The U.S. border with Mexico is at a “breaking point,” Trump administration officials say, with arrests of illegal immigrants surging to record levels.
In February, border agents arrested more than 66,400 people for entering the country illegally, the highest number recorded since 2008.
“This situation is not sustainable,” Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said in a press conference Monday. “The system is well beyond capacity and remains at the breaking point.”
Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen outlined the latest numbers in an appearance Wednesday before the House Homeland Security Committee, now controlled by Democrats.
“This is a crisis — pure and simple — and we need to respond accordingly,” Nielsen said in her prepared statement. “We cannot stand idly by as our border security is further compromised and our immigration laws are exploited.”
The Republican-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee also held a hearing Wednesday to examine border security.
The latest numbers come as President Donald Trump makes his case for his declaration of a national emergency to secure funding to build and add to barriers along the southern border.
McAleenan said the increased flow of illegal immigrants presents “both a border security and a humanitarian crisis.”
Since 2014, the number of families arriving illegally has increased dramatically. This poses a difficult challenge for Border Patrol officials, who have been clear they don’t have the infrastructure to respond to the influx of families—specifically children.
According to statistics released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, 26,973 unaccompanied children have arrived at the border since Oct. 1, when fiscal year 2019 began. This is a 54 percent jump from the same period last year.
The number of family units apprehended increased by 338 percent, with 136,150 families apprehended since Oct. 1, compared to 31,100 over the same period the previous year.
The Democrat-controlled House last month voted to block Trump’s emergency declaration, with 13 Republicans joining them.
The measure now moves to the Republican-controlled Senate, where the president faces an uphill battle.
At least four Republican senators—Rand Paul of Kentucky, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine and Thom Tillis of North Carolina—have vowed to vote with Democrats to block the president’s emergency declaration.
The U.S. border with Mexico stretches for more than 2,000 miles. Securing it, experts say, is only a start to addressing the crisis.
“The huge upsurge in illegal border crossings shows that we really do have a crisis and a national emergency at the border,” Hans von Spakovsky, a senior legal fellow at The Heritage Foundation, told The Daily Signal in an email, adding:
“There is no doubt that illegal aliens are attracted by what they’ve seen and heard about the sanctuary policies being implemented by states and cities to obstruct immigration enforcement; the ability to abuse asylum policies; and the misinterpretation of federal law by the courts that allows families with children free rein to be caught and then released into the interior of the country, where they can disappear and face no consequences for their illegal actions.”

God created this wonderful country and with George Washington, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and many, many people looking for a place to worship our God in peace and freedom. And God answered their PRAYER!!! Now the government and many leaders are trying to throw it ALL away. All those young men (and young women) who fought for, and WON, that freedom have died in vein.
I have always had (and still have) the greatest respect for Senator Rand Paul. That said, I have to disagree with him on this issue. He makes a good point, funds should be allocated by congress and executive actions raise a troubling precedent. But what to do if congress refuses to do its job? This rule must not be inflexible. So while his position is based on thought and logic, unlike his beanbrain stablemates, I think he needs to revisit the issue and apply the “greater good” principle.
That said, we have to realize that the wall is in no way a solution to the immigration issue. It may provide some temporary relief, and it is most important as a tangible symbol of our changing attitude toward immigration, but without revamping our utterly mad immigration laws and policies, nothing much will change. The problem is, of course, so long as we have the radical, extremist left in charge of the house and the media I don’t see any relief coming on that front unless OUR President starts 1. Publicizing in detail the problems with our current laws and 2. offers changes that will make things right.
Until then we are stuck with a highly imperfect wall as out best defense.

A big part of this problem is sanctuary places in our country, which should be illegal. My suggestion is that anyone who gets hurt by any illegal, especially in those areas, should sue them for millions of dollars and let the courts decide if they have a right to protect illegal immigrants who break the laws. I know of some cities on the west coast who vote for it but don’t tell their citizens they did.

I am reading a book now called “America Extinguished” and it’s very enlightening, It was written by Sa Imuel T. Francis. I’ve had it for quite awhile and am just now getting to it. In a very small town of El Cenizo of about 3,000 people, the dominant language was Spanish. It forbid the leaders of the town to talk about the immigration status of all the any resident there. This was on September 3, 1999, so I don’t now if this town still exists.
These kinds of things must be stopped. You and tell by the date above how far I am on my reading. As far as I”m concerned, it these people really want to become citizens, they have to go through the process, learn English and every other thing that is required of everyone to become a citizen.

We protect other countries from invasion, why can’t the military protect our borders with forces if necessary. We need to stop this madness! Stop giving the illegals the means to come into this country now. As a taxpayer, I am tired of supporting the illegals. We should be ensuring that our American retired people have enough to live on, that our military veterans are taken care of medically and financially, and that our homeless are helped. Instead we give the illegals, food stamps, educate their numerous children, provide medical care at no cost, and allow them to use fraudulent paperwork to work in this country without paying taxes. How fair is this to the American citizen?
