Understanding Your Medicare Options

Medicare can be confusing, but it doesn't have to be. Here's a quick overview of the key parts and how they work together to protect your health and your wallet.

Part A — Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care. Most people pay no monthly premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.

Part B — Medical Insurance

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical equipment. You pay a monthly premium (income-based) and typically 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for services.

Part C — Medicare Advantage

An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurers. Most plans bundle Parts A, B, and D and may include extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and fitness programs.

Medigap — Supplement Plans

Sold by private insurers, Medigap fills the "gaps" in Original Medicare — covering copays, coinsurance, and deductibles so you have more predictable out-of-pocket costs.

Why Review Your Plan Annually?

Medicare plans change every year — premiums, drug coverage, and provider networks can all shift. An annual review ensures you're not overpaying or missing better coverage options.

Medicare Costs & Savings

Between premiums, deductibles, copays, and coinsurance, Medicare costs add up quickly. A licensed advisor can compare plans side-by-side to find coverage that fits your health needs and budget — potentially saving you hundreds or even thousands each year.

Medicare Questions, Answered

Get clear answers to the most common Medicare questions.

What is Medicare?

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people aged 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities or specific medical conditions. It helps cover hospital stays, doctor visits, prescription drugs, and other medical services.

When can I enroll in Medicare?

Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is a 7-month window that starts 3 months before the month you turn 65 and ends 3 months after. If you miss it, you can enroll during the General Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31 each year) or during a Special Enrollment Period if you qualify due to a life event such as losing employer coverage.

What's the difference between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage?

Original Medicare (Parts A & B) is offered directly by the federal government and covers hospital and medical services. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an all-in-one alternative offered by private insurers that typically bundles Parts A, B, and often Part D, and may include extras like dental, vision, and hearing coverage.

How much does Medicare cost?

Most people pay no premium for Part A if they or a spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years. The standard Part B premium for 2026 is set annually by CMS and is income-based. You may also have costs for Part D, Medigap, or Advantage plan premiums, plus deductibles, copays, and coinsurance that vary by plan.

Do I need a Medigap (Supplement) plan?

Medigap plans help cover out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare doesn't pay, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. If you want more predictable healthcare costs and the freedom to see any doctor who accepts Medicare, a Medigap plan can be a smart addition. Note: Medigap cannot be paired with Medicare Advantage.

Can I change my Medicare plan after I enroll?

Yes. During the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7), you can switch between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, change Advantage plans, or join, drop, or switch Part D plans. Changes take effect January 1 of the following year.

Why should I use AMAC's Medicare advisory service?

AMAC's licensed Medicare agents work for you, not the insurance companies. Our free, no-obligation consultations help you compare plans side-by-side, find potential savings, and choose coverage that fits your health needs and budget — all at zero cost to you.
