President Joe Biden drives a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon during a clean cars event, Thursday, August 5, 2021.

President Joe Biden is set to “transform” and “remake” the entire auto industry – “first with carrots, now with sticks” – notes the Washington Post, as if dictating the output of a major industry is within the governing purview of the executive branch. The Environmental Protection Agency is proposing draconian emissions limits for vehicles, ensuring that 67% of all new passenger cars and trucks produced within nine years will be electric. This is state coercion. It is undemocratic. We are not governed; we are managed.

In fascist economies, a powerful centralized state – often led by a demagogue who plays on the nationalistic impulses of people – controls both manufacturing and commerce and dictates prices and wages for the “common good.” Any unpatriotic excessive profits are captured by the state. All economic activity must meet state approval. And crony, rent-seeking companies are willing participants. Now, I’m not saying we already live in a fascist economic state. I’m just saying the Democratic Party economic platform sounds like it wishes we were.

The coverage of Biden’s edict has gone exactly as one might expect. “Biden makes huge push for electric vehicles. Is America ready?” asks Politico, for instance. The conceit of so much modern media coverage rests on the assumption that the left’s ideas are part of an inevitable societal evolution toward enlightenment. The only question remaining is when will the slaw-jawed yokels in Indiana and Texas finally catch on.

I’m sorry, EVs are not a technological advancement – or much of an environmental one – over vehicles with internal combustion engines. Most of the comforts EV makers like to brag about have been a regular feature of gas-powered cars for decades. At best, EVs are a lateral technology. And, as far as practicality, cost and comfort go, they’re a regression. If EVs are more efficient and save us money, as administration officials claim, manufacturers would not have to be compelled and bribed into producing them.

The problem for Democrats is that consumers already have perfectly useful and affordable gas-powered cars that, until recently, could be cheaply fueled and driven long distances without stopping for long periods of time. Fossil fuels – also the predominant energy source used to power electric cars – are the most efficient, affordable, portable and useful form of energy. We have a vast supply of it. In recent years, we’ve become the world’s largest oil producer. There are tens of billions of easily accessible barrels of fossil fuels here at home and vast amounts around the world. By the time we run out, if ever, we will have invented far better ways to move vehicles than plugging an EV battery – which is made by emitting twice as many gases into the air as a traditional car engine – into an antiquated windmill.

“I want to let everybody know that this EPA is committed to protecting the health and well-being of every single person on this planet,” the EPA’s Michael Regan explained when announcing the edicts. No one is safer in an EV than a gas-powered vehicle. The authoritarian’s justification for economic control is almost always “safety.” But the entire “safety” claim is tethered to the perpetually disproven theory that our society can’t safely – and relatively cheaply – adapt to slight changes in climate. If the state can regulate “greenhouse gases” as an existential threat, it has the unfettered power to regulate virtually the entire economy. This is why politicians treat every hurricane, tornado and flood as an apocalyptic event. But in almost every quantifiable way, the climate is less dangerous to mankind now than it has ever been. And the more they try to scare us, the less people care.

So let the Chinese communists worry about keeping their population “safe.” Let’s keep this one innovative, open and free.

There problems with electric vehicles. There isn’t enough electricity to charge all of them. Last year, after touting EVs, California turned around and asked people to limit their appliance and air conditioning so that they wouldn’t overwhelm the grid. EV’s use a lot of rare minerals to make and those come from China. EV’s cannot be recycled. A dead battery costs tens of thousands to replace. Most people cannot afford to by an EV even with rebate incentives.

Why not research better fossil fueled cars, hydrogen comes to mind. EV’s battery last only 5 years and then it cost 25,000 dollars to replace it. Brandon doesn’t tell you that. From gas stoves to cars to our bank account they manage our lives. Anyone waiting for more. When is enough, enough.

The environmentalists and liberals have been lying to the American people about the environmental realities of building and running of these electric vehicles!! I am certain that people like Biden, Pelosi, Schumer have already invested in the companies that are set to profit from the predetermined mandated extinction of the oil companies and everything related to them and that’s why liberals are so in favor of electric vehicles not because they are good for the environment! I don’t think our electric grid is capable of this change yet! And there are all of the unintended consequences that have or haven’t been discovered yet!!!

First of all let’s clear up a misconception there is no such thing as fossil fuels. The dinosaurs didn’t all fall into a pit and turn into petroleum. It’s called petroleum and it’s a natural product of the Earth. Now that we have that cleared up we have already crossed the bridge when we allowed the government to mandate that we buy Health Care. They are cleared to mandate what cars we buy. When that kind of worms got open there’s no way we could put the worms back and now it’s coming back to bite us. Everybody knows that climate change is pure BS. But that does not stop the government from spending our money to carry non-existent problem. Is all about control and power

Isn’t it time to ignore mental midget Obiden? The fact he is mandating EV’s is reason enough to oppose his plan by all means. We must elect Trump for the third time and once again take our country back.

Unconstitutional!!!!!
This is just one of many rules, regulations, and mandates that are NOT Congressionally passed as laws thus invalid. In fact there are several government agencies, the EPA included that exceed the limits placed on the federal level of government thus they too are illegal. Taken to a legitimate court, this issue as well as entire green new deal would be ruled invalid.

It will take 25 years or more to make EVs as cost effective and practical as our gas powered cars today. We are still years away from the infrastructure needed to support EVs. The government through draconian regulation and incentives is trying to manipulate the entire auto industry into eventually eliminating gas powered vehicles. I would hope that Trump or any other Republican President would defund the EPA and let the market decide if people want to own a EV or gas powered vehicle. We’re being lied to all of the time about the wonders of EVs. We’re not seeing EVs when they catch fire while recharging or hearing about how much fossil fuel it takes to mine for the minerals to make the batteries, which by the way come from China. I’m also not buying into any false propaganda about Climate Change either. I remember back in the 70’s when the libs were telling us that we were going into another Ice Age. Then when that didn’t happen we were going into another Global Warming Age. Now we have “Climate Change” to cover all weather events. What are the Chinese, Russians, Indians doing about Climate Change? It’s just another fraud to control us.

Listen to energy expert Mark Mills on Youtube (and others). This is no energy transition. There will be no energy transition. The world still burns more wood for power than wind and solar. There is no way to mine the components from the earth to make a transition to green, unless you mean nuclear.

Biden and his dangerously ignorant goons are doing their very best to destroy the auto industry for no good and rational reasons. Feelings and ideology are much more important to the Marxist left than logical and critical thinking. Biden and his demented supporters believe that all they have to do is make proclamations and force policies down the throats of manufacturers and auto drivers way before the technology is advanced enough to make electric vehicles common place. Biden doesn’t even care that the average American can’t afford an EV. Biden doesn’t care that over 90% of the minerals that are mined to make EV’s are controlled by the Communist Chinese. Biden doesn’t care how much he destroys our manufacturing and economy. He only cares about keeping control of the American citizens. His thoughts and policies are shortsighted at best and traitorous at worst.

I will NEVER buy an EV. First of all, I am not going to have to stop and spend from 30 min to an hour charging the stupid thing when I’m on a trip….or any other time. Second…they cost too dang much and third, I’ve seen too many cases where they catch fire while charging. And who wants to be in a rainstorm and have to use charger???? Stupid.

I’ll NEVER purchase an EV. I’ll keep recycling my old internal combustion vehicles. The Democrats are busy pushing a technology which is damaging to the planet they claim to protect and stills required a great amount of fossil fuels to power the electric generation to charge them. Does any one in the current administration have a clue how electricity is produced and transmitted. If they really cared, they would be fast tracking nuclear power plants to provide safe clean electricity. Instead they are doing their best to shut them all down. This is just another method to destroy America by putting China in the drivers seat.

Biden needs to be reminded that he is a President and not a king. And as I’ve been saying for years, the use of Executive Orders needs to be constrained. But alas, what governmental entity in Foggy Bottom will pursue such an effort? The courts have made a few inroads in that regard, but there is much more that needs to be done, and Congress is the only body that can do it, if only they had the guts to do it. Meanwhile, Biden continues to destroy America with his pen.

Dear Mr. Outside Contributor; You missed TWO major points in your article: First, the fossil fuel burning cars need fuel that are made by using large amount of electricity to heat the crude oil to produce some suitable grade fuels, and burnt by the all kinds of vehicles that run all over the earth everywhere and emit CO2 gas individually and constantly. The second is that as you pointed out the EV needs electricity, and a lot of it. But it is made mostly from boiling water to run generator, but also made by other renewable sources of all kinds, and the emission produced at the place of making electricity can be strictly controlled by state-of-the-art tech of today, rather than emitted by the billion of cars at all over the places. As we need good convenient mode of transportation as we are today, and may be forever, we will be wise to chose it with less of the damage that gives to the environment.

Dear David and the world: First let me thank you for your article and thank you to all who wrote about their total disgust for biden and the demonrats. And for those who wrote the “snarly” comments I hope you know what is really happening to all of us in this country before you spout off. And I am so sick of those who make fun of the elderly. I told my husband (who by the way was born in Berlin in 1938) that I will never drive an electric car. I have no problem with anyone who wants free enterprise to work and wants to privately manufacture but like the “woke” stuff going on in our schools PLEASE DO NOT CRAM IT DOWN MY THROAT! I am 82+ years old and have worked in healthcare most of my life until they diagnosed me with Parkinson’s. I had to give up our last stick shift (truck) and yes I learned how to drive on a stick shift. I have had the pleasure of working with so many patients both here and overseas. I also worked in countries where you would not allow any woman in your family to go including the communist run country of the soviet union and the middle east. But that is the way communism runs any country they decide to take down. I have to agree with everyone who wrote in with common sense. I feel that ALL in the current administration are traitors, that biden and his family are all very sick in ways that I can only address as being all about satan and his desire for power. You are so right that we need to PRAY that God will heed our prayers and take this nest of vipers out! My husband and I traveled to east Germany before the Berlin wall fell. We saw a statue of Fredrich Engels and Karl Marx. He said to me if these two could come to our country they would kick up their heels and say “WE WON”. This was when we had gone to east Berlin to visit his one sister who decided to stay when my husband and the rest of his family went to West Germany just before the wall went up. Both his sister and her husband were very high up in the communist party. I remember sitting in their living room and her husband saying to me “We shall bury you in America”. So I just had to let you know what is really happening here beyond socialism. I Thank you for reading this and I hope I offended a lot of you “useful idiots” out there.
Sincerely, Carol

The track to the Hunger Games, keep people isolated, keep people confined to a small area, no roaming at will across this beautiful country (being made uglier and uglier though all the time burning and looting pouring out chemicals and pooing upon) Yes EV is the answer to keep people confined, unable to go long distances. The Postman is already slowing down the delivery of mail, this too will be shut down (they show us what they plan and what they do, those Media Moguls the Bankers, the Bakers (the Pi men) rearranging history and the future)Satan must crawl upon his belly, he must lick the dust, he must ask permission before he can do anything. Electricity has to be generated from somewhere. Reliable, non-intermittent sources like gas, coal, and nuclear. Wind and solar only work when the wind blows and the sun shines. You could not charge an EV car using solar cells at night. The current electrical grid is not built to handle the extra load.If you want.an EV go ahead and buy one. It will not save the planet since more CO2 is created in mining the matueral, transportation, construction, and charging, than it will ever save. Gas powered cars are more CO2 efficient over their lifespan than any EV. If you believe in the Climate Change religion. Ask one of the believers what percentage of CO2 exists in the atmosphere? They don’t have a clue. It is 0.6%

The wealthy globalist elite rule the day and do it by a symbiotic relationship with their buddy politicians in the government to make a fortune. This is the definition of authoritarianism/fascism. So, they issue decrees, executive orders or mandates and get laws passed, to FORCE people to do something that will financially benefit the businesses owned by their buddies, the wealthy ruling elite. Making them wealthier at the expense of the commoners. Kleptocracy! This is what is happening with the solar/electric thru a climate change hoax narrative. They are basically establishing/forcing a solar/electric MONOPOLY! That’s is breaking ANTI-TRUST laws. Where are the lawsuits? How is that freedom, folks? As a free American I want many forms of energy to chose from, not forced into ONE!

EV’s have nothing to do with protecting the environment or the economy. The globalists care only about their one-world agenda. They have everything to do with control of the masses. If everyone had EV’s they would not be able to travel any real distance. It would keep people centrally located where the socialists could more easily control and count them. We are well past the stage of history where our government cares one bit about the people or the environment. It’s all about power and control. Everything the Dems do is Satanically controlled. They are evil.

It is heart-breaking so see how quickly our country is being lead into Communism. We Conservatives and our elected GOP reps watched this whole scenaio unfold. The progressives have been brainwashing our kids in schools for at least 40 years. They have changed many of the history textbooks by not telling the truth about our country and the world. They are responsible for creating young people who wanted to and actually did destroy statues and other rememberances of our great past. Now these progressives/Communists have us all in the palm of their hands since they have totally corrupted DC. They tell the justice system, the irs, the fbi etc, etc. What to do and whom to do it to. I see no way out through an election. They own every facet of our society and they are ALL against we, the people who pay their salaries. We no longer have valid elections here, the Commies have no qualms about cheating on all levels. Who will punish them when they own the only place they can be punished….the government itself. Biden is a dictator and so are his comrades. Communism is alive and well in the U.S,

Excellent article.
Remember when obama and biden were forcing NATURAL GAS Vehicles on everybody saying how much CLEANER, CHEAPER, and BETTER for the environment and had the Post Office and government agencies buy thousands of NATURAL GAS vehicles and companies including Native American Tribes went out bought a bunch of them for their Global Warming lie?
Now a few years later DICTATOR Beijing biden trying to FORCE
Electric vehicles on everybody for the same lie.
But this time it is pure politics so he can pay back all of his DARK MONEY donors at the cost of our ENERGY INDEPENDENCE that we had with PRESIDENT TRUMP.
Still haven’t seen a NATURAL GAS fueling station or mechanic to this day that were supposed to be all over the country.
(TAXES RAISED FOR THIS).
Nor, will you see any for the Electric vehicles.
But you will see Electric Vehicles COST you MORE (INCLUDING RAISING YOUR ELECTRIC BILLS) and far less reliable.
But don’t worry.
You can get a 100 miles before battery is dead (Stuck in traffic or elsewhere) with no charging stations or mechanics around or when the batteries blow up either by themselves or on impact. Even when they catch fire whether you are in them or not.
I will stick to gasoline vehicles for the simple reason of they are by far more reliable in any weather including cost efficiency and I can always find a mechanic no matter where I go.
With Electric Vehicles you just end up stranded with OUTRAGEOUS
COST including possibly your life.

In addition to the fact that it is NONE OF THE GOVERNMENT’S BUSINESS what kind of car I drive, here are some other reasons why I will never buy an electric vehicle: 1. Despite the so-called rebates (which are not enough, and you have to jump through a whole bunch of hoops in order to be eligible for them) EVs are still too expensive. 2. I personally have NO PLACE to plug in an EV in order to charge it. I’m sure I’m not the only who can’t find a place to charge it because the infrastructure IS NOT THERE! 3. As a result of the Biden Administration war on fossil fuels, where is the energy required to charge EVs supposed to come from? So-called renewables (actually unreliables) don’t produce enough energy to charge EVS. Not only that, does anyone remember what happened during the heat wave in California last year? People were told NOT to charge their EVs because the energy grid couldn’t take the extra load resulting from the required amount of energy. Since our energy grid can’t take the additional strain from charging EVs, don’t be surprised if the rest of the country runs into the same problem. If anyone WANTS to buy an EV, that decision should only be made by the consumer.
