Since taking office again, President Donald Trump has unleashed deadly military force on cartel operations, toppled drug kingpins, and secured the border from drug trafficking and human smuggling. But his most significant legacy on this front may well be his recent creation of the “Shield of the Americas.”

Launched earlier this year, the Shield of the Americas is a sweeping hemispheric security initiative designed to unite the United States with key partners across Latin America in a coordinated campaign against cartels, illegal migration networks, and hostile foreign influence. The effort formally took shape in early March when senior U.S. officials convened regional defense leaders from 17 nations at U.S. Southern Command, followed by the inaugural Americas Counter-Cartel Conference.

Trump also brought those partners together at the Shield of the Americas Summit in Doral, Florida, where the initiative was officially unveiled as a new cornerstone of American foreign and national security policy.

At its core, the Shield is built around a coalition of nations committed to restoring order and sovereignty across the Western Hemisphere. The initiative emphasizes real-time intelligence-sharing, joint military and law enforcement operations, and the deployment of advanced surveillance and interdiction capabilities to disrupt cartel activity at its source.

It also reflects a broader strategic aim of countering the growing presence of adversarial powers in the region by strengthening alliances rooted in mutual security and economic stability. By aligning these nations under a single framework, the Shield seeks to replace the patchwork approach of the past with a unified front capable of confronting transnational threats head-on.

In the weeks since the Florida summit, that vision has already begun moving into execution. Participating countries have started formalizing cooperation agreements and establishing joint task forces focused on cartel disruption and border enforcement. The result is an initiative that goes beyond rhetoric, offering a durable, operational model for hemispheric defense.

If sustained, the Shield of the Americas could stand as one of the defining achievements of Trump’s second term – an effort not just to secure the U.S. border, but to stabilize an entire region increasingly threatened by lawlessness and geopolitical competition.

But that achievement has only been made possible thanks to Trump’s decisive action in the early months of his second term. By projecting U.S. strength and showing that he would not back down to criminals as prior leaders had done, Trump gave other Latin American governments the confidence that U.S. leadership can deliver results.

Trump’s most significant action was undoubtedly removing Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro from power. Maduro had long directly led or enabled drug trafficking networks that funneled fentanyl and other deadly substances into American communities.

Trump’s latest National Security Strategy also signals a clear and deliberate shift in U.S. foreign policy toward prioritizing Latin America and the broader Western Hemisphere. The document elevates the region to a central strategic focus, explicitly arguing that events in Latin America are no longer peripheral but directly tied to U.S. national security.

At the heart of the strategy is what many analysts describe as a modernized “Monroe Doctrine,” often referred to as the “Trump Corollary.” The strategy asserts that the Western Hemisphere must remain free from outside interference – particularly from adversarial powers like China – and frames the region as a sphere where the United States intends to reassert political, economic, and military leadership. It calls for stronger engagement with allied governments to combat cartel violence, narcotics trafficking, and illegal migration, while also limiting foreign control over strategic assets and infrastructure in the region.

U.S. military strikes against drug boats in the Caribbean have provided action to back up those words. Where prior U.S. administrations stopped at mere declarations and promises to stop criminals, Trump unleashed American air power to actually eliminate threats.

Additionally, last year, Trump ordered U.S. Navy vessels to join the fight against the cartels. At least ten F-35 jets were deployed to Puerto Rico, bolstering efforts to dismantle cartel operations.

Professor Giacobbe Gasparo Provenzano, a former advisor on financial policy to Italian Prime Minister Amintore Fanfani, who currently resides in Peru, said Trump’s focus, backed up by concrete military and intelligence assistance, may be “the greatest blessing Latin America could have received in decades.”

“It is an act of political wisdom and moral courage to assist these nations attacked by powerful cartels,” he added.

Whenever narcotics gangs have ramped up their border activity, the U.S. has responded with even greater force. These crackdowns resulted in at least three major drug kingpins being captured and extradited. Joint U.S.-Guatemalan forces arrested Chinese national Wenshen Xu, an ally of the Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación, who was extradited to the U.S. In Ecuador, U.S. help also led to the capture of “Fito,” the country’s most wanted man, and “Topo,” a Los Choneros gangster, who are both being extradited to the U.S. The DOJ has charged them with drug and weapons trafficking, money laundering, terrorism, and kidnapping.

Authorities also stopped a submarine carrying narcotics in international waters along a route commonly used by organized crime to evade controls. The Southern Command described the mission as an example of the commitment of nations aligned in an anti-cartel coalition. Dr. Roberto Da Nóbrega, a former Interpol advisor, explained that cartels deploy these custom-built, low-profile vessels known for their elongated hull and tapered shape, which are engineered to evade detection and transport across the oceans. “Detecting and seizing one of these elusive submarines is truly a remarkable feat,” Dr. Nóbrega emphasized.

Even Chile, often seen as a beacon of safety in the region, has joined the crackdown by building a wall along its northern border. President Antonio Kast has declared a government emergency to fight rising drug trafficking.

The “Shield of the Americas” represents more than just another policy initiative — it is the clearest expression yet of President Trump’s conviction that American strength, when decisively applied, can reshape the security landscape of an entire hemisphere. By pairing force with coordination, and leadership with results, the administration has begun to turn the tide against cartels and restore confidence among U.S. allies.

Have no mercy on cartels, find them and destroy them. And apply the same fervor in finding the fraud and thievery amongst those who are in charge and are supposed to serve the country and the constituents. If our justice can work effectively outside ,in different countries, surely it must be capable to deal with our own criminals and treat them the same impartial way. Blind justice only, not the justice a la democrat.
