What you need to know about upcoming holiday travel & wise tips to keep you safe in your vehicle

Record travel predicted

News stations are warning travelers of high-volume movement expected for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Per AAA, close to 80 million people will be traveling for the 2024 holiday, broken down as the following:

  • 79.9 million will be hitting the road
  • 5.8 million will travel by air
  • 2 million plus will go by bus, train, or cruise

More people are gathering

Now that the COVID-19 pandemic is no longer as threatening as in prior years, people feel more comfortable gathering together. Gas prices have also come down from last year, making travel more appealing. Since roadways, airports, and train and bus stations will be bustling, travelers are advised to be patient and use their smarts.

Here are some top safety tips to incorporate into your travel routine, especially for those who are driving:

  • Pack in advance using a checklist for optimal organization.
  • Bring along healthy snacks, water, a blanket, hand sanitizer, and an emergency kit containing items such as a first-aid kit, car charger, flashlight with batteries, jumper cables, ice scraper and more. • Pack age-appropriate games or toys for children to occupy them during a long drive.
  • Secure baggage in the vehicle to maximize safety and comfort of passengers.
  • Know your driving route and program it into your navigation system ahead of your trip.
  • Share your route information with a trusted friend. Consider safety check-ins from time to time.
  • Fully charge your cellphone before you leave home.
  • Check the weather for your route and destination. If inclement weather is expected, such as dangerous snowy or icy conditions, consider postponing your trip.
  • Fill your gas tank before you go. Also, check tire pressure and wiper fluid.
  • Allow yourself plenty of time to get to your destination.
  • Drivers and all passengers should wear seat belts. Additionally, children and pets should be secure in appropriate safety seats.
  • Keep your eyes on the road. While driving, avoid distractions such as texting. If you must text, find a safe location to pull over.
  • Do not drive while fatigued, stressed or over-emotional. Drivers perform best when alert and clearheaded.
  • Take frequent breaks when driving to stretch your legs and use the restroom and eat.
  • Change drivers as needed.
  • Watch your gas tank.
  • Observe speed limits and practice safe passing methods.

Arrive safe, not sorry

These are just a few wise tips to consider when traveling over the holiday season. Remember that there will be a lot of people driving who are striving to get to their destination, too, so be patient and practice safe driving techniques so you can all arrive safely.

Happy Thanksgiving!
