Former AG Barr Argues Left-Wing Brainwashing in Our Schools Is Unconstitutional

Few speeches delivered by an American leader in the modern era have addressed the cultural crisis facing this country with such clarity, vision, and moral courage as former Attorney General Bill Barr’s remarks Friday to Alliance Defending Freedom.

Accepting ADF’s Edwin Meese Award for “Originalism and Religious Liberty,” Barr argued that “the greatest threat to religious liberty in America today” is “the increasingly militant and extreme secular-progressive climate of our state-run educational system.”

He said that this indoctrination in public schools may well have reached the point of being unconstitutional, and laid out a case for a legal challenge to leftist brainwashing based on the First Amendment. The left-wing curriculum being taught in government-run schools, Barr argued, is so aggressively anti-Christian—and indeed anti-religious—that it represents a violation of the constitutional rights of Americans of faith.

Barr began his remarks with a brief history of America’s approach to public schooling, dividing it into three distinct phases. During the first phase—which encompassed most of American history up until the 1970s—the instruction students received in the public school system was “committed to Judeo-Christian values in the general sense.”

During the second phase which “came in the latter part of the 20th century,” Barr notes, the “the left embarked on a relentless campaign of secularization intent on driving every vestige of religion from the public square.” God was driven out of the curriculum based on the idea that public schools should be entirely neutral toward religion.

But now, Barr said, we are witnessing a third phase. Instead of merely purging schools of religion, “[w]e’re now seeing an affirmative indoctrination with a secular belief system and worldview that is a substitute for religion and is antithetical to the beliefs and values of traditional God-centered religion.”

He cited two examples. The first was the transgender ideology that is permeating public schools across the country. Barr referenced a coloring book distributed to schoolchildren in Iowa public schools which told them that “Everyone gets to choose if they are a girl or a boy or both or neither or someone else, and no one else gets to choose for them.” He said this was a perfect example of a curriculum that flatly contradicts religious teachings not just on sex and gender, but on issues such as the role of parents and natural law.

The former Attorney General went on to describe Critical Race Theory and to illustrate how this new fixture of the public school curriculum is fundamentally incompatible with the Christian worldview, just as traditional Marxism has been widely recognized as diametrically opposed to Christianity.

Barr explained that while teaching such anti-religious beliefs and values in public schools is clearly the basis for a legal challenge based on the Free Exercise clause of the First Amendment, he believes the left is also vulnerable to an argument that they are teaching their own kind of religious doctrine—a violation of the Constitution’s prohibition on the establishment of a state religion.

“The tenets of progressive orthodoxy,” Barr argued, “have become a form of religion with all the trappings and hallmarks of a religion. It has its notion of original sin, of salvation. It has its clergy. It has its penance. It has its dogmas, its sensitivity to the whiff of any heresy, and even the burning at the stake, so far only metaphorically.”

Barr then asked the obvious question: “If secular-progressivism indeed occupies the same place as a religion – and by all appearances it does – then how is it constitutional to have state-run schools fervently devoted to teaching little else?”

Barr proceeded to argue that to protect the conscience rights of the American people, the public school system needs to be reformed on the basis of universal school choice. “Public funding of education does not require that instruction must be delivered by means of government-operated schools,” he said. “The alternative is to have public funds travel with each student, allowing the student and the parents to choose the school.”

It was President Trump who remarked last year that school choice is “the civil rights issue of our time.” Barr’s contribution to the education debate is his recognition that school choice is easily the most important religious freedom issue of the day as well. Parents who object to the new religion of the Left being preached in public schools must be given the freedom and the resources to provide for their children’s education in a different setting than what Barr called “the government’s secular-progressive madrassas.”

Barr’s remarks call to mind the famous passage from Justice Jackson’s 1943 opinion in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, “If there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in matters of politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word their faith therein.” Too many public school classrooms in America today are worship centers for the woke Left to do exactly that.

Barr concluded his remarkable speech by challenging every American parent who cares about their kids and the future of this country to muster the moral courage necessary to confront the Left’s new civil religion being preached daily in the nation’s public schools. Barr argued that “confronting this issue, I think, is the most urgent task for people who are concerned about religious liberty.” “Religious liberty,” Barr said, “is not safe in the United States as long as we have the kind of public school system we have, the forced monopoly and the indoctrination of children into these radical secular progressive orthodoxies.”

When I came to the US, I looked into schools to learn more for myself. Then when my children were born, I started to explain many differences I saw in the educational system. The lacks of history, lacks of facts, lacks of intelligence in the teachers. I told my children to open books and learn on their own. I would help if they asked.
I have been appalled at the worthless system woodrow wilson instituted here. And kept so low to keep people in slavery. unbeknownst to them!
It is despicable to have wasted 4 generations of young minds as I have witnessed it. Worse year after year after year. No respite in sight. Just the unions destroying those so important fresh minds!!!

I totally agree with Attorney General Barr. My children were born in 1982 and 1984, and the removal of religion from the classroom was prevalent while they were students. It wasn’t as prevalent then as it is now, and I wasn’t as concerned about it then as I am now.
We’re losing our country!

The one silver lining in the coronavirus plandemic was that many parents decided to homeschool their children during the shutdown and some of them have continued even after schools have begun to open again. This is wonderful! If each parent would decide to pull their children out of school and homeschool them, I think the public schools would rethink what they’re doing since they could not remain open if there no children in the schools. Haha. I know that won’t happen but the more parents that do either homeschool their children or place them in private schools will send a message to our public school system. Also, groups of families can get together and form their own small schools and help each other in schooling their children. I homeschooled all of my children who are now grown and things are a hundred times worse now than they were back then in the 1990s and early 2000s. Schools today are extremely dangerous places for children emotionally, physically, socially, and spiritually. Not to mention the fact that most of them do not teach the children even how to read and write. Many of them are totally useless wastes of time. Parents, you need to also get on the school boards and be involved in making important decisions for the schools that your children attend.

Funny how Barr is getting kudos for discussing how our schools are teaching unconstitutional drivel, when he could have prevented it from happening back in November of 2020, He could have done an actual investigation into the obvious abuses of our voter laws and the voter fraud which took place. He bowed out, insisting the election results were valid while screwing the then president, Trump, who backed totally the kind of education he now praises.

I think Barr needs to shut the hell up. He lost all credibility when he refused to take care of the election mess in November. He showed up exactly who his master was and it was not the American people. He refused to make Durham release his report on time, as promised, and he refused, repeatedly, to uphold the laws of this nation by bringing charges against the Biden Crime Family, Obama and Hilary Clinton.

He didn’t stop the bull crap with the COVID demands that ended our Civil Liberties and just stood by while Pelosi and others enriched themselves with insider trading and ANTIFA and Black Lives Matter burned cities, business and murdered.

I am sick of these clowns stabbing us in the back, running us over, and making damn good and sure our Constitutional Rights are thoroughly obliterated all in the name of making themselves famous and signing book deals for ruining people’s lives and self congratulating themselves for helping to burn down our country and get us ready for China and Russia’s inevitable invations.

Dianne I am sorry you feel this way and you sound so angry you are not looking at the bigger picture they are destroying everything that is sacred in our children and that is a BIGGER problem that to many parents have overlooked for to long because they have let this crooked system raise their children for them. They have taken our most precious children and drilled all of their filth,lies,and hatred into the most vulnerable minds they can and it is time to stop it! The children of today are being taught that anything that God calls bad is good. The Bible never changes there are 2 sexes we do not get the right to choose. We as a nation will be damned if we do not do what is right in Gods eyes. Barr is just stating what most of us already know! Indoctrination of our children has been happening for DECADES unabated. Now with the illegitimate POSUS in office, leftists’ plans have been given a green light and they’re barreling thru the intersection at top speed.
Barr was a YUUGE disappointment as US Atty General. He allowed the DOJ & FBI to get away with the attempted overthrow of a duly-elected President (among a host of other things).

I am glad a government official is FINALLY acknowledging the teaching of Socialist principles in our schools. The Iowa example is pertinent since it not only goes against all religions’ teachings, in goes against SCIENTIFIC FACTS! There are only two genetics- male and female. Science and DNA tell us that. The public school system is TOXIC. Give school tax money directly to parents and let parents decide where to send their kids. I went to Catholic schools but even they have become “woke.” I’m afraid there’s no safe place to educate the kids now other than home schooling.

Of course indoctrinating our children with Communist ideas, critical race theory lies and to hate of our country is unconstitutional!! While I am encouraged to see parents beginning to fight against this, getting it banned from our schools will take a long, hard fight. The ruling mob in DC is doing everything it can to turn us into another Communist China as quickly as it can. And, we can never undo the brain-washing that has been taking place in our schools for 3 decades!! We need to get federal government out of our schools now!!

Our colleges are becoming Cults. It is about time that someone has enough brains to see what is going on. Parents have to pay more attention to where their children are attending school especially if they are paying for their education. We as parents need to take more responsibility, not only regarding college but also in the Elementary schools.

I find it interesting that when the GOP was in a position to do anything, they did nothing. But now, they’re all pounding their chest and telling us how bad it is under Democrat rule. Doesn’t anyone see through this? If they don’t fix the problem with voter fraud, nothing else will matter. But they won’t even acknowledge it’s a problem. Sickening.

I went to parochial school from 1960 to 1972. We homeschooled our two children from birth through high school. All that time, my parents and my wife and I paid the public schools in our area roughly 80% of our personal property and real estate taxes. Unfair. Plain and simple. It would have been so nice to receive a voucher back from the government to spend our money on the education product of our choice. I agree with President Trump. This a huge Civil Right issue of our time.

Suggest read the book “The Naked Communist” printed in 1958. The goals of that party at that time are what has been happening in United States for years, but seems to have escalated faster in the last 20-years. Read the book if you want to keep the freedoms we had in year 2000. I just hope it is not to late to turn things around.

I must say along with several of the writers ahead of me that I cannot help but wonder where you were when you were in a position to do something about these things? Nonetheless, if you are truly willing to help the American public, then lead the charge and help us to bring a lawsuit against the Federal Government/Biden Administration for breach of oath to defend the Constitution, to protect the American public which is their primary function, and to serve the people of these United States and not the people of other countries. Surely there is a way that we can turn this bus around before it runs off the cliff. Don’t just make pretty speeches – lead us to the proper actions.
