Walking is gentler on the body than many other forms of exercise, making it an ideal sport for most seniors. There are many apps out there that promote exercise, in particular walking, for better health. Find out more.

Walking is one of the best low-impact physical activities for seniors. This regular form of exercise has proven health benefits, including helping to strengthen bones and prevent osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Studies also show that walking regularly may also lower risks associated with heart disease, strokes, diabetes, some cancers, and more. Walking just 20 to 30 minutes per day is beneficial for mental health, too, as endorphins released can boost moods. For those who seek encouragement, walking apps are useful tools that can help people stay on task without the horrendous price of gym membership. Here are three examples of exercise apps folks are raving about:

1) MyFitnessPal – This useful app is ideal for people who are on a journey for better health. The app encourages people to stay on task by exercising and eating right. It is excellent for seniors as they may track walking steps and set daily movement goals. As a bonus, MyFitnessPal also features valuable nutrition and calorie-tracking information to encourage users to be accountable for their health. (This app offers a free tier of service.)

2) MapMyWalk –This goal-oriented exercise app is a wonderful GPS walking and workout tracker. It is a valuable tool for those who seek to log and track their distance, pace, calorie burn, elevation, and more. MapMyWalk is super for seniors who enjoy personal challenges, want to store and save exercise information, and discover new exercise routes. (This app is free to download and offers premium membership at some cost.)

3) SilverSneakersGO – This exercise app is ideal for older adults of all fitness levels and helps people get and stay fit. Folks can tailor the app to their exercise needs, find classes, and gain access to national and community classes as well as virtual and in-person programs. (Free app with some limited access to certain features.)

Exercise apps are designed to promote health. Most walking related apps are simple to use and are easier on the wallet than paying for in-person gym classes. With gym membership fees skyrocketing, and concerns remaining over members sharing equipment in tight spaces, walking offers a safer and more reasonable exercise alternative. Say goodbye to using complicated at-home or in-gym equipment pieces that are challenging to operate or may cause bodily harm when used incorrectly. Whether you enjoy walking solo or with a partner or group, or indoors or out, these apps go a long way to help.
