If you rely on Marketplace insurance, the deadline to get covered is quickly approaching. Open Enrollment ends on January 15, and if you miss it, you may be left uninsured for the year ahead.

Here’s what you need to know—and how AMAC can help you enroll before time runs out.

What Is Open Enrollment?

Open Enrollment is an annual window that allows people under 65 to sign up for individual or family health coverage through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace. This year, the window runs from November 1 through January 15 in most states across the country.

If you don’t receive insurance through an employer, Medicare, or Medicaid, this is your opportunity to explore Marketplace insurance plans and determine whether you qualify for a subsidy to lower your monthly costs.

But in most cases, you must enroll by January 15 to get covered for 2026! Miss the deadline, and you may have to wait an entire year unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).

How Marketplace Insurance Works

Created under the Affordable Care Act, the Marketplace is a government-run platform where individuals and families can compare health insurance plans. These plans are required to include essential benefits such as doctor visits, prescriptions, hospital stays, and preventive care.

Marketplace insurance is ideal for Americans under 65 who are self-employed, retired early, or otherwise in need of individual or family coverage. But to get the most out of it, understanding subsidies is key.

Do You Qualify for a Subsidy? Know Before You Enroll

Many people are surprised to learn they qualify for financial assistance through the Marketplace. Subsidies, also called premium tax credits, help lower your monthly insurance premiums based on your income and household size.

Here are a few important tips:

  • Income and household size determine eligibility. The lower your income (within federal guidelines), the more financial help you may receive.
  • Be accurate when estimating your income. Underestimating could result in you having to repay all or part of your subsidy at tax time.
  • Update your plan when life changes. Events like marriage, divorce, or moving can affect your coverage and subsidy eligibility.
  • Only the Marketplace offers subsidies. If you buy a plan directly from an insurance company, you won’t be able to apply a subsidy, which could potentially cost you thousands more per year.

Use AMAC’s licensed advisors to help calculate your eligible subsidy and compare plans at no cost.

Why the Deadline Matters

Once Open Enrollment ends, you can’t sign up for Marketplace insurance again until next fall, unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). These are limited to specific life events like job loss, marriage, divorce, or a major move.

Without insurance, you’ll be responsible for the full cost of prescriptions, doctor visits, lab tests, and more. This can be devastating for those managing chronic conditions or needing regular care.

First things first.

STEP ONE: Get a third job.

STEP TWO: Enroll in a medical plan for 2026.

STEP THREE: Don’t get sick because your medical plan has a $6,000 deductible.

we live on SS monthly income. i have subscribed to inhumana, united health theft part d (for dummy). our RX purchases never meet the deductible. consequently, we pay for the RX and $50.00/month for the insurance. now we use GoodRx and pay less. we can’t afford 90 day supply Rxs just 30. but we don’t get the “90 day supply” divided by 3(months). they get your coming and going. i used to be prescribed 12 Rx for afib/heart failure, cholesterol, bi-polar, thyroid and neuropathy meds. i have eliminated all but two and take low-dose aspirin instead of $600.00/mo Eliquis. i actually feel better now, less pain and much less expense. i have never thought this body is meant for eternal life or ruled out the possibility of accidental death. longevity has never been under mans’ control, but is to Jesus Christ. i’m very happy living into my 70’s and know “that” time is running short, but my uncle will be 99 in less than three months even after quintuple bypass 36 years ago and is active and sharp as can been. nothing in life is promised. i’ve got kids and grandkids who need help everyday and and helping them is extremely therapeutic enough. don’t worry! be happy!
