What is classical music?

The Oxford dictionary defines it as music written in a Western musical tradition, usually using an established form (for example, a symphony). Classical music is generally considered elegant, and the mood of the period is one of simplicity, balance, and logic, as reflected in Classical musical arrangements. Music experts explain that the art of the time is characterized by grace, the beauty of line, clarity of form, and balance of structure. Instrumental music includes sonata, trio, string quartet, quintet, symphony, and concertos.

When exactly was the classical period?

The classical period of music described music composed from roughly 1750 to 1820. Per yourclassical.org, that includes the work of Haydn and Mozart and most of Beethoven. But it doesn’t include Bach or Wagner, nor Debussy or Copland, despite radio stations throwing in their music.

Is classical music for everyone?

A musicologist is an expert in or student of music as an academic subject. They may or may not be trained in performance or musical composition. The term is often associated with people who are familiar with classical music. However, you don’t need to be a scholar or a trained performer to enjoy classical music. Contemporary musicians such as Billy Joel even dabble in classical music. In his 2001 album, Fantasies & Delusions, Joel’s longtime British-Korean pianist friend, Richard Hyung-ki Joo, performs compositions written by Joel in the classical style. It is believed that the album stemmed from Joel’s disenfranchisement with pop music and the desire to do something significant. He succeeded through classical music, demonstrating that the genre can be enjoyed throughout the ages by everyone.

So, why listen to classical music?

There are many great reasons to listen to classical music. Here are three of our favorites. One, it is said to have a calming effect on people and relaxes the body and brain. Two, it is known to spark creativity. Three, it can lift your spirits and warm your soul. Researchers have found that listening to and playing Classical music can increase one’s production of the antibody immunoglobulin A and natural killer cells – those that attack invading viruses and boost the immune system’s effectiveness. Thus, there are likely some awesome medical benefits, too.

What are some well-known pieces from main classical composers?

Haydn is considered a prolific composer, and his compositions are often described as light, witty, and elegant. His most well-known works include the London Symphonies, The Creation, Trumpet Concerto, and Cello Concerto No. 2 in D Major. Haydn is known for helping to establish the forms and styles of the string quartet and the symphony.

Mozart is among the most recognized great composers in the history of Western music.

His works are well known, including The Marriage of Figaro, Symphony No. 40, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Rondo Alla Turca, etc. Though he wrote some religious music, he also sought to entertain.

Beethoven is also well admired for his works which span from the Classical period to the Romantic era of classical music. The composer faced some physical and mental torment due to the onset of deafness, yet his life experiences are said to have greatly influenced his music. Some of his greatest works include Moonlight Sonata No. 14 Op. 27, Pathetique Sonata, No 8. Op. 30, Eroica Symphony (Third), Op. 55, Fur Elise, and Violin Concerto in D Major.

Can listening to classical music improve your life?

Quite possibly. Classical music is known to stir the body, mind, and soul. One may get a sense of feeling happy, at peace or inspired by listening to classical pieces. And one may gain a newfound appreciation for these gifted classical musicians, for their abilities to entertain, and above all, for their great mastery of music expression despite life’s hardships.
