Did you know that once you are enrolled in Medicare Part B, you are entitled to one “Welcome to Medicare” visit? That’s right! You may use this benefit once within your first 12 months of enrolling in Part B. And if your provider accepts Original Medicare, there will be no charge. During this visit, your provider will do a full review of your health history and create a roadmap for your future health needs.

Here are 7 important areas your provider will cover during your Welcome to Medicare visit:

  1. Review of your medical history: You and your doctor will discuss any current (or past) illnesses, surgeries, family history, and medications.
  2. Physical exam: A full work up will be done to check your vision, hearing, blood pressure, and BMI. Additional tests may be ordered depending on the results (which may or may not have a copay).
  3. Determine your risk for depression: Studies show that 1 in 4 seniors suffer from anxiety or depression, and that risk is higher if you have chronic health conditions. Your doctor will perform a depression screening which is included at no additional charge.
  4. Assess your level of safety: This discussion will include ways to stay safe like using smoke detectors, safely operating vehicles and fall prevention.
  5. Talk to you about creating an Advanced Directive: Giving a trusted family member or friend the ability to carry out your wishes, should you be incapacitated, will alleviate a lot of stress down the road. You will be provided with information to take home if you are interested in creating an Advanced Directive or Power of Attorney.
  6. Recommendations: Your doctor will make recommendations to help improve your quality of life, such as diet, exercise, and nutrition.
  7. Referrals: Your provider may refer you to specialists if necessary and schedule a follow up to perform additional tests.

The Welcome to Medicare Visit is a great way to get all your ducks in a row now that you are on Medicare.
