AMAC Exclusive – By Andrew Abbott

Following the Biden administration’s disastrous evacuation from Afghanistan in August 2021, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken stated in a national address that “a new chapter of America’s engagement with Afghanistan has begun…The military mission is over. A new diplomatic mission has begun.” But as recent events in the country have made clear, that “diplomatic mission” can only be characterized as a complete and total failure – particularly for Afghan women, whom Biden specifically promised to protect.
While the U.S. occupation of Afghanistan was costly in both blood and treasure, it did result in dramatic advances in rights for women and girls in the country. For the first time, thanks to the American presence there, women were able to attend school, graduate with advanced degrees, hold political office, pursue careers, and live their lives in relative freedom.
Prior to U.S. military intervention in the country, public stoning, amputations, and executions of women were common. As it became clear that the Taliban would re-assert control over the country following the U.S. exit, a top concern was that this oppressive regime would return.
At the time of the U.S. exit, Biden promised that the U.S. would “continue to speak out for basic rights of the Afghan people, especially women and girls…I’ve been clear that human rights will be the center of our foreign policy.” In November 2021, all 24 female senators also sent a letter to Biden urging him to live up to that pledge. “You have committed to press the Taliban to uphold the rights of women and girls, and you have stated that America will maintain an enduring partnership with the people of Afghanistan resisting Taliban rule,” the letter states.
But sure enough, the Taliban soon began brutally rolling back the progress seen since 2001. In December, Taliban leadership announced that women could not attend school after age 12, could not work for most aid groups, and must be covered from head to toe while in public, along with other severe restrictions. Other accounts have emerged of women being exiled from their workplaces, forced into marriages, and confined to their homes. Rapes are common.
Yet despite clear promises to take action in the face of such reprehensible conduct, the administration has only responded with vague threats of “consequences” for the regime, even as they continue to ship billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars to the country. Meanwhile, congressional Democrats have gone conspicuously silent on the matter, apparently also abandoning Afghan women and girls to their plight.
Following the announcement of more repressive policies in December, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said the administration was “discussing options,” but no concrete plan to address the treatment of Afghan women by the Taliban has yet emerged. Since the U.S. exit in 2021, the Biden administration has sent more than $1 billion to the country in aid – leverage that the White House could use to force changes in the country’s policies toward women.
Other Western countries are also continuing to send aid money to Afghanistan – accounting for up to 40% of the country’s GDP. Thus far, international bodies like the UN have also only offered “strong condemnation” of the Taliban’s actions, but no actual efforts to try and force policy changes.
The Taliban have threatened that any reduction in foreign aid would result in even worse conditions for women and children in the country. But sources within Afghanistan have reported that most of the aid money gets scooped up by the Taliban anyway, and have advised the West to use any means necessary to force the Taliban to change course.
The administration has received some pushback in the press, with Politico reporting, “Biden aides struggle to respond to Taliban’s latest curbs on women,” while The Washington Post ran the headline, “As Taliban erases women’s rights, Biden encounters limits of U.S. sway.” But such reports have been few and far between, and have largely failed to break through as national narratives.
Meanwhile, Democrats in Congress have failed to follow up on their promises to hold Biden accountable should Afghan women and girls experience the sort of oppression they are now clearly experiencing. California Democrat Dianne Feinstein, who co-led the Senate letter with Iowa Republican Joni Ernst, has been silent. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who previously expressed “deep concern” for Afghan women, has been similarly absent from the conversation.
House Republicans, meanwhile, have promised investigations into both the chaotic U.S. exit from Afghanistan and the administration’s diplomatic failures in the region thereafter. While such investigations are likely to be of little comfort to women and girls now suffering under the Taliban’s brutal rule, they may be the first step toward forcing some policy changes that might actually put pressure on the regime to respect basic human rights, as Biden promised more than one year ago. Once again, it seems, it will be up to the GOP to do their best to clean up the mess created by Biden and his hapless foreign policy team.

Let someone else save Afganistan. Its not our job. The US and Russia both failed to conquer
Afganistan. It cannot be done. We gave the Afgans thousands of our soldiers and 10 times that number were severely injured. Also, we all know we spend quadra billions there for 20 years.
The world assumes if the US wreaks war in a country, the US will rebuild it. So I guess wewill spend more quadra billions over the next 10 years to rebuilt that sand pile.
Afgan men showed that they would not fight for freedom. So should we ? Let the Taliban have it.
I know they will run things as they wish which the US could not.do. Question is: what did we
learn ?
To Ron citizenship.
I have to give the credit to Thomas Sewell, I read that and when I posted it the credit was cut off. Still very true.
To Edward, Thanks for the information regarding Thomas Sowell , on education and reasoning. It is a very important matter. Sowell has plenty of good ideas , only heard some favorable things about his work, his writing, never read anything he wrote until you passed on this as being the source of your comment. So, I appreciate it. Advancing and increasing knowledge through making comments on these articles and AMAC polls is a great opportunity to help make some genuine contributions to making improvements where needed, and strengthening everything to do with freedom of speech, freedom in general. The value of Reasoning would make for an important article , since it is at the foundation of so many things, so many endeavors .
Would someone please explain to me WHY we continue to GIVE money to countries that HATE us and want to DESTROY us. I think since the taliban says they’ll do more harm to women, take away our money and let them. They’ll only destroy themselves in destroying women. As for these women in Congress who expressed outrage, they’ve moved on. They’re now going to carry the torch and removed gas stoves etc. Guess Nancy and Barbara will rub sticks together to cook and keep warm. Oh wait they don’t cook and they hire others to rub the sticks. Rain is falling in California. Wonder what GOD will do next to reach these people who want to destroy the UNION and the Middle class.
A man that abuses his own daughter has no respect for women. He uses women to trick the public to get what he wants
He’s a typical narcissist that only cares about himself.
To Andrew Abbott, Very important article, the primary concern is to find ways help the women in Afghanistan, and I am thinking that those Afghan people who were fortunate to get out of Afghanistan , who have family still there, they should probably be the best people help, they would know best what can be done. There are some private organizations involved, some government agencies involved . One report I read on the topic was about a pilot who was able to get out of Afghanistan but his wife and children are still there. It is the kind of situation that gets me to thinking that something needs to be tried to help, it is not something that can be disregarded as too complex , even though it is a very complex situation. It would not be in keeping with the teachings of Christ to forget about those who were betrayed and it is not in the tradition of American values to turn away from a situation like this in Afghanistan.
It seems reasonable that all ideas that will provide help for women in Afghanistan should be one of the priority issues for Congress,
And the United States of America needs to fix the damage done by the betrayal, it is not acceptable to have the word betrayal associated with the United States of America
Money never ends up where it’s supposed to but in some official’s pocket
To Anna Hubert , Thanks for the comment, apparently you are correct about financial aid not reaching those it is intended for. In the first sentence I wrote what I was trying to communicate was that the people who would be best qualified to help this situation would be those Afghan people who made it out but have family or friends still there.
( the word ” to ” somehow was left out – it should be ” they should probably be the best people to help” , referring to those who have family or friends still there. ) What I believe is probably a good, positive thing people here in the United States could do would be help with refugee resettlement matters. Again, helping in a direct way is something probably best done by the Afghan people . The safety, the freedom of the Afghan women is the priority matter, and the matter of fixing the damage done by the betrayal of trust is of great importance too. The reputation of the United States of America should not have betrayal attached to it.
How about all the US Citizens that are being betrayed
I agree about U. S. citizens being betrayed, I see it as a matter of both needing to be fixed. In fact what needs to be done here in the United States should be given priority, then attention to other places and people . It has a way of connecting . What I was trying to communicate in the comment was how the majority of the work needed to help with Afghanistan situation should be done by people from Afghanistan. I believe in the value of having ideas at the ready , same as being prepared for emergency situations.
.
Reply to John,
One of the painful signs of years of dumbed-down education is how many people are unable to make a coherent argument. They can vent their emotions, question other people’s motives, make bold assertions, and repeat slogans— anything except reason.
Very good comment Edward, the importance of reasoning , has so much to do with the situation. You accurately described the cause of the behavior. When the inability to reason is at the source of the problem it helps to realize, to understand that and understanding is often the key to dealing with adverse situations , it usually leads to needed improvements and possible solutions.
Same shameful betrayal of American women. He even hangs his VP out to dry on a daily basis…what do you expect?
Trump was the anti woman president you idiot. When will Trump concede the 2020 election he lost bigly? It’s already 2023.
Hey John, Mike, GOP Establisment, anti trump, or whatever you’re calling yourself, sign off your parent’s computer and go play on your TikTok machine
As usual follow the money and it would come out why nothing is happening.
Gloria is making post after post filled with lies.
Biden would be better off – and so would the rest of the world – if he would just stop promising things he will never do. He will be impeached, or be removed soon from the office he was never elected for.
Are you drunk, stupid?
Great question. Biden’s not going to be impeached or removed from office; we’ll be lucky if he doesn’t get reelected. The inmates are running the asylum.
Sounds like you drank the koolaid
Not surprised since DICTATOR Beijing biden likes to sniff little girls hair here in the USA.
Remember all the News reports showing him doing that.
Dictator Trump prefers raping women.
Prove it or get off the democrat bandwagon. If there was only one person in the world the dems could convict of a crime and imprison it would be Trump. It’s all political. Either put him in prison (if you have facts) or shut up.
How can I block or mute people like John? Life is way to short to be forced to deal with his BS.
Jeri sucks
Thanks for the compliment. You just made my day. Please tell me WHY listening to someone like you enhances my life?
It’s probably john kerry
Multiple women have come forward you idiot. Trump is a rapist.
Is this the same dog and pony show that you and your gestapo tried to pull on that poor guy and his family a few years ago when he got appointed by Trump. We are onto your sick little destructive agenda
Again, follow the money, these women are looking for the notoriety and being paid, why do you think they are crawling out of the woodwork after so many years? They lack credibility in my opinion.
Go back to your hole you sick little dumbocrat
Any promises made by Joe Biden are worthless words on a page. Sending Afghanistan a billion dollars along with contributions from other nations validates the Taliban and perpetuates the misery. In this case and in many others, biden says the words but doesn’t back them up with action.
I pity every one of those women subjected to this brutal regime once again. The country has been thrown back to the Stone Age and we could have prevented it. What the he<< did anyone think the Taliban would do when we pulled out as abruptly as we did?
How is it the responsibility of Biden or anybody in the United States? America first means taking care of Americans first and we have a hell of a long way to go.
We could not have prevented it with any reasonable sum of money. It is not our problem.
No, it’s not our problem any more…not since biden turned his back on people we had made a commitment to and not since he left the enemy (the Taliban) $85 billion in weapons when he vacated the country. Do you think any of our allies are fully confident that the U.S. under biden will come to their aid if they need it? Biden’s actions weakened our standing in the world and put us and our allies at greater risk from tyrants in Russia, China, and Iran. The reason why Ukraine and Crimea were invaded with biden and Obama in office and not when Trump was president should be obvious.
Yes, of course, the president’s first responsibility is to American citizens. But where we’ve made promises, we should honor them. Or at least conduct a measured withdrawal, getting all Americans, contractors, and interpreters safely out and maintaining a base to make sure our efforts weren’t in vain.
Based on what biden has done so far to ruin this country in his short 2 years in office, he’s not doing a whole lot to “take care” of us either.
Enough is enough. Bush should never have gone there. Omaha should never have allow us to stay. Trump should never have allowed us to stay. Biden withdrew but did it horribly. I don’t give any of them a passing grade. All this wasted money overseas while the price of food and electricity is skyrocketing in the United States.
Are we forgetting Barisma, the gas company in Ukraine, that hunter biden just happened to have a spot on the board? You people better wake up! All these secret documents that “biden has all over the place and his lawyers are finding”. That right there should be a question in and of itself. Who in this crazy world that they have us living in has lawyers moving their office and doing whatever in their garage and beach house? What is going on here? Am I the only one who has an inquiry mind here? There has been a rat in the wood pile for a long time. It’s time we get rid of it.
Completely agree. Nothing Joe Biden promises is of any consequence, as he or his staff will either back-track or simply forget about it as soon as the TV cameras are turned off. Any money sent to the Taliban will only used to strengthen their hold over the country. In fundamental Islam, neither women nor children have any rights or freedoms. They are property. No different from the goats they tend to or the meager homes they live in. If they speak up or act out, they will either be beaten or killed under Islamic law. The women and children of Afghanistan have now been consigned to live in the 7th century. They now have no future.
All of this could of course have been prevented, but that would have required a real POTUS in the White House. Not the mental deficient we have today. When the scheduling for a speech to coincide with the anniversary of 9/11 is deemed more important than the orderly and intelligent withdrawl of American troops, ensuring American civilians are NOT abandoned in country like they were, and the people of the country are essentially given the middle finger, there are bound to be a lot of casulties. We realistically can’t do anything for the people of Afghanistan now.
It could have been prevented with what, hundreds of billions in taxpayer money? How about somebody do something for the United States. Keep that money at home and let others deal with Afghanistan. We have wasted so much money there.
Trump had a plan of removal – but it was based on victory for all. Biden never has a victorious plan for anything – unless we call Communist China taking control of U.S a victory!
Gloria sucks
Does that or do you add anything valuable to the conversation?
Why john, because you can’t shut her up? It’s pathetic people like you who got us where we are today
What a sad state of affairs for many millions of people, especially since the country had finally become almost modern. Women had jobs, went to college, married if they chose to…and now? I am so glad to be here.
I originally expected Biden would be as incompetent and ineffectual as Jimmy Carter or Obama when it came to massive foreign policy errors on a grand scale. However, Biden has surpassed anything I could have dreamed of in terms of destabilizing so many parts of the world so quickly and then just pretending everything he’s done has been wonderful. Our allies don’t trust or respect us. Our enemies don’t fear us. We have less influence on world events all around the globe than anytime over the last 60 years. We are being marginalized all around the world, while we willfully ignore all the growing threats to this country from multiple adversaries. In saner times, a leader like Biden would have been removed from power long before things had been allowed to deteriorate to this state. If you’re familiar with old Chinese sayings and their meanings, we truly do live in interesting times and that is NOT a good thing.
It’s a curse, isn’t it? Well, it is appropriate. Biden has cursed this beautiful country to 2 more years of unbearable sadness for more than half the citizens. Damm him.
How about Trump buys his own island and makes it a country and all you MAGA fools go there. Trump would be king and absolute dictator and the MAGA fools can become servants to Trump.
You’re still here?
Oh look. Two whole sentences strung together. Wow, how impressive for you. Now all you have to work on is being able to generate some articulate and coherent comments actually worth reading. That may prove a bit more dificult for a moron like yourself to master, but if you sign up for some remedial education, you’ll get there in a few years. Think of it as something to shoot for in terms of personal improvement. Bye-bye.
PaulE, the way he writes, I’ll bet he’s a “tweener” playing on his parent’s computer.
Just an idiot looking to rile things up on the forum. Probably wants to see how many negatives he can get with each of his silly replies.
Got to be part of the regime
John You can go live in Biden’s garage.with his corvette and Hunter.
I’m in
How about we take our country back, put the elected president in office and ship you and the rest of your party to China or Afghanistan, Iran or Ukraine
Yes it is. Biden is the single most effective weapon that President Xi and the CCP could have unleashed upon the United States and the world to aid China in its ascension to lone world superpower status. In another 2 years of Biden, I can’t even imagine what will be left of the United States either domestically or from a foreign influence perspective.
PaulE sucks. Trump was the incompetent one. Republicans always said the current democratic occupant of the White House is the worst in history. It’s like clockwork.
In what ways is biden competent?
You always hit the nail on the head PaulE
The newly elected congress needs to put a stop to all the money and military supplies being sent to foreign countries, including Ukraine. Why are they bringing Ukrainian troops here to teach them how to use patriot missile? Something doesn’t sit right with this. People better wake up. Are they bringing them here to secure biden regime’s agenda against the American People
