Bloomberg News’s Refusal To Scrutinize Michael Bloomberg’s Candidacy Raises ‘Serious’ Concerns, Former FEC Commissioner Says

bloomberg VA AG schemeBloomberg News’s refusal to investigate its billionaire owner, Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg, could violate campaign finance laws, a former member of the Federal Election Commission (FEC) told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Bloomberg News won’t investigate Michael Bloomberg or any of his Democratic primary opponents but will continue to investigate Trump, editor-in-chief John Micklethwait announced Sunday following his boss’s official campaign launch.

The policy “raises concerns under federal campaign finance law,” said former FEC Commissioner Hans von Spakovsky, citing regulations that exempt news outlets owned by political candidates, such as Bloomberg News, from campaign finance rules as long as those outlets give “reasonably equal coverage to all opposing candidates.”

“The problem with what Bloomberg [News] has announced is that they are not going to be giving equal coverage to all opposing candidates,” Spakovsky told the DCNF. “They’re only going to be covering one opposing candidate, and that’s Donald Trump… if they’re not willing to do any negative stories that might come up about Mike, whereas they are about Trump, then they’re directly helping his campaign.”

“I think if a complaint were to be filed with the FEC, where I served for two years, there would be serious questions raised whether this policy violates this particular provision of the FEC,” Spakovsky said.

Former FEC Chairman Bradley Smith told the DCNF that the key factor to determining whether Bloomberg News’s editorial policy puts its press exemption at risk is whether the commission determines that Trump is Michael Bloomberg’s opponent at this stage of the Democratic primary.

“A good argument nonetheless could be made that the press exemption should not apply here, given Bloomberg’s own declaration, ‘I’m running for president to defeat Donald Trump and rebuild America,’” Smith said, citing Michael Bloomberg’s campaign website.

However, Smith said he believes the better argument is that Michael Bloomberg and Trump aren’t officially considered opponents from a campaign finance perspective until they have secured their respective parties’ nominations.

“I don’t believe that the FEC or a court have ever ruled on this type of situation, so I suppose it’s an open question,” Smith said. “Certainly, it reveals the flaws of having a regime in which some very large, influential corporations (those designated ‘press’) have a freedom that other Americans do not.”

The director of federal reform at the nonpartisan watchdog organization Campaign Legal Center, Brendan Fischer, echoed Smith’s opinion on the matter.

“Bloomberg News declining to cover any Democratic presidential hopeful means that they are giving equal coverage to all opposing candidates in the primary, but President Trump will be the Democratic nominee’s opponent in the general,” Fischer told the DCNF.

Fischer said it would be appropriate for the FEC to weigh in on the legality of Bloomberg News’s editorial policy, but the commission is currently unable to take any official actions as it has only three active commissioners on its six-member board, rendering the agency incapable of meeting its four-member quorum.

Michael Bloomberg’s campaign declined to comment. Bloomberg News did not return a request for comment.

A closer look at Bloomberg keeps making me think of high-functioning asperger’s. I have worked in this field and I have had a friend for 20 years that had asperger’s with 3 PhDs. He died because he did not go to a doctor when his cut did not heal. He had cancer.
Smart enough to make money but not able to understand or care about the feelings or thoughts of others. Its those little things with the ones who become adept at covering it up – like when Bloomberg said we should still tax people who make $29,000 a year “because then they won’t buy as many sugary drinks”. Its not just the statement is off the wall. It is also that they don’t realize that their statements are off the wall.

Isn’t it so VERY convenient that only three members of the FEC board of six are able to meet instead of the required four are able to meet if a complaint should be files. GEE, IMAGINE THAT????

He’s the ONLY one that has an ad out w/o knocking trump much at all. You see a picture of him. amen. finally one who tells us what he did, when he did it. Most of my friends actually like the ad. He’s as rich if not richer than Trump. He tried to do health things for the city but everyone bitched. Many other mayors and governors did what he wanted to do and got them passed. He’s been both parties. Folks I know from NYC liked him a lot.
He’s the best suited to run against Trump. I’d like to see both of them in a debate; ONLY them. no teleprompters.

When is the corrupt mainstream media going to realize that the American people are on to them?!

The billionaires want “anyone but Bernie”. The DNC wants the big contributors who can be depended on for “contributions”. Hence, the candidacy of Mr. Bloomberg, and hence, Ms. Clinton is making noise again. The Russians want Mr. Trump, because he owes them money.

And once again, another MSM outlet states clearly that it will not cover the news as it is without any bias in it’s reporting. So is it news or is it Bloomberg’s little helpers reporting nothing that is going to affect their boss. That makes it propaganda and is of no value for getting factual information. Woe betide you if you cannot believe it when they clearly state that it is the case.

Does ANYONE really expect real journalism from Bloomberg News? This is just another prime example of the LAMESTREAM media, in this case acting as the drive-by-media for Bloomberg, i.e., as his ambush support staff (with President Trump as the sole target). What Bloomberg fails to realize is that HE is part of the problem, and NOT part of the solution. In fact, I expect Bloomberg would qualify to become a charter member of the “180º Club” (i.e., whatever position he espouses or embraces, the exact opposite is probably true). If you think President O’Bummer was a bad president, a President Bloomberg would be much worse.

Even if a complaint were filed, the FEC probably would conveniently not find time to get around to dealing with it until long after the election next November is over.

However, Smith said he believes the better argument is that Michael Bloomberg and Trump aren’t officially considered opponents from a campaign finance perspective until they have secured their respective parties’ nominations. But, Democrats believe Joe Biden is a political opponent even though he is not the Democrat’s nomination. Complete BS.

This is a very strong accusation when you call people communists as a group. Most are not for Socialism/communism as far as I know. Name calling or labeling are not good for America.l

Arrogant, ego driven Bloomberg wants to be president, but believes the normal primary
process is a waste of his time so … What to do? Since he’s got so much gold, just buy it!!
We should all be grateful because, his infinite wisdom is going to save us from ourselves.
Bloomberg is a perfect example of why anti Jewish sentiment is growing world wide.

This once again points up the illusory nature of our belief in government “protection” for us everyday Americans. Think about it. Bloomberg News might respond, saying, “Oh, gee, we made a mistake! Now we are indeed going to diligently investigate ALL candidates and report our findings in a fair and unbiased way.” Yeah, right, with the help of the tooth fairy. Who, other than a radical left winger would believe such nonsense? Government bureaucrats, that’s who. But then, I repeat myself.

How long will it take for people as a whole to quit believing the fantasy that governmemt exists to help ALL of us, and instead realize that government exists solely to protect and strengthen and enlarge itself, and of course its owners and controllers, jackals like Soros, Steyer, Buffet et al and, yes, Bloomberg?

Wake up, America!
