Dear Rusty: If I were to apply for my Social Security retirement (I’m 68 on August 1), when could I realistically expect to receive my first check?
Ready to Claim
Dear Ready,
If you’re preparing to claim Social Security retirement benefits, a common question is:
“When will I get my first Social Security payment after applying?”
The Social Security Administration (SSA) recommends that you apply for benefits about 2 to 3 months before you want them to begin. During the application process, you’ll select your desired benefit start date—this is the month you want your benefits to begin. However, Social Security benefits are always paid in the month following the month they are earned.
🗓 Example:
If you choose September as your benefit start month, your first Social Security payment will be made in October. Payments are issued by direct deposit only.
🕒 Social Security Payment Schedule:
Your payment date depends on your birth date:
-
Born 1st–10th → Paid on the 2nd Wednesday of each month
-
Born 11th–20th → Paid on the 3rd Wednesday
-
Born 21st–31st → Paid on the 4th Wednesday
If you were born on the 1st of the month, the SSA considers you to have become eligible one month earlier than your actual birth month.
📈 What About Delayed Retirement Credits (DRCs)?
If you wait past your Full Retirement Age (FRA) to claim Social Security, you’ll earn Delayed Retirement Credits. These increase your benefit by about 0.67% for each month delayed, or up to 8% per year—capping at age 70.
Tip: Credits earned in the current calendar year are applied to your benefit starting in January of the following year.
💰 Can I Get Retroactive Social Security Payments?
Yes. You may request up to 6 months of retroactive benefits. If approved, you’ll receive a lump sum, but your official benefit start date will be backdated—reducing your monthly benefit permanently by up to 4%. This is an important factor to weigh if you’re considering maximizing your monthly payment through delayed filing.
Tip: Credits earned in the current calendar year are applied to your benefit starting in January of the following year.
✅ Key Takeaway
If you’re asking “When will I get my first Social Security check?” — the short answer is:
-
Benefits begin the month you select,
-
But your first payment arrives the following month,
-
Based on your birth date, through direct deposit only.
Claiming Social Security is a major life decision. Understanding how Social Security payment timing works can help you plan effectively and avoid surprises.

Very informative! Thanks much!
I hit my FRA in June 2025. I already set up a Onegov account. It literally took me less than 10 minutes in about May (I had to look up a prior spouse birthdate was reason!), my first deposit arrived in July. Easy peasy. Set up the account, monitor your application, if you don’t get an email online in the account that all is well and what is happening then something is wrong. My Medicare signup was just as easy. Online account is great, easy as could be. I do not understand all the complaining. And I wish the Dems would STOP LYING about cuts to social security. Liars!!!
I applied for SS retirement benefits late in March 2025. I was approved on April 7, 2025 and received my first check the very next day, on April 8, 2025. Was this check for March, or for April? It’s now April 14; will I get another check on April 16? (My birthday is the 13th, so I will be receiving payments on the third Wednesday of each month.) FYI: I hit FRA back in November 2024.
I was approved for my benefits Oct 2, 2024 and still haven’t received a check although their site stat I was approved Oct 2024
I took early SSI at age 62. Does the amount I receive increase when I turn 67?
What if your final paycheck arrives during your first month of benefits
My thought is I’d like a large pepperoni and mushroom pizza right now.
