Girl Goes to Check the Mail and Instead Discovers Deployed Navy Dad had Returned Home Early

These days with sites like Amazon you can order all sorts of things right to your door. But when these kids went outside to pick up a package, they discovered something truly priceless.

In July, Jessica Virgili was at home near Kempsville, Virginia when she asked her youngest daughter, Sophie, to bring in the mail for her. The young girl was resistant, even as her mother promised a package had been delivered to her.

“She was like ‘I don’t want to check the mail,” Jessica told WVEC.

Luckily, Sophie was talked into it, because this was one delivery she wouldn’t want to miss.

She stepped outside and discovered it was really her dad, Brian Virgili, who was away on deployment aboard the United States Navy’s Aircraft Carrier, USS Harry S. Truman. Brian has been serving in the military for 18 years.

When he called to tell Jessica that the ship would be returning earlier than expected, they decided to keep it a secret from the kids.

“They’re younger so they don’t watch the news,” Jessica said. “They don’t have or use social media, so they wouldn’t have seen it.”

While the kids had no idea about the early arrival, Jessica says it was harder to prepare for the surprise without letting on.

“I’m trying to keep the house clean and I can’t tell them why,” Jessica said. “I kept telling them ‘let’s get your room clean.’”

“And my son was begging me to take him to 7-Eleven but the whole time I’m thinking ‘hurry up.’”

But in the end, the surprise was a big success. While Sophie was just happy and excited to see her dad again, the older children had a more emotional reaction. When oldest son Logan and middle child Chloe came outside for the reveal, Chloe broke into tears, and the family joined for a group hug.

“She got everybody crying,” Jessica said.

It was a heartwarming homecoming for Brian, who loves surprise homecomings like this.

“I’m ready for it, you know what I mean. I’m ready for it and they’re not,” Brian said. “They don’t know when I’m coming home … so when I come home early, it’s always a good time.”

And the good times are just beginning. The family did a lot of catching up, sharing stories of camp as their father gave them gifts from overseas and having a family cookout.

“It’s really exciting, because he’s been gone for a very long time,” Chloe said.
