DECORATING 101 – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO SUCCEED

Intimidated by decorating?  Don’t be.  Anyone who can put together a basic outfit is totally capable!  Simply apply the principles of dressing to decorating.  Start out with basics, layer, and accessorize.

The Key Factor

If you’re fearful of decorating, or easily tire of colors, resist the temptation to go bold.  That way you’re less likely to have regrets.  The key is to keep the walls and flooring neutral.  Later, introduce colors, patterns, and textures to your space to add WOW factor.  Think of it as dressing tastefully to avoid looking gaudy.

Go Subtle With Your Background

Consider the walls and flooring as a solid shirt and pants or as a little black dress.  Start neutral, and build upon it. Boost living spaces with a neat and sophisticated look.  For the walls, choose subtle shades of white, gray or beige.  Floors and wall colors should not compete for attention.  In general, they should balance each other out.  Warm wood floors are complemented by shades of tan or beige.  Gray tile floor go well with white or coordinating shades of gray.  Creating a neutral and classic base provides the potential to add pops of color down the road.

Adding Furniture

Adding furniture to your space can be tricky.  What’s the right amount of furniture to have in the room?  What kind of sofa or table should I buy?  There is no single answer to these questions.  Many variables come into play, such as personal taste, function, square footage of the room, and how many people you wish to accommodate in your space.  Measure the room and the furniture carefully.  Consider windows and doorways when measuring.  Just like clothing, you’ll want a good fit.

Choosing the Layout

Furniture placement is paramount.  In the living room, a comfortable couch, some side seating, and a coffee and pair of end tables serve well to furnish the room.  Think about size, durability and structure when purchasing furniture.  Those things are similarly important when shopping for clothes.  In a living room, the couch should face your room’s focal point.  A fireplace, picture window, or television are some of the most common features. The entrance to the room should be open and inviting.  Take care not to block entryways, windows, or light sources with furniture.

Creating Functional Spaces

When people buy outfits, they often look for staple pieces which can be worn for a plethora of occasions.  Home spaces need to be similarly functional.  A table and chairs are a must for an eat-in kitchen.  A hutch or kitchen island can be added if there’s adequate space. Drop-leaf tables are great space savers for small kitchens.  Think multi-purpose.  Extra chairs may serve a purpose in another room and be added to the table to accommodate guests.   Do you look for sales on clothes?  Do the same for furniture!  Save money and think practically.  Avoid overfilling rooms to prevent a cluttered look.  A useful and well-functioning space is a valuable one.

Dressing it up

Keep your big pieces of furniture neutral and add color through your accessories, just like adding a patterned scarf or vibrant jacket to a basic outfit.  Pizzazz can be created by choosing fun curtains, rugs, lamps, throw pillows, blankets, candles, decorations, etc.  When choosing home accessories, pick a color you like, then build upon it using coordinating patterns, complimentary colors, and interesting textures.  Keep knick-knacks minimal.  A few well displayed pieces generally have more appeal than an overload of trinkets.  Think of it like putting on jewelry.  A single strand of pearls stands out most beautifully.
