the poppies blow
between the crosses, row on row,
that mark our place; and in the sky
the larks, still bravely singing, fly
scarce heard amid the guns below.”
The Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC] is the largest conservative senior advocacy in the U.S.
“The purpose of this anarchy is elusive.” No, it is NOT. Its purpose is to establish a global caliphate, and our leaders should fight the IDEOLOGY of radical Islamic terrorism before it’s too late.
The young people have been brainwashed by liberal teachers; the progressives are a cancer on our society. We must organize and fight them on every front — with much stricter penalties for violent protest, burning the American flag and treason. For those old enough to recall Ethel and Julius Rosenberg — Communist spies — whom we executed by electrocution — we all need to revisit that history — and start really blasting them.
Please get your facts correct: SEMI-AUTOmatic Rifles, NOT automatic. Keeps you from sounding like an ignorant liberal. BTW – I joined AMAC when I found out about it right after its founding and am proud – keep it that way with correct facts. Thank you for everything you do.
Excellent oint, Paul – I noticed it right away, too. At least at AMAC this err was unintended!!
I, myself, never served, but only because President Nixon announced on Labor Day Weekend in 1968, I believe, that he was cutting back the Draft Lottery to 196 when my number was 203, and everything up to and including 213 were expected to be drafted. My older brother was an Army Intelligence Officer in a Green Beret unit and the war was stopped before my 2 younger brothers had to serve. My mother’s family escaped Communist Russia and a number of her brothers served in WWII and her youngest brother served in the Korean War. My father’s family escaped Nazi Germany and two of his Oder brothers and he, himself, fought in the Battle of the Bulge. I thank God that neither of the parents or their immediate children are around to see what’s happening today in America. They might call themselves Democratic Socialists or Progressives, but the ONLY THING PROGRESSIVE ABOUT THEM IS THAT THEY ARE ALL PROGRESSIVELY COMMUNIST!!! President Trump is our last hope to save this country from destruction. It’s a shame that 60% of elected Republicans are Rino’s and are not working with him, but against him. And the general populace are being led to think that Trump is failing because his own Party is against him! … NOT TRUE! The Progressively Communists have infiltrated the Republican Party from within and are doing everything possible to DERAIL ANYTHING PRESIDENT TRUMP IS TRYING TO ENACT TO MAKE IT SEEM THAT HE LIED TO HIS VOTERS TO GET ELECTED! … If the Electoral College is eliminated you can forget that America was ever a Capitalist country because we will have lost our country to Communism. And yet, every country that has ever embraced Communism has failed!!! How stupid has the general populace, and our young generation in particular, have become. I’ll continue to fight Communism till I die, unfortunately, at 70 years old, who knows how long I have left to do so. Pray hard, and unceasingly, though it feels that God has abandoned America because the leadership and the majority of the general populace have turned away from Him! God Bless and Happy Veterans Day to ALL our Veterans and especially those now serving in our military today!
Thank you for the post. Inspiring.
Rik
I also thank you Rik for your comment. Very well said. God bless.
Sheila
Thanks, Rik, for sharing. Makes quite a history for your family, and shows what newcomers came for. Nowhere was liberty so evident as in America, and may never be again if we do not attend to our own house, leaving everyone elses alone.
Very good post, Rik. However, don’t sell yourself short because you are 70. If you’re in good health, you might have many more years. I am now 86 and healthy. I remember “Armistice Day” very well. I had a brother in the navy, one in the coast guard (still living at 93 yrs. of age) and a sister who was in the SPARS (coast guard). Got my poppy the other day and met a coast guard veteran who is 92 and we had a wonderful conversation. We so need repentance in our Nation and to once again acknowledge G_d; he has not abandoned us so much as we have abandoned Him. Have a good week and keep on keeping on.
Rik, may thanks to your entire family. My father’s family came from Sweden and have served in the military for generations, including my grandchildren at this time. It’s a tradition apparently. Perhaps all should have to serve in some capacity like they do in South Korea – 2 years at the age of 20. Maybe then the younger generation would have a better understanding of country and appreciate their freedoms more. Again, thank you for all your family has done over the years!
Good comment Rik. Look, you have the mind of someone who served. God bless you.
God hasn’t abandoned the United States, in fact He is embracing America. That’s really the only way Donald got elected. From God’s intervention. When you think about it, there’s no way in hell Donald Trump wins this election. No way. Everything was in hrc favor, everthing, and look what happened.
Rik, keep the faith, and keep serving our cause.
