The Education Trend That Could Save America

Amid declining student outcomes and cratering parent confidence in the public education system as it exists today, a revival of classical education may be just what the country needs to again become the academic envy of the world. Thanks to a new database from the Heritage Foundation unveiled last week, a classical education could be more accessible to families than ever before.

News coverage throughout the first few months of President Donald Trump’s second term has been dominated by reactions to Department of Government Efficiency spending cuts and the administration’s efforts to rebalance global trade. But as impactful as these policies are, the president’s actions to make American education more responsive to the needs of parents and students, such as expanding school choice, targeting far-left ideologies in classrooms, and dismantling the federal Department of Education to return more power to states and localities, could end up having even more far-reaching consequences for American culture – and not a moment too soon.

According to a Gallup poll out earlier this year, Americans are more dissatisfied with public schools than ever before. That survey of 1,005 adults found that 73 percent said they are dissatisfied with “the quality of public education in the nation” – a record low for the poll, which Gallup has conducted since 2001. That figure includes a majority of Republicans and Democrats, with just 16 percent of Republicans and 30 percent of Democrats, respectively, saying they are satisfied with the quality of public education.

It’s easy to see why so many parents are frustrated. According to the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as “the nation’s report card,” 69 percent of fourth graders and 70 percent of eighth graders scored at or below “Basic” in reading – the worst performance ever for that cohort. Things aren’t much better when it comes to math; 25 percent of students did not reach the NAEP “Basic” level, meaning that “they likely cannot identify odd numbers or solve a problem using unit conversions.”

Public schools have also become magnets for political controversy, first through the proliferation of Critical Race Theory in classrooms and later through the spread of radical gender ideology. In Maine, for instance, state officials recently refused to follow Trump’s executive order banning boys from participating in girls’ sports. That spat has now led to the administration pulling $250 million in federal funding for K-12 schools in Maine.

Trump zeroed in on growing dissatisfaction with the public education system during his campaign last year, promising major reforms – including the eventual closure of the federal Department of Education. Trump also pledged to be a champion for homeschool families and outlined ten principles to create “great schools leading to great jobs.”

Public polling suggests that Trump’s expansion of school choice and local control over education are broadly popular. According to a January 2025 survey, “Eight out of ten voters (81 percent) agree that the U.S. should empower parents and prioritize individual students’ needs by providing greater access and more choices to ensure children receive the best education.”

With this cultural momentum behind them, Trump in office following through on his promises, and dozens of states moving to expand school choice, many conservatives believe the country may be at an education inflection point. The Classical Schools Database, which the Heritage Foundation released on April 10, is designed to meet that moment.

The database “features almost 900 schools from across the U.S. that are committed to offering a classical liberal arts education to their students.” Users can search and compare schools and use filters to find the option that is best for their family.

“Classical education is seeing a resurgence today, demonstrating that parents are looking for alternatives to assigned schools,” Jonathan Butcher, a senior research fellow in education policy for Heritage, told The Daily Caller. “We used to just use the word ‘education’ to describe what we now call ‘classical education’ because the skills of rhetoric, writing, and rigorous math have been lost in the traditional system. Given the poor academic results on national comparisons in reading and math among U.S. students, we need the new ‘classical’ education more than ever.”

Students who receive a classical education study the liberal arts, including the disciplines of mathematics, natural sciences, theology, philosophy, and rhetoric. A classical education aims at shaping the whole person, teaching students how to think, not what to think – a motto that has become increasingly popular among conservatives in recent years.

A classical education is also inherently American, as nearly every Founding Father was classically educated.

“The serious pursuit of a classical education shows us that the life of the mind and the existence of education itself depend on the existence of civilization – not to mention political order, security, and freedom of thought,” according to Hillsdale College’s K-12 Education program. “A thoughtful study of history shows us how difficult these goods are to achieve, gives us an appreciation for how rare and precious our own American circumstances are – and shows us how important it is to preserve them.”

By promoting and expanding access to classical education schools, future generations of Americans will have the opportunity to learn the core tenets of republicanism, self-government, and moral virtue. The Heritage Foundation’s database, Trump’s reforms, and growing parental disillusionment with the failures of public schools are all signs that the country could be on the cusp of a great education revolution.

Primary education ( K – 12 ) is so very vital that is should be seen as a national security matter . Our economic livelyhood depends on citizens who can perform their duties . Our nation depends on productive citizens . Our independence depends on productive citizens .

The Communist Demok.RAT.s will fight this to tooth and nail. They are HORRIFIED to have independent, rational voters thinking for themselves.

Anything has to be better than the failing public schools. I’m 67 now and CA schools sucked when I was there in the 1960s and 70s. Its only gotten worse as the Teacher’s Unions convinced taxpayers that more money was the fix. Clearly it was NOT. Parents MUST take responsibility too, learning begins at home. I could already read, thanks to my mother, before I entered kindergarten. If kids have nannies, or daycare workers, or grandparents, or whomever is in charge of your kids while both parents work, that does NOT mean the kids can’t be taught!!! And schools need to start teaching real skills again, wood shop, home economics, basic finance, and COMMON SENSE problem solving. Take the cell phones away and do face to face learning, even if via computer. And I am very wary of schools that will use AI to teach the kids. If so, then why will they get paid salaries as a teacher and not a babysitter. Babysitters do not get benefits packages, retirements, etc. And no babysitter unions either.

It would be interesting for voters to see how much money teacher unions are contributing to Democrat politicians (versus Republican politicians). The unions certainly aren’t spending the union dues on their members.

Once again another great policy and objectives to enhance our students basic reading, writing and arithmetic!!
One of the problems I don’t see addressed is the influx of Latinos that can not do any of the three! They are brought here and placed in ‘age appropriate’ classrooms regardless of their knowledge. In PA, we also have a ‘No Child Left Behind’ which means these students are being pushed through the system without having the ability to perform sufficiently if at all.
This is a lose, lose situation for all involved. Shame on the education system for even allowing this grave mistake.

School choice is the best thing that has happened with education in this country. The Marxists are doing their best to end this program….including Governor Katie Hobbs of AZ! These radical liberals want our kids in federal-run schools so they can continue to brainwash them into hating our Democratic Republic. Pray that we Conservatives can stay in power for at least 12 years so we can get this country back on its original track…freedom from their aggression and hate!!

Went to Brooklyn High School in Ohio…had a teacher who taught us Marxism, Nazism, Socialism, Progressive, Communism. Then presented Capitalism. We read the book 1984. Told the class read current events, you will be faced with Communism in your future. Today’s generation does not have the knowledge given to them about political ideologies. SAD! That is the reason for so many Liberals who do not know or understand what is happening today. Lack of logical education of all subjects is critical. Students have to use calculators instead of solving Math problems on their own. Teachers are as much to blame, for not presenting what is necessary in subject matters. Unions are out of touch for not using the money to truly educate.

Public schools, and Academia in general, have been corrupted by Leftists and DemoKKKRAT controlled “teachers unions”. K-12 education has been “dumbed down” by LIEberals so even the most ignorant among us can “pass” courses with ease. Instead of raising the requirements, they lowered them so “oppressed minorities” could “graduate” while remaining ignorant. Colleges and universities ACTUALLY offer REMEDIAL classes in English and Math to “help” the ignorant “graduate” and offer foolish degrees in useless subjects not geared to actually learning a living. No wonder our work force is filled with useless individuals dependent on government “assistance”.

The whole system to be effective must be overhauled We have college students who barely function on grade 11 level , what future do they have even with forgiven loans,we have workforce that lacks in skills, yet hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent yearly on their “education”. This is a disaster created by Dept. of education that no one even once questioned or examined for decades. We pay for it all, no wonder evil force screams against any reforms

Mr. Trump did the right thing. Now with states taking over was just 1st step. The woke is everywhere and their influence still reigns throughout the land. Mr. trump did what was right saved tax payer from waste. Most states have alot of money and when you see people’s property taxes education is the highest itemized bill. With the woke power you will probably see the red states with a better record of education. Still it was a great choice for our President. What will we see in the future. Can Mr. Trump do this with abortion too? Dealing with these wokes is smalltime wasting alot of money on petty projects. Mr. Trump wants to move on to bigger things and so do I. I am a 60’s generation and I thought in those days abortion problem solved. Now it reaks out again. Sokve and let’s move on to the bigger issues. We all have to realize Mr. Trump is doing his greatest. Dealing with these loosers who took advantage have crerated quite a problem for all of us. When are people going to realize that this is not a democratic party but elites who are possed by demons. The rest of us know who they really are Our members of AMAC you and others. The rest have to move to the right. These wokes forgot what they are suppose to do that is another lose. They should get lost and on the way out don’t let the door hit them in the as….! And you do not have to shut the lights off just leave we’ll take over from here! BYE!

I certainly hope that education is headed towards “classical education “! Just going to a store and seeing how dependent the young clerks on what the cash register says the change should be. Give them a $20 and say I have the 26 cents, if they already hit the total, they have no idea how to give you the extra dollar. You have to do the math for them. And that’s just one example, but it really makes you wonder how they manage to handle their own finances or anything else that requires the use of their education.

Public Education was a huge disaster as it was being instituted. Implementing Policies that were DEI Wokeness and controlling to affect Parents had no rights as to what their children were being taught nor the legal abilty to intervene accordingly. School Boards strove to work in fashion as of Communism, stopping Parents voicing any oposition, making them Enemies of the State, removed from meetings and arrested when necessary. I support President Trump’s overhaul of this entire system. Governance of the People, by the People across all apects of Life in the USA!

Hey folks, if you have three hours Shawn Ryan interviews the mother son team who run Classical Conversations. This is an example of modern ‘home schooling’. For one thing, gone are the days, if they ever existed, of a beleaguered mom working all day to teach her kids by mimicking public school. Therere massive efficiencies gained. Check it out.

The public school system has worked for +200 years & it just needs to be fine tuned and not thrown out the window. Private schools & home schooling can be a choice. I am speaking from experience when I thank our government that provided me a well rounded education. The interaction with other students and teachers, extra activities, and learning discipline is an important part of our lives and we should not ignore this. I would think that most people have a positive outlook at the public education & would not have had the money to attend a private school.

Of course the public is dissatisfied with Public Schools. I read the other month about a gal that complained about not being able to read or write and she was an Honor Student!

The NEAP readings have been in the toilet for many, many years. Long enough to where now our teachers are former under taught students. Our educational system has essentially stage 4 cancer and is supposed to be treated by……well, the ignorant.
Our nation is lost and no, we can’t fix it with money because we are tapped out, broke, deeply in debt and the laughingstock of most of the planet.
Never thought about imitating this part of the Roman Empires experience. It is 1150AD all over again.
