As Biden Meets Putin, Lessons From Trump Bold Diplomacy With North Korea

AMAC Exclusive by Aaron Kliegman

Biden

Three years ago this week, then-President Trump met with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un in Singapore for the first-ever meeting between leaders of the U.S. and North Korea. It’s fitting that the anniversary of the Singapore Summit comes as President Biden is set to meet with another sinister dictator, Vladimir Putin, in Geneva on Wednesday.

The contrast between how Trump and Biden approached the lead-up to these summits is stark—and these different approaches tell us much about Biden’s chances for success next week.

Ten months before the Singapore Summit, Trump famously threatened to unleash “fire and fury” on North Korea if it endangered the United States. His comment came hours after news reports revealed American intelligence agencies concluded North Korea had successfully miniaturized a nuclear warhead to fit on its missiles.

The following month, Trump stood before the United Nations and gave a stark warning.

“The United States has great strength and patience,” he said, “but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea.”

Meanwhile, in the months leading up to the summit, the Trump administration imposed harsh economic sanctions on North Korea while deploying a missile-defense system to South Korea. At the same time, however, the administration was in direct contact with the North Koreans, pursuing possible diplomatic talks.

This was a strategy of engagement — but one supported by credible military deterrence and severe economic sanctions. It was clearly this unrelenting pressure, combined with the offer of engagement, that led the North Korean dictator to finally change his behavior.

Trump went out of his way to communicate to the North Koreans that they needed the talks far more than he did. In fact, he suddenly canceled the summit less than three weeks before the planned date because of what he called the North Korean leader’s “tremendous anger and open hostility.”

Trump’s gambit worked: North Korea immediately came groveling back to the Trump administration, expressing its “willingness to sit down face-to-face with the U.S. and resolve issues anytime and in any format.”

Having solidified his upper hand, Trump then reversed the cancellation, announced the summit was back on, and history was made in Singapore.

The story of how Biden has laid the groundwork for his summit with Putin is the exact opposite. Rather than coming from a position of strength and deterring the Russian leader, Biden enters the summit, having made a series of extraordinary concessions that have evidently only emboldened Putin.

In early April, the Biden administration canceled plans to send U.S. Navy destroyers to the Black Sea, which is crucial to Russian strategy. The reason for canceling the naval deployment is obvious: Biden fears an escalation with Putin that gets out of control.

Indeed, a few weeks later, Biden said he’s “not going to seek escalation” with Russia. That comment came after Biden actually imposed new, limited sanctions on the Kremlin but made clear “now is the time to de-escalate” and “the way forward is through thoughtful dialogue and diplomatic process.”

The message to Putin was clear: Escalate, and Biden will back down. Not exactly “fire and fury.”

Earlier this year, massive anti-government protests erupted in Russia after Putin attempted to poison his chief opponent, Alexei Navalny, and then imprisoned him in Russia. But Biden never supported the protesters or called on Putin to step down from power — despite previously calling the Russian leader a “killer” and boasting how he once told Putin to his face that he had no soul.

Perhaps most importantly, Biden last month chose to waive sanctions on the company behind Nord Stream 2, a Russian gas pipeline to Europe that bypasses Ukraine. Completing the pipeline is one of Russia’s most important foreign policy objectives, as it will not only put a lot of money in the Kremlin’s pockets but also give Moscow significant leverage over Europe — especially U.S. allies like Germany.

Of course, Biden made his decision after shutting down the Keystone XL pipeline, which would create thousands of American jobs and simultaneously improve America’s energy security.

Presumably, Biden approved the Russian pipeline because he was desperate for a summit with Putin for months to burnish his foreign policy record after months of missteps and setbacks.

All indications are that the administration was hellbent on a meeting, no matter what. The day after Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko ordered the hijacking of a flight and the kidnapping of a journalist, Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, met with his Russian counterpart and spoke of “normalizing relations” with Russia.

Meanwhile, Russia continues to wage war in Ukraine while aiding and abetting cyberattacks against American companies and government agencies.

In short, Putin is clearly not deterred; he is emboldened, and he is publicly humiliating Joe Biden. This is the context overshadowing the coming summit in Geneva.

The difference in approaches between Trump and Biden in preparing for their summits is striking — and revealing.

When Trump met Kim, they failed to reach a formal deal, but both men reached what was effectively an informal détente — a détente that was only possible because Kim feared what Trump might do.

When Biden meets Putin, there will be no such fear, or deterrence, or pressure. If anything, Putin seems poised to have the upper hand. The reason why is simple: Desperation and concessions are not the cornerstones of a sound strategy going into a summit.

Biden doesn’t have to threaten fire and fury, but diplomacy without the threat of military force and economic pressure isn’t diplomacy at all. It’s called appeasement.

The final & KEY word in this well written article is ” appeasement ” because in the end that is all Beijing Biden has done with respect to Russia. Putin won this hand before the ” weakling ” ever got on his plane…More of the same with Kamal Toes in Guatemala the moment the planes doors opened up…( 2 ) FRAUDULENT gangsters that think they stole an election…
I can’t think of a more fitting birthday present for Donald J. Trump tomorrow, i.e. for our duty bound & Constitutionally driven military to make their move…All of the election fraud evidence is in their possession. They have all the switched votes done by China that spans across each & every state in this nation…
They have all the domestic & foreign interference data in this election, i.e. we DO NOT need the audits to prove election fraud. China thinks they have defeated America without firing a single bullet!
It is time to reinstate our lawfully elected President of The United States of America, Donald J. Trump… It is time to bury the Deep State, once & for all…It is time to take it all back…
If this fails to happen very soon, we will have a Civil War on our hands & blood will be shed, amen…
Bill on the Hill… :~)

Mate, people on this site are absolutely whacked hahahahahaaa, what a load of BS Jude. You people are utterly insane, full of tradition, archaic perspectives like religion and a pathological fear of communism.

What are you actually on about Jude? You’re a paranoid, deluded chauvinist. Relaxing gun laws? Emboldening the police and the army?Evolution? God isn’t real? Heaven and hell, come on, seriously?! You’re becoming a minority Jude. Folks like you are so scared of it you consume ‘replacement’, ‘birther’ and ‘crt’ conspiracy theories like candy. Candy that’s manufactured to manipulate and exploit the fears of people like you so well, that it put Trump in the White House…

He’s a tacky, vapid conman who voted Democrat his whole life and said when asked if he’d ever go in to politics, ‘no, but I think I’d make a pretty good Republican nominee.’

Trump is completely amoral. He knew how to manipulate you. Throw you red meat. Encourage you’re distrust to metastasise into qanon.

And now look at the content of your news providers, Fox et al. Pumped full of Tucker Carlson, conspiracy theorists and antivaxers. Loading up to open fire BS ‘journalism’ on you because it’s what you crave. It would be hilarious if it wasn’t f’in real.

“Full of tradition”? Do you not celebrate anything? Birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Fourth of July around the barbie?

“Religion”? As a conservative atheist who studies evolution, I beg you to open your eyes to the inclusiveness offered by big-tent Republicans. Even people like me and you, if you’re a citizen of the U.S., are protected by rights spelled out in the Constitution and its amendments.

“Pathological fear of communism”? Would you prefer living under totalitarian rule? Why?! Haven’t you seen what is done to people who dispute the party line?

“Emboldening the police and the army?” Again, open your eyes. Where are crime rates today compared to the recent past? Cities burned, businesses were vandalized, looters got away with murder while mayors and governors said, “Let them get it out of their system.” The safety of the public and the sovereignty of this county are threatened when law enforcement and the military services are told to stand down. That’s just stupid.

“Antivaxers”? I’d say it’s a choice that each citizen can make for herself. Based on Fauci’s numerous equivocations, and not knowing what the real death toll is, would you prefer everyone lining up like little sheep? For the record, I did choose to get the vaccination, but I think the sane approach is to protect the vulnerable.

As for President Trump, perhaps one of the greatest presidents of all time because he believes in giving the power back to the people, try looking beyond the list of far-left talking points. Or maybe you’re satisfied with giving most of your money to a radical government that thinks the greatest threat to the free world is “global warming”. Oh, please.

Where are you from, “mate”? Why are you here?

…that should have been “sovereignty of this country”.

This meeting will be similar to one that took place in Europe prior to outbreak of hostilities that led into WW II. British PM Chamberlin negotiated with Chancellor Hitler to preserve Czechoslovakia nationality, came home with a piece of paper declaring that Czechoslovakia would have its freedom and there would peace in Europe. Right…..What happened on 1 Sept 1939? Putin and rest of Russia cannot be trusted and President Biden, well, he will think he has come away with a victory. I won’t hold my breath.

Ever see a demented person try to negotiate? Hell, they can barely remember how to play checkers lets alone high level chess with instant contingencies as the crap flies in the heat of negotiations. I don’t know if Biden can still play pick up sticks with his butt cheeks since Obama’s arm is in the way.

When is our military going to stand up and perform the coup that this country needs to get those 2 idiots, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris out of office? He and Kamala Harris and their socialist/communist/Democrat colleagues are destroying our country and we are sitting back and letting it happen and so is our military who is supposed to protect our constitution and the people of our great country! Where are you military? I am so ashamed of who and what is leading our country currently! Hey military, didn’t our previous great President, Mr. Trump, support you people and make things better for you in this great country? So now, it is your turn to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

Sorry to break this to you, but the senior military leadership of our armed forces is more concerned with promoting diversity training, transgender procedures for new recruits, being politically correct and promoting critical race theory, than defending the United States from enemies both foreign and domestic. Yes, the troops undoubtedly loved President Trump, but as you had to have noticed during his term, the actual senior leadership of the armed forces was more aligned with the mindset of the administrative state that is pro Democrat.

Have you seen the new ads the military branches are airing? Have you read or seen any of the news stories that outline how pervasive the progressive agenda is being pushed within our military ranks by senior command more interested in being “woke”, than addressing any of the myriad of threats this country faces? So I seriously doubt the Joint Chiefs of Staff are going to order the troops to defend the country from Biden and the Democrats running the show.

The Democrats started purging officer level command under Bill Clinton. Remember all those generals and admirals who were asked to resign un Bill? Then when Obama got into office, he picked up the pace big time by removing officers not fully on board with the progressive agenda and promoting more politically correct people to take their place. We probably have a handful of generals and admirals that know how to actually plan and fight a real war left. The rest appear to be political yes men and woman more concerned with ensuring the latest leftist propaganda from the DNC is being taught to our troops, than preparing for any real military engagement. So again, sorry to burst your bubble. Good thought though.

A military coup d’etat! It is hard for this to happen in the military. First look at the make up the population. We are conservatives and liberals, rich and poor, successful and unsuccessful, various religious affiliations….A MELTING POT. There is not one person or organization that is able to reign supreme. The military would all have to be on the same page for something to happen. There is probably a better chance for a breakup of the nation such as states pulling out of the Republic and forming their own countries which rest of the world would love to see happen. Catch 22.

That is how we got West Virginia but in reality this is OUR country and not our employees country whether in or out of the military who are also our hired help but their supposed superiors love being more democrat communist than the soldiers.

I think it is time to remove and never again allow the Democrat Party into our Congress. Remember Congress is the place for our hired help who now think they are the government and ain’t. Removing the DNC and never allowing them back in our Congress would clear up a lot of our problems as we take back the reigns of these like Pelosi, Kamala (the nothing slut), and those in the Senate. They are our employees and as their EMPLOYERS we can change it all back to what our Founders did – that is they are merely SERVANTS or now hired help and nothing more. I would also suggest having our tax money and social security money (whatever is less since we have allowing our hired help to practically drain all of our SS with promise of paying back but never has because they like living the high life on us) in a department and out of the hands of these supposed Legislature and that also means we must remove many wrong to illegal laws they have made. If we don’t take back our Congress, WH, and every thing else then we deserve to suffer and be controlled with outright communism (or if you wish to call it by another name) which is what we are seeing and experiencing now. So wake up and let’s take back our country as we are actually in ANOTHER WAY WITH THOSE WE HIRED WORKING AGAINST US! That 2d Revolution is here NOW so get prepared to do what has to be done. In short, we are at war and we better win or there will no longer be an America of freedom and rights.

Karole, the administration seems to think if it can only sit around the campfire with the Russian Tsar and sing happy songs all our problems will vanish.
That’s a sure prescription for getting kicked in the a**.

The good news is that the president didn’t fall asleep on his feet while addressing our allies, although it often hard to tell.
The bad news. Tsar Putin is gleefully rubbing his hands together anticipating his face to face with Mr Biden.
My fear? The president of the United States shaking hands with the former KGB thug, stumbling, falling into a coma, and giving away the entire store.
I don’t plan to watch it.
