What Happens When Government Bureaucracies Are Reformed?

The answer to the question “What happens when government bureaucracies are reformed?” is what is happening now as the Trump administration is boldly and daringly attempting to keep what was a very popular campaign promise in 2024.

Government bureaucracies in the modern sense have existed globally for about two centuries as developing capitalist democratic nations became industrialized and more urban, transforming much of their rural peasantry into a growing middle class.

To accommodate the social needs of the increasingly affluent population, leaders who held office either by election or royal appointment delegated the rapidly expanding “details” of governance to those who could actually implement the official economic, legal, social, educational, medical, and electoral minutiae of modern public life.

Technically, bureaucracies are answerable to the elected officials they work for and (in an ideal world) thus in turn answerable to the general populations which elect those officials.

But bureaucracies, almost from the beginning, grew large and unaccountable, often self-serving and idiosyncratic, ultimately independently determining policies and practices sometimes in conflict with the principles on which they were created. It was not uncommon as well that corruption became widespread in many bureaucracies.

Nor was the phenomenon of bureaucracies limited to organizations of public life. Corporate, philanthropic, labor union, and even religious organizations all developed their own bureaucratic structures.

Bureaucracies, of course, are necessary to any large contemporary organization, and many of those who work in them perform their jobs effectively and honestly. In the private sector especially, bureaucracies must produce positive results, or they will be replaced or eliminated. It is worth noting that in most cases when a large corporation which is in economic difficulty eliminates significant numbers of jobs, the stock price of the corporation goes up, reflecting the anticipation of investors that the company’s bottom line will improve.

In the U.S. today, as well as many other nations, however, public bureaucracies have grown immensely in size and the salaries they require. There are not only large and costly federal bureaucracies, but state and local ones, too. Each of these over time almost always increase in size, and it should be no surprise that many public jobs are duplicative, unnecessary, or overpaid.

President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was created to make the federal bureaucracy much more transparent, and to eliminate public jobs which are not necessary or effective. These jobs in the past have often been invisible, and the public funds they disburse largely unknown to the general taxpayer.

But unlike the firing of several hundred or even a few thousand corporate or other private sector workers (which is designed to produce immediate economic benefit), the aim of DOGE, under its leader Elon Musk, is to eliminate tens of thousands of well-paid jobs in virtually every part of the executive branch, including the entire Department of Education, a cabinet-level department.

Not only is DOGE attempting to reform government employment, it is also determined to eliminate wasteful and unnecessary public spending administered by the public bureaucracy — not just a few million or even a few billion dollars in spending, but many billions of dollars which serve no justifiable public purpose.

Doing this in a short period of time is obviously a major disruption of the public system and the economic lives of a great many public workers who are stakeholders in the current system. It is unimaginable to think there would not be widespread resistance and protest.

There should be no surprise that, when combined with a policy of placing worldwide U.S. tariffs for the purpose of creating a fair economic playing field for U.S. goods and exports, that international opposition and outcries would immediately occur, and that the stock market, always sensitive to uncertainty, would fall sharply and quickly.

The establishment media, already permanently hostile to President Trump, his administration, and DOGE, is using every opportunity to sow doubt in government reform. A classic case of this occurred when it was revealed that DOGE was looking into the Medicare and Medicaid programs for waste and fraud. The media and some Democrats promptly accused the Trump administration of intending to reduce Medicare and Medicaid benefits. In fact, any DOGE success in rooting out waste and fraud in these programs will make them more secure and even likely to provide more benefits.

If and when DOGE produces the potential huge government and taxpayer savings as it reduces waste, fraud, and federal employment — and if the Trump administration reduces federal taxes and regulations — the result, as it always has been in the past, will be increased economic prosperity, increased business and personal income (and therefore increased government revenues) and a sharply rising stock market.

This will not happen overnight. Its timing furthermore can be constrained by other factors such as natural disasters, foreign wars, inflationary pressures, and the burden of chronically unbalanced budgets.

The economics of the public sector are thus complicated and subject to the world’s timeless uncertainties. But whatever they are, fixing their wasteful and inefficient delivery systems can only reduce the complication and uncertainty.

That is what is happening now.

Everyone who is a critical thinker knows that eliminating government bureaucracy inefficiencies and waste is going to take time and pain. Of course, let us not forget that establishment media who are anti-Trumpers will of course spread their lies and distortions. The demorats, of course, will do everything they can to stop the exposure of waste and corruption. It’s going to be an uphill battle that is worth fighting. Trump has executed what he promised to do. How many elected officials do that?

The Dems and legacy media are going FAR BEYOND sowing doubt. They are flat out LYING to the American people. Seniors now worried about losing benefits (they won’t) are not sleeping well, constantly worried and showing up at the well organized and likely paid protests. I guess the public is NOT as smart as I thought they were after electing DJT. I already didn’t trust most members of Congress, and now I am absolutely disgusted. That behavior started a week before Trump’s speech to congress, they already had their matching paddles printed and the bill that was passed was a simple framework. I read that bill and Medicaid wasn’t mention one single time!! Yes, all I saw on Newsmax was one interview with Speaker Johnson repeating the truth. Republicans MUST stop being so darn nice and get the real truth out there. I am SO HAPPY to see Newsmax viewership up (I missed out on the stock, still kicking myself) but many people still suffer from TDS and are STILL watching CNN and MSNBC. Even Murdoch’s Fox has started railing on Trump, so I no longer watch that network.
If the truth is not told to people about everything the Dems are lying about, this effort will end before it succeeds. The crooked people have ALL JOINED TOGETHER-the anti-corporations crowd, the TDS suffers, the global elite cabal, the lying thru their teeth Dems afraid to lose power, and they are sucking the public with lies. If we do not fix this NOW, 2026 will end Trump’s presidency, or he will be impeached. All we have to do is TELL THE TRUTH!!

Bureaucracies have been around since government. The problem is, once established it was near impossible to desolve one. Often times a bureaucrat was a reflection of those who put them there, either a promise for getting them elected or perhaps personal favor. It would also appear that another reason was to continue on with agendas long after a government officials departure. This hole is deep, is it any wonder why the entrenched is using everything it can to stay in power?

A fair playing field for trade will strengthen the American economy, but weaken the European economies, that are hampered by excessive taxes to support their welfare states, tha also makes it impossible to spend appropriately on defense.

Why do people not understand that cutting wasteful and fraudulent spending will lead to more spending on important priorities? This should be adjusted every few years. And of course, it will entail some belt tightening, just as when a household tries to reduce debt. I praise Musk and Trump and hope they succeed.

You can tell the depth of the corruption by the anger of the reaction. As they say in the military you know you’re over the target if you’re drawing fire. The corruption is absolutely everywhere. You can cancel their corruption but keep your hands off of mine.

The private sector has had significant improvement efforts for cycling around for decades. Many started with quality systems then moved into operations and administration. Some of those are efforts are team audits essentially. Usually the company had defined goals and assurances about the impact on people to help move them or sometimes to help them job search. The improvements were often spectacular.
Public service acts like accountability and improvement is a foreign invasion. As pointed out in this article the FED employees and politicians offer immediate resistance if not sabotage. Though paid from tax monies these workers act like they work for the politicians, who often sponsor increases in pay and benefits hoping for loyal voters. There is no doubt the FED is overgrown and full of waste, fraud, and abuse. DOGE is a necessary process. Despite this upsetting initial round we need DOGE as a permanent department. Inspector General positions have little to show for performance so why not incorporate those positions into DOGE?! Routine periodic audits would yield continuous improvements. Some changes require Congress attention and that has not taken place much either.
Overall the DOGE concept is great and would serve to tamp the growth of excess FED and to streamline important functions. What is not to like?!

Bureaucracies are necessary to support a large country, The problem is that there seems to be no one tracking the money they receive. They keep demanding more and more money with no one taking the time make sure the money is being used properly. If spending was closely monitored, the corruption of misusing the funds occur.

I was prompted to reread the article and to read all the responses prior to thinking how to comment or whether to do so.
Soley as a private sector employee and later as a builder, operator of a design/engineering, manufacturing, and contracting business both domestic and foreign for many years, I decided to comment based on that experience, which includes tariffs, duties, taxes and fees in foreign nations (always paid or negotiated by my clients sometimes with my assistance; there are many methods to minimize or eliminate them).
The debt is the startling, sticking point, as private business operators know, in conjunction with revenue/cash flow, and most important “cost” of goods and services one provides in the marketplace. The efficiency of one’s business/entity is critical; i.e. private and now with Trump/Musk, public. This as I understood was and is the mandate; no surprise.
Private sector employment is generally “at will”. I firmly believe in it and I was let go or had my employer close. This is a motivator to do more and improve. No victims.
With tariffs, I’d state this can be a method of negotiation or modify behavior. History shows The U.S has been “used” by many other economies/nations for quite some time. I’ve for many years thought that tariffs should be proceeded by leaders with discussion and specific parameters, prior to utilization.
Wall Street’s reaction; no surprise. Be patient.

What is happening is President Trump is trying to save America from bankruptcy. Globalization, de-industrialization and being overrun by foreigners who want to do us harm. The democrats on the other hand take a stance against everything, like President Trump is the enemy along with his supporters. Instead of trying to work together to bring jobs back to America, have every nation in the world be responsible for their own prosperity. No the democrats want to globalize America. The result is we are going bankrupt by supporting all these nations by paying tariffs they have imposed on their goods. While they have also produced those goods. America is the one that protects the world from wars among the nations either monetarily or militarily. We are not producing anything, no jobs, wages are stagnant. Just like the elite billionaires like it. They won’t give the tariffs a chance to work. It’s a way to start to change world trade. The WTO is anti American and pro China. Even Pelosi in 1996 said we should impose tariffs when China is admitted to join the WTO which it did in 2001 and the last 24 years Ametica has lost more and more of our industry. When was the last time you bought anything Made in America. In meantime China has become a super power. Has bought ports, land in strategic places. We left Afghanistan and who rules there now, China. They have our 80 billion in military equipment Biden left behind. For computer chips and drugs we have to go to China We pay for our drugs 10 times as much as anywhere else in the world, because China charges tariffs. They don’t allow millions of people to walk into their country. The democrats have divided this country by making racism the cause. Obama divided this country instead of uniting it. The hatred shown by those against an American that is not a democrat, is over the top. Obama was successful in making republicans into enemies and spewing hatred to those that think differently. President Trump is doing what should have been done 30 years ago. He is trying to save America from becoming a third world country and China from becoming a power house. It is almost too late. DOGE will be successful if the courts stay out of it.

The answer to that question is that it is the beginning of the end for ALL of these corrupt, Left-wing progressive socialist Commies and the backstabbing RINOs. Their decades and decades of lies, corruption, and MEGA Waste Fraud and Abuse are FINALLY BEING EXPOSED. AND their Gravy Train is being cut off. This not only terrifies every waking minute for these corrupt criminals, it keeps them up at night.
No wonder these vile lit vipers triple-down on their satanic hatred, their over the top anger, their despicable lies, their embarrassing antics, their violent threats, and their riot-inciting rhetoric.
Seriously, has there ever been a more pathetic swarm of miserable, corrupt, America-LAST, taxpayer-screwing parasites? The answer: NO!!!!!!!

Country of this size needs the workforce to manage the administrative part but without overseeing the management, holding it responsible and accountable for the books it is tempting to mismanage . They were put into positions but not once audited. Who is the true culprit? Who ultimately opens or shuts the money bag? Who is responsible for what is in it?Epstein might be dead his girl friend in prison, but those keeping them in business, demanding the services ,the culprits in crime are free as birds, I don’t think that is justice. You can put someone in prison just for appearances but it is truly not justice done.It will take some doing to clean up this pile, there will be much screaming and kicking with media howling.

my sister just retired from the federal government and her job was also eliminated as doge came thru her department….she is still laughing as she gets full retirement and she admitted to me that her job was so redundant that even when she was hired she knew that she was among several hundred that were doing the same thing exactly so she learned to fake it for over 20 years and she started going to work 3 days a week and never a word was spoken as she had no supervisor assigned to her…..what a farce the government was until doge showed up

Very informative and well-written article. The “Governmental Tycoons” who built this party-serving behemoth on a fraudulent foundation are completely disgusting. A small-to-moderate number of decent people will also be hurt… and, hopefully, will only be temporarily inconvenienced by this setback. The fact of this criminality having continued for so long is deeply troubling… and powerful enough to impart a motivating force on those who no longer wish to see their tax dollars, social security, and other fruits of their labors hijacked for decades without remuneration or investigation. It’s about time.

“To accommodate the social needs of the increasingly affluent population, leaders who held office either by election or royal appointment delegated the rapidly expanding “details” of governance to those who could actually implement the official economic, legal, social, educational, medical, and electoral minutiae of modern public life.” little to none of that existed when i was a kid. things then were still relatively expensive and required budgeting/saving to attain. but when you got it/them you knew going in how much is was going to cost and you either bargained down (a totally/completely lost skill) or saved until you could afford, without credit. then in the mid “60s came mastercard and visa card. the same lending/borrowing principles were applied to car-buying. and in a few more years credited card purchases of cars began. not long after, some people learned all about credit limit increases and locked accounts with demands for payment and non-payer labelling. the point is those bad credit behaviors “never happened” except with those who intended to attain those ends. over the decades our “government” engaged in the same dangerous/reckless/irresponsible spending and the fiat-print-until-you-drop government swamp began is leading role of strangling its people. WE ALL SAW IT. WE ALL SAW IT COMING. WE’RE ALL GUILTY. ONLY ONE GUY CAME ALONG WITH A BETTER PLAN TO TRY TO SAVE THE COUNTRY FROM A DEEP, DEEP SWAMP DETERMINED TO SAVE ONLLY ITSELF.

The first priority of every bureaucracy is self-preservation, the second is expansion to enable more control. No bureaucracy ever asks for a reduction in manpower or budget. To maintain their relevance, they will search for justification to increase the budget and control until they are thought to be indispensable. Examples are the military-industrial complex, teacher unions and the department of homeland security.

I’m retired Navy. There’s a myth that government magically expands on its own. Government gets as large as Congress and presidents allow. Forbes had a good article on February 18 that showed since 1981, the federal workforce shrank by 64,000 under Democrats and grew by 237,000 under Republicans. The Forbes article also said “the federal workforce is almost exactly as it was when Truman took office 80 years ago, going from 3.09 million in April 1945 to 3.02 million last month.”
