New York Times op-ed writer and editor Bari Weiss has quit the so-called “paper of record,” alleging in a resignation letter that she was bullied for expressing conservative viewpoints—the very reason she said she was brought on board in the first place.
“I was hired with the goal of bringing in voices that would not otherwise appear in your pages: first-time writers, centrists, conservatives, and others who would not naturally think of The Times as their home,” Weiss wrote in a letter to the newspaper’s publisher Arthur G. Sulzberger.
She said she was hired three years ago amid a bout of soul-searching at the paper after its “failure to anticipate the outcome of the 2016 election” and an apparent conclusion on the part of the publication’s leadership that the New York Times had missed the mark on what drove people in parts of America.
“The priority in Opinion was to help redress that critical shortcoming,” she wrote, calling the opportunity to work towards that goal an honor. Yet in due course, she became increasingly disillusioned, arguing that a “new McCarthyism” had taken hold at the paper, forcing journalists to conform to an ideological “orthodoxy,” with the Twitter mob serving as “its ultimate editor.”
She claimed the paper came to view “truth” not as “a process of collective discovery, but an orthodoxy already known to an enlightened few whose job is to inform everyone else.”
“I was always taught that journalists were charged with writing the first rough draft of history. Now, history itself is one more ephemeral thing molded to fit the needs of a predetermined narrative,” she wrote.
Weiss claimed she was subjected to “constant bullying by colleagues who disagree with my views,” alleging that fellow journalists at the New York Times would call her “a Nazi and a racist.”
“There are terms for all of this: unlawful discrimination, hostile work environment, and constructive discharge,” Weiss wrote, adding, “I’m no legal expert. But I know that this is wrong.”
Further, she said her experience was not unique.
“The truth is that intellectual curiosity—let alone risk-taking—is now a liability at The Times. Why edit something challenging to our readers, or write something bold only to go through the numbing process of making it ideologically kosher, when we can assure ourselves of job security (and clicks) by publishing our 4000th op-ed arguing that Donald Trump is a unique danger to the country and the world? And so self-censorship has become the norm,” she wrote.
Her letter sparked a flurry of reactions on social media.
Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a human rights activist and fellow at the Hoover Institute, wrote in a tweet: “The New York Times was once a great paper. Not anymore. It is now held hostage by a small group of censorship terrorists. Yesterday they hounded out James Bennet and today it is Bari Weiss who must leave. Who is next?”
The Media Research Center, a conservative media watchdog with a focus on reporting liberal media bias, wrote in a tweet: “The @nytimes has proven that their paper does not seek the truth. @bariweiss’ resignation is just the beginning of the downfall of the New York Times.”
The New York Times did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Yet another liberal NYT editor consumed by the socialist mob for the sin of NOT BEING SUFFICIENTLY in lock-step with the latest leftist dogma. Aw, such a surprise…NOT!!! It’s not like this woman was a staunch believer in a fair and honest press. She OK’ed hundreds of the most vile, dishonest and disgusting Op Ed’s in her tenure. One less then sufficiently enthusiastic response or action in conformity to the latest dictates of the mob and you are deemed a traitor to the cause and OUT YOU GO! This is how it played out constantly in Russia, after the communist revolution, in China, Argentina, Bolivia, Zimbabwe, North Korea, Venezuela and all the other socialist / communist Utopias over the last 100 plus years. You exist only to serve the cause unconditionally and the second you don’t display enough enthusiasm or unbridled commitment to everything associated with the latest edicts, you are gone. Positions of any minor authority or power in these Utopias were essentially revolving doors, as there was always someone willing to feed others to the mob for the sake of their own self-promotion up through the ranks. Fortunately for her, we haven’t yet fallen to pure socialism or communism or her fate would have been far worse than simply being forced to quit her job. I’m sure, being the typical NYC leftist liberal that she is, she isn’t smart enough to realize that though.

I didn’t know the NYT had hired a conservative. Not surprising that it didn’t last. It won’t be long after November that the NYT will be placed on top of the trash heap of history.

The NYT has never been “a great paper”. They ignored the holocaust of WWII and have always shown a leftist bias (not to be confused with liberal). They have done a great job of promoting themselves over the years. Crossword puzzles and book reviews don’t make a “news” paper great… unbiased reporting does.
I guess NYTimes as we know it is gone, long been gone. Whereas a paper is supposed to report the news for the reader to come to their own conclusion, it now makes up the conclusion themselves. Have stopped reading the paper long time ago.

To understand WAPO and NY Times, you have to remember they were both in bankruptcy and saved by liberals. Jeff Bezos personally bought WAPO and a consortium headed by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim bought The NY Times. Carlos is not majority owner but he is the largest single shareholder. In essence, The NY Times isn’t even an American newspaper.
Since those ownership changes they have increasingly hired radical editors.

If the journalists and editors don’t conform, as in this case, they become persona non grata and are forced off of the NYT staff. Bari Weiss resigned her position as a writer where she expressed or reported on conservative viewpoints and was bullied because she was doing the job that she was hired to do. How long had she been bullied? If the situation was so bad,why did it take her so long to leave? The Times must be having hard times. It almost would make you believe that she suffered some sort of Stockholm Syndrome. I am not acquainted with anyone who stayed working at a toxic position for very long. The media today is not honest in the attempt to report the news, they are more interested in ratings and in selling “fish wrappers”. In my opinion the reporters take things at face value, “spice it up” for ratings and publish it. Also the media appears to be in the “hip pocket” of the left wing as much of what is reported is clearly slanted towards the left. If one reads the Federalist Papers and then reads what is published today and compares the depth of thought then vs now it is clear than not a lot of thought is given to issues today. It is sad and is a result of the dumbing down of our society.

The New York Times has always been a left wing publication, in the mid 1950’s it supported Fidel Castro with pro Castro propaganda written by Columnist Herbert Matthews so much that President Eisenhower bought into Castro as a “reformer”. How did that work out?

Whatever else this woman did or didn’t do before her departure, her resignation letter in its entirety was an epic, clear, thorough assessment of what’s wrong the the American press and the American political dialogue. It’s about time she caught on, and I think it’s a positive thing that it was so well expressed and – at last- widely read. I am surprised that it wasn’t suppressed by the rest of our so-called free press.
