Government Headed for Shutdown as Democrats Refuse to Negotiate

The federal government is set to shut down at midnight on September 30 after Democrat leaders rejected a clean “Continuing Resolution” (CR) funding bill under pressure from progressives.

President Donald Trump held a good-faith meeting with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries at the White House on Monday in a last-ditch effort to hammer out a deal. But both men refused to budge on Democrats’ outrageous demands that Republicans resume welfare payments for illegal aliens and reverse large portions of the GOP tax cut bill passed earlier this year as a price for keeping the government open.

On September 19, the House approved a CR by a vote of 217–212. The measure would extend funding at current levels until November 21, 2025, providing additional time for both parties to negotiate a longer-term agreement.

The bill mirrored the CR passed earlier this year with bipartisan support, including votes from Schumer and nine other Senate Democrats. Republicans also notably voted for CRs no less than 13 times under the Biden administration to avoid a shutdown.

Despite that precedent, Senate Democrats have blocked the legislation. Because of the Senate filibuster rule, CRs must have at least 60 votes to pass.

Democrat demands include a permanent extension of expanded Obamacare subsidies (which were supposed to be a COVID-19 relief measure), the elimination of Medicaid reforms enacted in Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill – such as modest work requirements for able-bodied adults and measures to ensure illegal immigrants are not enrolled – and new limits on the president’s authority to reduce wasteful federal spending.

Republicans argue those demands are unrelated to the immediate task of keeping the government open and instead represent an attempt to force a reversal of policies that voters endorsed in the 2024 elections. Trump said the White House meeting with Schumer and Jeffries was intended to offer Democrats one last chance to accept a short-term extension without conditions, but no agreement was reached.

If the Senate does not pass the House bill before midnight, funding will lapse, and federal operations will begin shutting down at 12:01 AM on Wednesday. That could mean disruptions to a wide range of services, including military pay, veterans’ programs, air traffic control, TSA operations, disaster relief, rental assistance, small business loans, rural health clinics, and food assistance for low-income women and children.

Republican leaders stress that these impacts can be avoided simply by passing the CR already on the table. “A vote against this bill is a vote against supporting our military, against veterans’ care, against disaster relief and critical community programs,” one House GOP aide said. “It is the Democrats’ refusal to move that is driving us toward a shutdown.”

Outside groups have echoed that warning. AMAC Action urged lawmakers to prevent a shutdown by passing the clean CR. AMAC Action Senior Vice President Andy Mangione said in a statement that “a government shutdown would jeopardize critical services that seniors rely on, from Social Security offices and Medicare assistance to veterans’ benefits and health programs. The confusion, backlogs, and service disruptions that accompany a shutdown create needless anxiety and hardship for older Americans living on fixed incomes.”

He added that AMAC members support Trump and congressional Republicans in rejecting the Democrats’ demands, calling them “unpopular and unreasonable requests.”

The stalemate now hinges on Senate Democrats. Without at least seven Democrats breaking ranks, the resolution cannot advance. Republicans note that the measure Democrats are rejecting is nearly identical to the one they themselves approved in March. Since then, Schumer has faced intense pressure from the progressive wing of his party not to compromise again, and the conditions Democrats have attached to their support reflect that pressure.

The White House has said President Trump remains open to negotiating broader policy issues, but only after government funding is secured. Republican lawmakers say agreeing to Democrats’ terms now would effectively nullify the outcome of the last election by forcing the GOP to abandon its legislative wins. Democrats, meanwhile, have shown no willingness to decouple their policy priorities from the funding debate.

With less than 24 hours remaining, the likelihood of a shutdown appears high. Unless Senate Democrats change course and allow a vote on the House bill, large portions of the federal government will close tonight. Republicans insist they have already compromised by accepting current spending levels rather than seeking cuts, while Democrats continue to demand significant policy reversals as their price for keeping the government open.

For now, the path forward remains uncertain – but all the pressure is on Senate Democrats to see reason and reach a deal.

Unpopular, and unreasonable are two great descriptions of our current democrat requests.
Lets hope the Republicans hold fast to the reality of no more illegal funding for those who have not right to tax payer funds. Our budget is for Americans.

I was a federal employee for almost 36 years. If the republicans don’t break down it would be good. Dems believe all they have to do is wait out the Republicans and the Republicans will cave. I’m praying the Republicans find their backbone an stand up to the Dems for once. STOP BLOCKING PRESIDENT TRUM. LET HIM DO WHAT HE WAS ELECTED FOR.

These are the same “turds” who ran this country into the ground for the past terms of Clinton, Obama and Biden and now they are giving grief to the president who is working overtime to get this country back on its feet. What a sham. I really pray that every Democrat Voter in this country is watching what those scabs are doing in the House and Senate and what they have voted for all these years past………no one with a real interest in America except to bring it to its knees so it could be turned into the Communist Socialist Government they were all part of. Now with millions of illegals still in this country and some of them already running for political offices, we will be in some hell of a mess if people do not wake up and start supporting this sitting President and all the work he is doing to keep his campaign promises to Americans.

Dems, always dems. Their trademark has always been slipping in some pork to make them appear magnanimous as to appeal to potential voters and to make republicans appear weak and under their control. Failure to do their jobs is an annual event which should be punish by shuting off salaries of those politicians who fail to serve this nation first.

Government ‘shutdowns’ are a perfect opportunity to identify useless fat and unnecessary spending. When only essential functions of government are operating, nothing bad happens.

Government employees who get furloughed, should STAY furloughed and not collect back pay and not pass go. They should be dismissed.

The progressives with the help of Schumer and his gang are bankrupting this country. If they shut the gov down. They will then push to raise the spending and keep subsidy premium payments for Obama care that nobody can afford without it. Schumer wants 1.3 billion for illegals in this country. You know the ones that are needed by the elite democrats to clean their toilets as one dem from Massachusetts said. You come here illegally you have no right to a job especially benefits. Emigrants that came here legally were not allowed any assistance for 5 years. We went to work and made this country great. We didn’t eat off the land and then left. We assimilated became citizens and worked alongside native born to raise this country up. Not tear it down. There is something to learn from these legal immigrants Senator Schumer. Pass the CR and for once think of the citizens of this country and not the communist globalists in Davos who control you. Think of America first.

The Democrats are much more concerned with changing the global political order, because they think that the US doesn’t deserve to be number one any more. They are so unpatriotic that they are purposely destroying our country, They are so ignorant and full of hate that they don’t even realize that if this country falls — so does the rest of the free world.

As for as the government shutdown, the senator’s and upper level government should be the first to have there benefits cut,not the military, seniors, and low income people. Don’t punish the people that had nothing to do with the way this country is being ran!

Let it shut down, including subtracting pay from house and congress members for duration of shut down. Vital aspects of the government still by law have to be maintained, albeit some with no pay .. which will be difficult, but they might contact their legislators and get them finally to do something. I am really getting tired of this bickering, ‘that could cause the government to shut down ..’ Let it shut down!

I do want to add, MAKE DAMN SURE YOU VOTE NEXT YEAR!!! No more complacency about mid-term elections like Republicans did in 2022. We should of come out of that election with both sides of Congress, if all the Republicans who voted for Trump had gotten off their fat lazy butts and voted in 2022! We shot ourselves in the foot in 2022, don’t do it again next year. If we lose either side of Congress next year it will be because too many Republicans stayed home and didn’t vote next year.

The problem is that they’re so into their self righteousness that they don’t realize how evil their cause is and has been for a long time. Both sides are seriously flawed, but the leftists are now the main problem. It is a spiritual war more than ever. This is how the end times are turning out.

DO NOT giver our money to illegals or people who will not work, who can. I don’t know if I will get my SS check if they shut down or not, but I will get by if it means not going back to where we were before. If our elections fail, like they did in 2020, and if they are able to nullify changes we wanted and voted for by electing Trump, we only have one recourse left to remain free. When elections stop working, it’s time to invoke the 2nd Amendment and revolt. That’s why the founding fathers put it in the Constitution. As much as any of us don’t want that to happen, we are going to run out of choices if we can’t prevail politically over the democraps.

The demoncrats always want the GOP to negotiate and compromise to avoid shutting down the government, but when it comes to them being the ones who have to compromise, well that’s a completely different story. I

If the government does shut down no senator or congressman should receive a paycheck. The military should get their regular pay and Federal employees of the National Parks should continue to get paid from what would have gone to the politicians. Other essential federal employees should also continue to get paid so necessary services aren’t shutdown. And Congress should be required to go to work everyday, without pay, in order to get to a solution. The commissary ate the Capital should be closed and every politician should be responsible for their own meals AND transportation. They should receive none of the usual benefits they get from fleecing the American people.

A government shutdown would allow for the clearing out of many unnecessary DEI employees hired by the leftists in the obiden regime.

DIMMS are again LYING about what’s in the CR! Medicaid is NOT being cut to American CITIZENS. It might be denied to FREELOADERS here illegally! Able-bodied recipients are asked to work [or go to school] 20 hours per week! Guess that limits the time they can attack police and burn down buildings.
If DIMMs don’t agree, Trump should specifically cut things in blue states! Remember Barry and Joe shut down DC monuments even though there weren’t even federal employees working at them!

Sometimes we wonder if these Democrats are agents of the CCP to do this stubborn & unrealistic act they were not voted to do? If they refuse to get this budget approved, because they wanted money & protection for the illegals, then they have just defined themselves as traitors to us all and will kill their party like the Federalist Party & WHIG Party of the past. Don’t they know that?

I don’t think the Republicans should give in. Stick to what was approved in the House and if there is a shutdown, I hope what Pres Trump proposed happens. Fire a bunch of those on the Federal Payroll that are totally dispensable. On another note, I thought that John Thune is the MAJORITY Leader if the Senate and Chuck Schumer is the MINORITY Leader.

The Democrats, and their lapdogs in the media, will blame the shut down on the Republicans. But this time, Americans know the Dems are responsible for this mess. The Democrats, a minority, are trying to legislate by shutting down the Country. If that occurs, priority monetary cuts should be what the Democrats want for their welfare constituents.

The headline should mention that it is only a shutdown of nonessential services. Let the Democrats shut down those services. Then President Trump can fire (not layoff) a large number of nonessential bureaucrats. It will be a good way to drain some more of the swamp and reduce the bloat.

I believe it’s about time we called the democrats exactly what they are – DOMESTIC TERRORISTS !!

They have no interest in the American citizens, to them it’s all about power and $$$$$.

I believe every person who votes to shut down the government be tossed out of their position for failing to do their job and passive aggression against the American citizens.

If we don’t get our SSI tomorrow, I am doomed because that’s all the money I get and I won’t be able to pay my bills. I live from paycheck to paycheck and I am sure there are other seniors just like me.

Nothing, like getting more Conservatives and Republicans voted into the fold. The liberals want to give illegals financial benefits they don’t deserve mind you and they’re getting them NOW!! The rest of us “taxpayer” citizens HAVE to pay for it!!! It leaves such a bad taste in my mouth it’s, “Go President Trump! Go!” In my opinion, as I said, “More demonrats need to be voted out of office as much as possible!!” Too bad there are too many “moron” uneducated and stoopid liberals in this country. Some may have degrees and be “professors” but are still idiots to the “nth” degree. I’m glad I went to a high school, college and medical school where I couldn’t tell what political background the teachers/professors came from!!! They just taught the history/science and didn’t taint it with political opinions.

Fire any government employee that does NOT show up for work, and perform their usual duties. Hire unemployed people willing to work to take over. No union employees can be rehired for any government job. NO more back pay for their vacation time.
Consider pulling their pensions- like Biden did to military, doctors, nurses, police, fire fighters etc that were terminated for NOT getting vaccinated.

What do you think would happen if the stooopid gubmint of. say, France or Germany or the UK let 12 million (or 23 million or 25 million. The number changes daily, it seems) illegal border crossing (illegally, remember) folks into their countries, and THEN decided said illegals were entitled to FREE healthcare and $$$$$ support, courtesy of the ACTUAL denizens of said countries, to THEIR detriment? Care to guess? OH! And THEN the gubmints of those countries being invaded decided to take all their collective toys home and shut down their gubmints. Gee. Sounds kinda familiar…IMHO.
