Vice Presidential Poll: Your Picks, My Thoughts

By Jedediah Bila

Yesterday I ran a twelve-hour poll on my website regarding Romney’s potential picks for vice president, to which 1,179 people responded. I had released the link to cast a vote on Twitter, Facebook, and to my website subscribers. Each voter was only permitted via the system to vote once.

The question and responses were as follows:

Of the following options, who would you most like to see as Romney’s VP?

 Total Votes: 1,179

Marco Rubio  41.39%  (488 votes)

Allen West  34.69%  (409 votes)

Paul Ryan  14.33%  (169 votes)

Susana Martinez  4.07%  (48 votes)

Tim Pawlenty  2.04%  (24 votes)

John Thune  1.78%  (21 votes)

Rob Portman  1.7%  (20 votes)

The results didn’t surprise me. Despite the push by many within the GOP establishment for what they define as “safe” options like Thune and Portman, most voters in this poll rejected those choices in favor of individuals who are bolder in both policy and delivery.

My assessment based on this poll and my daily interactions with regular Americans throughout the spectrum on the right is that most voters don’t fear Rubio’s intellectual charisma, West’s unapologetic honesty on controversial issues, or Ryan’s resolute commitment to entitlement reform. Instead, they shy away from those who characteristically exhibit bland delivery, policy wishy-washiness, and an inability to excite voters with either their records or the public presentation of their ideas.

In other words, most voters aren’t afraid of bold colors. It’s the pale pastels they’re just not that into.

My instinct tells me that by nature, Romney is a play-it-safe kind of guy. I think he is likely leaning heavily in the direction of Pawlenty and Portman.

However, is it possible that Romney recognizes the need right now for courageous policy and even more courageous messengers? Sure it is. And for the country’s sake, I certainly hope so.

  1. nancy genachaw says:

When going to the polls the rallying cry should be If you;re in you;re out……. VP pick Adam west.

  2. Jean says:

General Petraeus or John Bolton would have more balance.

    • Jo-Ann DiPasquale says:

Absolutely not-Patraus or Bolton, not for v .p. The liberal media would have a field day disgracing them both. I have always wanted Marco Rubio-#1, or Paul Ryan-#2. Portman would help us in Ohio, and Christie would blast every bit of Obama’s so-called administration and we love that!!!!!!!!!!!!! But if only Romney could persuade Rubio. He would help so much in getting the hispanic vote, young vote, not to mention Florida which he has to win to become our true President!!!! Marco, please save the United States of America!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Denny says:

The presidency is important but the Senate and Congress are equally important. “Career politicians” should be voted out in favor of Patriots; politicians that are interested in governing this country “for the people” not “in spite of the people.”

  4. Jerry Martin says:

Guess what, yes we have an incompetent president, but what’s been eroding our system as we know it is the ACLU and all the other left wingers that’s infiltrated our colleges, universities and mainstream organizations. They have an agenda to overthrow our free enterprise system and life as we know it and if folks don’t see this, it’s already too late. The ACLU has made a mockery of our judicial system. I blame the mainstream shameful news media for a lot of our country’s demise because they are no longer interested in our country but satisfying the left wing agenda of the likes of George Soros whom finances the core of the left wing.

  5. Borden says:

Again I say forget best VP THINK WIN WIN Romney needs a minority to take votes from that unamerican. Come on think WIN

    • Don says:

I agree, it’s not a case of best candidate, best qualified; I mean look at obama had the least qualifications of all four in 2008.
It’s charisma, it’s popularity. It must be a case of who can beat obama, not who can step in if necessary.

I would have preferred Huckabee. Intelligent, honest and caring with morals…oooops.
Sorry I forgot none of those qualities are found in politicians.

Another commentor said that Ms Bila should not pick Rubio. She only reported what was sent in, neither she nor I said we support Rubio, we said “how to win an election” not who or what is right for America.

  6. L. Yates says:

Interesting poll, but not surprising. The respondents are simplying following the talking-heads banter when they pick Rubio as #1. For sure, Romney is bland, but for sure, Americans may be scared to death of another wild card like Obama. We got change all right… or maybe I should say, “all left!” Rubio may be the best man for the #2 spot; but it’s still the #1 position we need to be praying about — Why isn’t Rubio or West or even Christie running for president? Do they know something (as apparently Hillary knows also) we don’t know about the next four years? It is apparent Republicans AND Democrats knew the economic train wreck that was coming after the last election.

  7. Dianne says:

None of the above. Want Chris Christie.

    • StealHer says:

, quoting Cedar:”The prebolm with “ABO” is that it is tribal, and all about blind Party loyalty”For me, it has NOTHING to do with party loyalty. For one, I’m not a republican, but much more to the point, Obama policies are a disaster. Any of the remaining 4 would be a great improvement.____________________Ditto

  8. Occam's Tool says:

I’m hoping for West. But I think Romney feels that he can bland into the White House. Obama is such a disaster, though.

  9. Joseph F. Yates says:

ANYBODY EVER THOUGHT ABOUT ” MICHAEL REAGAN ” AS A CHOICE ? VERY GOOD STATS .

  10. Dean McIntire says:

Jedediah Bila should know that Mark Rubio is not qualified to be a VP. Everybody should know why this is true. Are we all this uninformed?

  11. Dean McIntire says:

I would think that most people must realize that Mark Rubio can not qualify for VP. I am surprised that nobody is mentioning this. He is not a natural born US Citizen. Why would Jededhia Bila even offer his name in the poll?

  12. Gary Johnson says:

What difference does it make who is Vice President. or President? Our problems are with the Congress and Senate.

No one man can cure the the great ills of our country. Every elected representative in Washington should be REPLACED!

These are the people who did not represent us when they should have.

Install term limits. Make lobbying illegal!

  13. Allen West says:

Allen will be bold & will tell it like it is. He has 23 years in the military & can help Mitt in that area.

  14. JuanPablo says:

Romney’s ultimate VP cboice might be a “None of the above”, and will surprise all of us.
I suppose we are supposed to continue waiting around with abated breath.
    { YAWN }

  15. Tom says:

Rubio or West would be my favorites.
However, even if Romney smashes Obama, things will not change much in Washington. There will still be far to many liberals gumming up the works. Washington is a broken city with broken values, corruption and indifference. We cannot seem to fix one thing wrong in America.

  16. PaulE says:

Romney will choose Portman, because it’s the “safe choice”. While West, Ryan, Rubio and others would make it a more balanced ticket, but that’s not how the GOP leadership thinks. They like “safe” just as much as Romney likes “safe”. By the way, any choice is on the GOP ticket is infinitely better than the train wreck we have in the White House now.

  17. Arthur says:

What difference does it really make? Choosing between Romney and Obama is like choosing between tweedle dee and tweedle dum. Their both bought and paid for by the same Wall Street trash who run the Treasury and Federal Reserve.

    • W in NYC says:

Looking at the list, I agree that Portman is the best choice to win in November. And winning is the objective. I wish he were better known, but I don’t think the press could make his selection the issue all the way to election day. He would make a good number two man, standing behind Romney, nodding and backing him up. Don’t forget that Romney himself has sufficient gravitas; he doesn’t need to be buoyed by his veep. And Portman is from Ohio, a key state.

  18. lynnmaui says:

Allen West is the best choice because of his military experience

  19. Burton Harger says:

How about a different Allen than West? I’m talking about Allen Keyes. He’s a great conservative, but has always lacked the financial backing neeeded to win. Wtih Rmney’s money, wouldn’t these two make a great pair? He has served well in many capacities, he is well educated and quite articulate. Let’s here it for Allen Keyes!

  20. Edward says:

Hands down, Congressman Allen West. His love and loyaly to this country is second to none. We also need a person who is security savvy and with a no nonsense approach to help build back a strong and solid America that the world has seen since after WW2.

  21. Rebecca Meter says:

    ALLEN WEST!!!!

  22. W in NYC says:

To continue, pick someone more conservative or less but someone with a name like Lugar or Hatch. A key state would be good.

  23. W in NYC says:

The most important thing is that Romney pick someone who is known. No more Quails or Palins that the press can define and make an issue up to election day. If Romney picks another unknown, he ends his chances.

  24. Peggy Stevens says:

ALLEN WEST for sure !!! He is black, he is gutsy and he’s telling it like it is !!!

  25. OKPatriot says:

Of all the people mentioned in the poll, I think Col. Allen West would be the best overall choice. Another possibility that has not been mentioned is Gov. Bob McDonald of Virginia. He has done an excellent job in governing his state, and he would help bring Virginia back into the Republican column.

  26. Jim in Florida says:

    My order:

    1. Allen West for reasons already stated

    2. Rick Santorum – 2nd most votes in primary and a true conservative with family values now needed more than ever

    3. Newt Gingrich – Biden is debate with would make it worth it, and no better attack dog

    4. Marco Rubio – maybe too early but someday he will be on the ticket

    5. Herman Cain – maybe too much duplicate strengths with Romney, primarily business, no knowledge of how Senate works, so gave nod to Rick and Newt for that

    • Rachel Ross says:

Rubio TOO soft on illegal immigration, he’s with Obama on that one- so is Romney as a matter of fact…

  27. Scott Scarborough says:

How about a REAL conservative…Ron Pau!

  28. Van Hamlin says:

Romney needs to pick the candidate that will help him win in one of three states; Ohio, Virginia or Florida. Rubio can campaign very effectively in the southwest and far west by appealing to Hispanics at a personal level. Portman is too much like Romney. Put a sweater on the guy and stand him next to a fence. You have a Ozzie Nelson clone! Obama is way ahead in probable electoral votes; we need a winner with charisma to run beside Mitt. Man! I hope conservatives win this election! As they say in Chicago, “Vote early and vote often!”

  29. B Sram says:

I think Mike Huckabee would be a good VP. He is articulate, sharp, conservative and bold. He would be a good compliment to Romney.

  30. Walt says:

The Republicans and the TEA need to get together to get the presidency and control of the senate and house not only in Washington but in state and local goverment positions. Cut the spending and leave taxes as they are. We must turn the corner and start in a new direction. It may take the rest of this century to get our nation back to a pay as you go Christian nation. We won’t be around to see it but our grand children might be.

  31. Borden says:

Do not think BEST VP. THINK WIN WIN. Pick a minority that will take away votes from that unamerican. THINK WIN. Rice would be best but West or Mariou.OK What is wrong with VP Bill Cosby. It would be a landslide for Romeny. THINK WIN WIN not best VP. TAXPAYERS MONEY FOR US CITIZENS ONLY go with that slogan for more votes. THINK WIN WIN not bestVP

  32. nkj767 says:

Disgusting that the top two are so flawed–Rubio with a birther problem and West who SUPPORTS AND DEFENDS THE NDAA!! DO YOU WANT TO BE DETAINED INDEFINITELY AS WEST WOULD APPARENTLY LIKE?!!

    • Rachel Ross says:

They could have detained James Holmes if anyone had been paying attention….

    • Satoshi says:

I’ll right away grab your rss as I can’t to find your e-mail subscription hyeprlink or newsletter service. Do you’ve any? Please let me realize in order that I could subscribe. Thanks.Thanks. You are better at our language than I am at yours.Regards. Ed.

  33. Tom O'Rourke says:

People — get comfy with Tim Pawlenty (T-Paw) — he has the governing and negotiation skills and is tough. He was a great Commander in Chief of the Minnesota National Guard. I served with the 1/34 BCT in Southern Iraq and they were the best, bravest and most resourceful warrior I have served with. I believe they reflected the leadership they served under and T-Paw was at the top of that chain of command.

    Go Red Bulls!

    • Don Marshall says:

Pawlenty and Portman would be great candidates for VP but for one thing. The average American, not those of us who follow politics, upon hearing those two names would say “who”. We need a strong conservative who is already known to the public, not someone who only has a little over three months to get him or herself known. That’s my opinion but then again I could be wrong.

      • Robert Bowers says:

You are not wrong. The pick should be someone the voters have already got to know. I am always amazed at the discussions of how great a person is as a Senator or Congressman, but then we say take them out of there and put them where they will be powerless for the next 4 years. We need these people to stay in Congress and help hold the line. Rick Santorum has met the people and the people have met him. I believe that if the press had not been so intent on telling voters Romney is the only one that can beat Obama, Santorum would be the candidate now instead of Romney.

    • jwoodie says:

Don’t discount the anti-white male bias which is so pervasive in many quarters. Unfortunately, it may now be impossible to elect two on the same ticket.

    • Rachel Ross says:

      Yawn!

  34. Carl in SC says:

Let him pick Lindsay Graham of SC so we can get him out of the senate and elect a real conservative to the senate. Graham is a RINO and helped get two liberal socialist progressive antiAmerican women into the US Supreme Court. Maybe as VP he will not be as much of a problem and he’ll get the national exposure needed to show he is not a conservative.

    • Chet says:

Why not just vote him out of the system altogether, along with a lot of other do nothing washington insiders.

    • Van Hamlin says:

Amen to that brother! a Right wing elitist ready to commit social Darwinism and tell you that he is doing foe you!

    • Rachel Ross says:

We need a RINO in the White House? I don’t think so. Lindsay Grahamnesty needs to go on to his life’s work

  35. Holt says:

What about Condoleeza Rice? I have heard rumblings that she was in the running.

  36. David says:

Have any of you looked at 60 plus origanization? I haven’t my self. I have heard some good about tbem. I do know like us, they have no use for warp. They speak ill of them!

  37. James Dougherty says:

Who’s the MAN! Gov. Scott Walker. Who has bigger ones than this guy! He has a proven track record in Wisconsin. The Evil Union and commies all bowed to his power. He will take a stand for traditional USA in Washington and maybe give Romney the strength to pose a real opposition to the Obamination that must be stopped. Walker’s standoff in Wis. puts him a notch above West.

    • Rachel Ross says:

Don’t think Scott Walker’s going anywhere after that knockdown, drag out fight. Maybe he can give lessons…?

  38. Deborah says:

My greatest fear is that Romney will (as someone else pointed out) choose a bland vanilla candidate – like a Portman or Pawlenty – and the election, which SHOULD BE a landslide for the Republicans – will become so much of a snooze -the socialists will get in again – in spite of the horrible mess the country is in!

Wouldn’t this be McCain all over again!?? Although at least McCain had Sarah Palin to give us something to get excited about. If Romney picks Pawlenty or Portman, we won’t even have that.

  39. LaVerne Flosi says:

Marco Rubio was born in the U.S. but his parents were not American citizens. They became American citizens when Marco was 14 years old, which makes him ineligible to be Vice President because they were not citizens when he was born.

    • Terry Story says:

That is incorrect, he was born in the United States and the courts and all of the political spectrum have held many times over that birth within the United States confers natural born citizenship on a person. That is where all of the anchor babies come from as well, and then their families get green cards to stay in the US.

  40. RiveRat says:

I think we’re missing the boat, if we don’t throw Jan Brewer into the mix..

  41. Raymond Benning says:

I would like to see a Libertarian for vice peesident.

  42. Darlene Betterton says:

ALLEN WEST, ALLEN WEST, ALLEN WEST………HE IS GOING THROUGH SOME HEAT BUT, HE IS
    THE BEST CHOICE
ALLEN WEST IS MILITARY AND HE KNOWS THE OTHER IMPORTANT SIDE TO RUNNING THIS
COUNTRY……He knows and is right about what the democrats have and are doing to the black and Hispanic community…No one ever feels valuable or can they ever have a purpose when someone else takes that
right from them and lowers them down to being dependent….Most of them who are dependent have sunk so low they don’t know they are enslaved…that is a shame

Babies should not be born to people so they can get a check nor should they be conceived so they can be killed in the womb. where is the responsibility to govern ones self…..Are people that weak?…apparently

This administration is all about tearing this country down and moving us into tyranny…..It goes round and
round year after year and I am sick of government taking from all of us …all of us who work many hours
building our businesses just to have it all taken from us.

Seriously, I am fed up and it is hard to want to work when it is threatened with regulations , taxes, taxes
and what it costs to have employee’s you want to bless and take care. Shame on the government and the unions
for raping the American people who do provide so much to this nation and it’s success just to see it wasted
squandered and ruined by greedy, power hungry politicians who use us and abuse us/

No wonder they fear freedom of speech and the right to bear arms…..that is what those provisions are for
to keep them in line and accountable to us…The people….

Politicians have no right to use us and abuse us and have privileges we don’t have…..In sider trading….is
one biggy….how dare they get rich because they are an elected official…..HOW DARE THEY !!!!!

    • Paul says:

To me Congressman/Colonel Allen West is the only choice. He is an honest All American Man with Integrity. He loves his Country not his party and for that reason neither the Depublicans nor the Remocrats like him. I am sure the averidge Amarican would love to see him there, I would even work for Romney/West ticket. Otherwise Would just cast a vote against Obama

  43. Independent 1000 says:

If you are, as a website, going to stop a post from appearing in this thread, you should let the person posting know why? Thats two posts about Rubio……..facts about Rubio’s Eligibility that were not accepted.
Anyone that thinks Rubio is not Eligible…………is wrong. He is eligible to run for VP. Whether he is Qualified is another issue that can be debated.

  44. brad rebers says:

Is this the very same Paul Ryan who cliams to oppose Obama Care but continues to fund it through the CR!s and raising the debt ceiling,I am telling you Paul Ryan is a phony,he also wants to raise the age of SSI,a program which should be made voluntary,at least West had the courage to call SSI a form of slavery.Rubio also supports a form of the dream act, West or Jindahl for VP.

  45. PapaJohn says:

My first choice is Allen West – second would be Marco Rubio. If neither of them, then I think John Bolton would be fantastic.

  46. R Pulley says:

What we must focus on is is the best candidate to beat Obama which is part show business part politics mixed with ability. It is tough choice with great candidates. I think West or Rubio have the best chance. I read somewhere that George Soros is spending $$$$$ to discredit West. He must be doing something right. We have to consider how the undecided voters view the VP pick.

    • Mary says:

I Rubio is not a natural born citizen, neither is Obama. His father was not a U.S. citizen.

      • Independent 1000 says:

        Factually incorrect.

        • gwinf says:

Care to provide proof? How can the son of two resident aliens be eligible? His parents did not become citizens till after his birth, which means he is not “Natural Born”.

  47. The Ol' Kaboy says:

As the man once said..”go West young man, go West”…but should’ve included Young Women, Old Women, Old Men, & any others to “Go West”!!!

  48. Barry says:

Allen West is stronger than a garlic milkshake! While I would hate to lose him here in Florida, the country needs him more!

    • Independent 1000 says:

Barry, Allen West is a known Target of the George Soros organizations and the DNC in his district. Not sure if I would pick him for VP, but I would certainly find a place for him in a National Security related Department or Agency.

      • gwinf says:

So will anyone else that is chosen for VP. What is so unusual about a Conservative politician being a target of our arch enemy George Soros?

  49. Jag for America says:

While Rubio may be “qualified”, he is not “eligible” to serve as President because he is not a Natural Born Citizen!

Romney must choose another qualified individual to prevent another major eligibility distraction during his term, if elected.

    • Sam G. says:

      Exactly, Jag!

      RUBIO IS NOT QUALIFIED!!

      Geez, people, wake up!

    • Joyce says:

Sorry, JAG for America. Acccording to all info I was able to see, Marco Rubio was born in Miami. I know that may seem like another country, but it isn’t:c)

      • Pat Turner says:

Rubio is an anchor baby, yes, born in Miami, but NATURAL BORN CITIZENSHIP follows from the father. You might want to do a bit of research on that one to see if his daddy was a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN — if not, then there’s nothing Rubio can do to become one.

        • loran says:

I agree with you about anchor babies. They really shoudn’t be considered in regards to the 14th amendment. That’s not why it was written. However, the libs years ago established it as such and the republicans let the get away with it. This begs the question; with whom do we get angry with, the dems or the republicans? Anyway, I say lets take advantage of this and let Rubio have his day.

      • michael r. cipolla says:

Sorry Joyce, to be eligable to be President of the US, you must be born in the US of a Mother and a Father that are both American Citizens…that is the definition of Natural Born citizen

      • Paul says:

Kenya is an other country yet our current President was born there He is olso part of that religion of peace that hates our Judeo Christian values

    • Bill says:

Rubio a Non-Qualified Naturla Born Citizen! Not an issue! Neither is the sitting President.

  50. Sophie Rothfield says:

My first choice is Marco Rubio. He is a young, vibrant, energetic and moral conservative. I also think Allen West would be great however, I feel Rubio would relate more to younger people as well as to the Hispanic population.

  51. OE says:

‘If not , MARCO RUBIO; ‘SCOTT WALKER or PAUL RYAN would be ideal; ‘NO, NO to Pawlenty; ‘Or – ANY other “career politician” ! ‘Maybe, Portman or Thune (??) ‘Or any similar, WELL – QUALIFIED CONSERVATIVE !…..

  52. Hijalibre says:

Why wasn’t Bobby Jindal on the list? I think he is an amazing person! He is not afraid to speak out the truth. He is very articulate and intelligent. If it’s color that people are looking for, he is of Indian descent. I think Marco Rubio is an up and coming person, but still way too young to take over the country if he must. After Jindal, my choice would be Allen West. He is courageous, articulate, intelligent, and willing to stand for what is right! May God give Romney wisdom as to who to choose.

    • NH Lady says:

      I agree with you!

I believe Jindal is on Romney’s list and will probably bring him in as head of Health and Human Services. He’s done some incredible work in his state with that issue.

  53. ijohn69 says:

Whom ever Romney chooses would be better than the dufus we now have as vice president.
Allen West, Marco Rubio,Portman,Kermit, the list is endless, Romney will do the right thing, I don’t need to hold my nose to vote for him, after the 2002 olympiad, it is a no brainer.

    • Hijalibre says:

I also am THRILLED to have Romney as our candidate. He is a winner who is willing to show America how to win also! I was for him in 2008, but maybe now we can finally put this amazing man in office!

  54. Harley John says:

I agree keep Rubio in the Senate and Allen West as VP. I just love Allen West’s gustsy straight forewardness.

I’m sick of Tim Pawlenty and what he wants.

  55. Michael W. Lyons says:

Time and time again the nation (conservative and boarderline) respond to the straight talk, non polictically correct rhetoric of the Candidates. The tough no nonsense tell it like it is candidates rise quickly and also take the knocks from the Left. Then the same candidates tend to back off and play nice. It is far past that and Reagon proved it. We are in tough times with a president with socialistic thinking and conquest idealizations. It is not the time to worry about offending the Left. They are not going to vote for Republicans anyway. The nation as a whole is tired of spin, they want to know straight truthful talk and action. This is One Nation under God, not Obama, and at least until November, we still have freedom of speach. What are they afraid of?!!!

    • Harley John says:

You are right. I’m so sick of the PC stuuf the Left keeps pushing on us. We need to get some b… and fight back. If we don’t do it now tomorrow will be too late.

      GOD BLISS AMERICA

  56. samnjoeysgrama says:

I have met Allan West, and more importantly, I worked with his wife. West is my choice. Period.

    • Paul says:

I saw West on the TV he really impressed me too. He is an All American and a war hero too. If Romney doesn’t pick him shame on him

  57. Diane says:

Extremely intelligent, knowledgeable, exciting, experienced, and a winner for sure! Who? Condolezza Rice!

    • Hijalibre says:

She is definitely all those things you said about Condi. However, she is also pro-choice! Therefore, she is not my choice!

  58. sid says:

i like marco, but personally, i think he would better help the country, in congress, then the wh!!! susana martinez or kelly ayotte would make fine candidates!!!

  59. Tim - Garage Politician says:

I live in Minnesota and so I have had a lot of experience in suffering from the Pawlenty era. I hope Romney does not choose the ultimate RINO – Pawlenty for his running mate. Pawlenty has said over and over that he believes the government has a role in the private sector. He loves to build stadiums, light rail, as well as Ethanol facilities. He almost single handedly forced smokers out into the cold. I bet he thought in the end they would thank him in for it.

  60. john p. waldron says:

I wood rather have someone who is not a politician for vice President .
someone like Herman Cain A Business type person wood be
good for the country . instead of the same old stupid way’s Politician’s
have to much baggage and to many favors .

  61. Sharon Holley says:

I would rather see him pick Rick Santorum than Pawlenty or Portman. I would LOVE Allen West. We haven’t had anyone as gutsy since Truman! And his knowledge of history, especially of the middle east, is so impressive. I love hathe calls a spade a spade! 2nd choice, very close behind, is Rubio. I just hope the “establishment” doesn’t co-opt him and make him too much of a politician.

    • sid says:

      agree!!!

    • G. Hilbert says:

A few of the difficulties we face are now and in the near future are: The economy, a rapid scew to the left and the muslim threat. All are real and all have great impact on individual agency. I’m pretty sure Romney gets it and I’m real sure that Allen West gets it. Allen West is articulate if not expert on all three. He is my pick for VP.

  62. Louise Purvis says:

I feel we need someone who would excite the voters and not scare the independents. Paul Ryan is a great choice as he presents the facts, he’s likeable and won’t back down when he’s right. And he is right. Love Allen West also. We definitely need someone the Tea Party can vote for.

    • sid says:

remember one thing. many independents, myself included, don’t like republicans, but do like “TEA”!!!

  63. PD-Hunter says:

While I like Marco Rubio, he is not a Natural Born Citizen. Even though he was born in Florida, his parents were not US Citizens at the time of his birth. We now have a non-NBC in the White House now, and we don’t need to continue with that mistake. I think Allen West would be a great choice.

  64. Bill Armstrong says:

Alan West sounds like the best choice for my family and I

I am 84, and have voted in every election that I was eligible.

  65. Shay Jones says:

Thank you for the poll and chance to comment!

It is refreshing to read comments seasoned with reason and care. If I could wave a conservative “magic wand” it would be Sarah Palin in the Vice Presidential spot; since that is not plausible my vote is for Allen West. I heard him speak to conservative college students on C-Span along with Michele Bachmann, and he was very impressive – a real leader! I am uncomfortable with Marco Rubio due to his Amnesty leanings and comments in the recent past; I agree he needs to stay in the Senate where he could be the most effective.

In the end, although I did not vote for Romney in the Primary, I will pinch my nose and vote for the Republicans because I believe America will descend into utter darkness and chaos if we have four more years of the dictator in the White House.

May God Bless and Keep America FREE!

  66. Jannie W says:

Marco Rubio is not qualified to be president if President Romney were to die or become disabled. He is too young and will let as many Latinos into our country as want to come here. Col. West is my choice.

    • Independent 1000 says:

I can’t think of anyone in our history that has been less qualified to be President than Obama. Look where he is at today? We still don’t know who he is, where he came from, and who orchestrated his becoming President. We have some good ideas though.

      • JuanPablo says:

Obama’s ultimately orchestrated by Communist Party USA.
That’s who greatly helped to put him there, continues to pull his “strings”, controls his teleprompter, and CPUSA has greatly infiltrated the Democrat Party.

  67. michael says:

Let us be clear…..ALLEN WEST. Truly i would have to vote for him as president if he ran. He will balance the moderate leanings of Gov, Romney. I do believe the gov is an honest yet moderate man. We dont need moderation, we need a warrior! We certainly dont need the charlatan who is in the white house now.

    • Sharon Holley says:

Well said! And the not natural born citizen in charge may have to be removed because of it! Couldn’t happen if we voted another one in..

    • JuanPablo says:

Allen West – a great NON-Rino politician, has repeated stated that he is not yet ready for the VP position.

  68. Fran says:

ARGHH!!! People don’t seem to understand that Marco Rubio — wonderful though he may be — is NOT a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN! His parents were not yet citizens when he was born! We can hardly demand a requirement for a Republican that we shout about in a Democrat.

  69. Alan Patrick says:

Great pole! Now have the gumption to put out one with Palin’s name. Palin vs. Romney and others, maybe include Obu ma (or who ever he really is). Palin is the only one to put forth real solutions to how to bring back the nation to prosperity.Of course the “good OLD BUDDIES” of Washington are against her. They know that their days would be numbered with her “purge and cleanse” and bipartisan presidency. It is not possible now but with a strong and young Republican Senate and House it could happen!

    • alex says:

allen, you are probably the smartest writer on any of these blogs

      • linda walker says:

I agree with alex! She’s a tough cookie and certainly knows her stuff. Most men discount her without knowing the facts of her record. It’s easy to throw stones when you don’t know all the facts.

  70. Eve says:

    He should pick Sen. Thune.

  71. Leonard says:

I am 74 years old and can remember FDR. I dont believe the amount of money being spent on campaigns and the fights and dirty back stabbing techniques being used today, Try spending some of that money to improve the seniors way of living. I am sure Mitt. will chose a candidate for the liberals and the liberal press will eat up and spit out.
Its disgusting to see this smoke and mirrors act. It is time we all work together to bring back the GOOD OLE U.S.A.

    • alex says:

lenard if you think FDR was good you must love obozo

    • Sharon Holley says:

Talk about smoke and mirrors! I don’t think you can actually remember FDR…you probably remember all the hype written about him in the progressive media. He was the most influential president to put us on the road to a communist way of life. He even gave Stalin our nuclear technology! It’s the progressives who have started all the outrageous campaign spending…they get all that money from the unions, and the donors don’t even have to write checks!

  72. law judge says:

I like Allen West and Rubio both. Rubio is not a shill for immigration. Rubio recongnizes the need for justice in this matter and our Nations involvement in NOT protecting our boarders and why. Immigration is a great problem but our Nation is built on humanity and justice and we cannot open the back door, invite people in, and then kick them out without seperating the wheat from the chaff. Col. West is a rightious American hero who has served this Nation well. He is a conservative and that will not go down well with the black leaders whose powers are derived from their hate of everything white and built on lracial discord. Both men are great patriots. I considered many aspects, and want anyone other then the dictator in chief, Obama, to be our next President. Allen West was is my choice among others.
Rubio may bring in some Hispanic votes, and West might bring in some Black votes. If this break in the Democratic ranks would be enough to trounce Obama is highly questionable. It is difficult to break bad habits, such as voting for a political party without regard for what it stands for at the time.

  73. George says:

I am disappointed in AMAC and this writer. You do a poll to determine where voters support their candidate, the voters show that support in black and white, then you write an article supporting Romney and his possible choice of ‘pastels’. I am and have been an avid supporter of Allen West for several years, he is my ONLY choice for VP and yet you find a way to negate it. Again, more of the same old same old, afraid to ‘offend’ someone.

    • Howard says:

Did you really read what she wrote? What part of the last sentence don’t you understand?

“However, is it possible that Romney recognizes the need right now for courageous policy and even more courageous messengers? Sure it is. And for the country’s sake, I certainly hope so.”

  74. John Atwood says:

We cannot afford to lose a US senator such as Rubio or some of the other GOP senators mentioned. Why not Huckabee or Jeb Bush?

    • Herbster says:

Huckabee and Jeb Bush are both good men. However, they are yesterday’s news. Huckabee is probably doing more good and reaching more people with a positive message through his excellent TV show than he could as VP. Jeb Bush is (Unfortunately) handicapped by his last name. The state run media would have a field day denigrating another Bush. This would serve only to further close off any exposure of Romney’s message. Who should Romney choose? Whomever he chooses must receive the backing of us all, whether we are happy with the choice, or not.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Romney promised to nominate Dan Cathy as Secretary of Labor. It would be fun to see the mediapimps go apoplectic!

    • Sharon Holley says:

ENOUGH OF THE RINOS! Huckabee has cute dimples and a great personality…but…he’s more of an entertainer than presidential material. He’s not a fiscal conservative. And would you really want another Bush to encourage
the open border policy that is bleeding us dry?!

  75. Nancy says:

West would be great. I think the press would eat Rubio alive. He is a good guy, just too young and inexperienced. They don’t mind that Obama had no experience at anything, but everybody running against him must have more experience than God! West would give it right back to them. If Romney picks Pawlenty or Portman, I think Obama will win. God help us!!!!!

  76. MaysMillicent says:

just as Theresa explained I’m amazed that any body can profit $5402 in 4 weeks on the computer. have you seen this page lazycash42-c()m

  77. Richard Matthews says:

The problem is that we need leaders like West, Rubio, Paul, and Ryan to stay in Congress and fight against the Emperor or a RINO President.

  78. RosiesSeeingRed says:

I don’t think Romney has the guts to pick a VP like Allen West, which is unfortunate. I wonder if there’s a dark horse candidate being considered, someone like Rand Paul maybe? Romney would do himself a favor if he chose one of the Tea Party backed game changers, instead of playing it safe.

    • alex says:

he would only be doing himself a favor if he intends to win but i think he is just another mccain unfortunately i have to vote for him

  79. Dave says:

Dang, I miss all the talk about Ron Paul! None the less, I think Romney would make a decent VP in another election, just not this one. Do we really have a choice in this election? With Romney, you’re one click above Obsma…he’s at least legal. America gets what it ask for. I’m not happy with any of the ‘actual’ choices we have coming in November. See ya at the, ‘How did this happen”, station!

  80. David Richie says:

Allen West would make the best choice for vice-president, and after eight years with president Mitt Romney, president.

  81. Dwain Dye says:

I am a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer and 74 years old. I can remember presidents all the way back to FDR. Of all the ones mentioned for VP, I think Allen West would make the best choice and would balance the Republican ticket, seeing Romneys liberal leanings.

  82. Geri Della Pietro says:

Another thing we need to do before we make decisions on the reasons we don’t want someone as vp is make sure we truly know the position that someone takes on matters that most concern us. Often people hear only what they want to hear and they pay no attention to what the person is actually saying. We will never be 100% for one particular person because they are HUMAN just like us; the best we can do is make a plus and minus chart and work from there.

  83. Lew says:

Reading your poll and reacting to it is great. It is good to read all of the comments. I also like Marco Rubio but I do worry that we need a strong voice in the U. S. Senate and in order to get and keep the majority in the Senate we need to keep him there for now. Let him work in the Senate and show the voters his bonifides. I also wonder why Bob McDonnell was left out of the survey. I also wonder why Mike Huckaby was left out of the discussion. I am not enthused with Portman or Pawlenty. We do need to remember that our goal must be to remove the current occupants of the White House. Although I am tired of voting for the best of two bad choices, I do not see any way around this vote. I did not vote for Romney in the primary but I will vote for him and whoever is the vice-presidential candidate. By the way, I always thought Sarah Palin helped John McCain not that she was a drag on the ticket. McCain would have lost by a much larger margin without the fire of a strong vice-presidential candidate. I hope that this is a lesson for Governor Romney. Go team!! We all need to get behind this election and work on bettering our candidates for the future.

  84. Steve Heifner says:

First priority folks is to WIN this election at all costs ! It’s that critical to the future of America. This is not normal voting as years ago when qualifications and experience told most of the story. We have a completely polarized electorate now based upon race, charisma, looks, speech making and issues almost completely irrelevant to the ability to properly and righteously govern. So sad to say here, but true. Therefore, which man/person would carry the most vote is the only meaningful issue to WINNING. It has to be race or ethnic based now as is the case. Rubio or West are the only qualifiers then to this end.
Why not poll again with these two as only choices. We must get the vote people. There you go.

  85. charlie king says:

This country is in deep trouble with Obama but he will do anything to get elected. I personnally think he is a Marxist. Romney had better be ready for the dirtiest campaign ever!!!!!

    • Steve Heifner says:

A Marxist, a communist,a left-wing liberal, an anti-American and a Muslim to boot. We elected an enemy of America people. We must get he demon out!!!!

  86. David says:

The State of Virginia’s own George Allen has to be one of the most impressive Republicans in politics. His experience as a Congressman, Senator and Governor is second to none. Yes, he is currently running for the U.S. Senate but I am surprised no one has mentioned him as a VP possibility.

  87. charlie king says:

History tells us that the VP choice rarely helps but it will be very important this time.

  88. charlie king says:

Gov Mike Huckabee would help him most. Do not unnderstand why he is not on prospective list!!!

    • SLDTX says:

I think Romney will not pick Mike Huckaby, because he (Mike) would be more popular than the president

  89. Geri Della Pietro says:

I have liked both Marco Rubio and Allen West from the start and I hope Mr. Romney picks one of them. We NEED a person who is able to handle the MEDIA (MEDIA MATTERS and their control) with intelligence, dignity, and of course, the public seems to go for a person that looks good and both these gentlemen have such qualities. I have followed both of these men and they are excellent speakers without using a teleprompter.

  90. Walt says:

Rubio is certainly acceptable. But why no mention
    of Bob McDonnell ?

    • Treasa says:

Doesn’t anyone realize that Rubio wants to give Amnesty to all illegals? He would be my last choice for VP. Allen West would be the better of the 2 top picks. He is a true Patriot and doesn’t want to give our country away to a bunch of criminals. Any person that crosses the border without the proper papers or overstays when their visa’s expire has broken the first law of this land. Laws that need to be enforced but won’t be if Rubio is picked.

      • Ray Mason says:

I agree with Treasa. Another note, look past Rubios’ “smoothe character” and he is missing something. Don’t forget, the current resident of the white house is a “smoothe character”. Allen West is and has been at the top of my list. Another blogger mentioned Bob McDonnell, well I live in Virginia and Bob McDonnell has all the markings of a RINO, we already have plenty of those.

        • NH Lady says:

I see no RINO in McDonnell unless you are referring to the fact he is capable of working with both parties.

I’ve been a Repoublican all of my life and some on the far right are truly our of control. Choosing candidates based on the color of their skin? Do you really believe blacks will jump ship for a number 2 on the ticket?

      • Tim says:

I do believe Colonel West’s parents were American’s at the time of his birth, making HIM a “no brainer”! How Rubio (I do like the guy) can even be considered is beyond me. Is this a matter of “if you can’t beat em’, join em’ “? NOT QUALIFIED is NOT QUALIFIED!

  91. cookiejar says:

West is by far the best choice. He will have unlimited value in advising the President especially in military matters. Rubio has more to offer by remaining in the Senate.

  92. Apanda says:

I know this is a serious site, however, all i can think about is dang Ms. Bila is gorgeous.

  93. Lora says:

What do polls like this matter. Romney is going to pick a snore like Tim Pawlenty. So why even try.

    • Don says:

Strong possibilty. He is not a winning choice. I like Romneys business experience but he needs to be dareing and go with a strong candidate

    • Ray Mason says:

Yes Lora, lets’ all just lie down and get trampled.

  94. brian conway says:

What a pleasure to read a well thought out poll and read comments from conservatives who are not just spewing bile and irrational personal hatred as is common on the liberal sites.

    Well done, JB

  95. brian conway says:

Marco Rubio seems to bring the most to the table. Youth, good looks, articulate, and charming. (Sorry but those attributes do sell) He is a conservative and proud of it. Colonel West is right up there but he has thus far not shown much interest in the VP slot. I like Ryan, but he comes across as being a little strident. Again, the likeability factor sells. Condi Rice, a good person, is really that conservative. I like the fact that we have a choice of qualified people who if not chosen will still be the framework for a great competent cabinet.

  96. Len Bliss says:

Voting by your poll choices, everyone missed the mark. West has been in the House about 1.5 years, Ryan 13.5 years ( and an important comm. chairmanship) and Ryan supported Romney in the beginning. Ryan and Rubio are born Catholics ( a nice balance to LDS), but Rubio just started his first term in national politics. Started as Senator in 2011, 1.5 years in US Senate. In 8 years a Ryan – Rubio (vp) ticket would be unbeatable, and could lead to the first 24 year long conservative stewardship. That is what the country needs! Conservative stability, leadership, and experience are what America requires to get out of this Marxist mess we have now. Obama destroyed so much in his term, we cannot expect to fix everything in 8 years. We can look forward to America’s return to greatness and renewed world leadership with all the confidence we deserve. With Romney we will regain our world leadership role, and lower unemployment, with Ryan we will continue those and add reduced debt, resulting in greater investment and growth. I cannot see more than 16 years ahead now; too many variables.

    • Sharon Holley says:

Ryan is a very good man and he would be among my top picks. But west is a born leader, very smart and decisive. There is no doubt about where he stands on issues Ryan would make a great financial adviser to the president!

  97. mzha says:

I also voted for Rubio in your poll. I really do hope Romney and his consultants think long and hard about Rubio, and of course I hope Rubio will accept. My gut feeling is that Rubio will make a great VP. (We suffered so long with Biden) with his off the path comments and stupid remarks.

  98. Todd P says:

Rubio, West, or Ryan are all great choices. So is Condi Rice (not mentioned), although she would be linked to Bush. The others are bland; Romney needs someone dynamic who will excite the conservative base. No one is perfect; not Rubio, and not West. But both would be great, as would be Ryan (IMHO). Either of these would be great VPs, and if necessary, President.

  99. John Hutchinson says:

Hopefully Romney’s “Handlers” peruse Jedediah’s articles, blogs, commentary, etc. & are intellectually astute to grasp her ‘Reganesque’ BOLD COLORS metaphor !!! Here in Coronado,Ca – home of the Navy Seals- ‘Prevent Defense’ is NOT in the playbook & exhibits weakness… Xerxes (AKA Obama) will prevail if Romney’s campaign continues to emulate one of the worst ever-that of John McCain- …….Rubio or West have the ‘hutzba’ (spelling?) to help Mitt in his quest to once again make it a “Morning in America” moment !!

  100. EclecticHorseman says:

Romney is poised to bring in a big win. But IMHO he needs to make a bold move to seal the deal. That means Allen West. Yes, West is controversial but he is a military man, a stalwart conservative, and putting him on the ticket would galvanize conservatives behind Romney, giving him enthusiastic support rather than the tepid “he’s not Obama” stuff. And need I add that nominating West would shatter the existing racial divides?

    • Ray Harrison says:

I agree with Col. West. I didn’t get to vote yesterday, but if I did, it would have been for the Colonel!

  101. Ray Berryhill Sr says:

I voted for Allen West in your poll, I don’t understand why we don’t hear more about him. I have been very impressed with what I have seen and heard, which has been very little.

    • Richard says:

Too controversial and would distract from Romney’s message. We don’t need to relearn what we learned in 2008. Palin was pilloried by the left from the first day. It would show bad judgment by Romney. I like West. But that comment about the Communists in the House was over the top because he can’t prove it. They will make him look like McCarthy. We don’t need that. We have to keep our eye on the prize that is to remove this fraud from the WH. Failure to do so will mean we will be fighting over the cardboard boxes as we maneuver for room under the bridges when the economy collapses.

      • Sharon Holley says:

If you read her book, GOING ROGUE, you would see how McCain’s team sabatoged Sara. They wouldn’t let her speak from her heart, which is what gave her such appeal. They didn’t coach her in the right areas to deal with the likes of Katie Couric. Then 2 days before the election, McCain gets in front of the camera and tells us we don’t have anything to fear if Obama is elected! I think even h voted for Obama!

  102. Richard says:

Portman should be the Veep candidate. He’s qualified and will help in Ohio. This is Romney’s election to lose. He can’t afford a bad choice. Portman is a solid guy all around. Not charismatic but neither is Romney. What we need now is competence. The election should be entirely about Obama’s incompetence, Marxism, and economy.

  103. lost561 says:

Maybe we should go back to the way they did it in the first years of this Country where the Winner became President and second place became Vice president.
Let’s make Obama Vice President and shove him in the same Closet Joe Biden has been living in these past 3 1/2 years.

  104. lost561 says:

I think Romney should pick the guy from one of those Twilight Movies. He’ll get the votes of all the 16 year old girls in the Country. Oh, right 16 is too young to vote. But since the D.O.J. is against voter ID. maybe nobody will notice.

  105. hrh says:

All of you voting for Rubio need to research him more thoroughly and listen to him more clearly.

HINT: He is a Jeb Bush client, recruited by and rode to Florida Speaker of the House based on Bush backing. He does whatever the Bush Familia tells him. Remember how neither Jeb nor Rubio endorsed Romney in Florida until after the primary? And then Jeb endorsed and within days Rubio endorsed?

For that matter, it was Rubio’s staff who pushed to have the Florida primaries moved up a month at the request of the Bush Familia to favor Romney.

    Rubio is proamnesty.

As someone already pointed, out, Rubio has no problem with the Muslim Brotherhood infiltrating our government.

Who will be our Whitaker Chambers and out the Muslim Brotherhood’s heavy influence throughout our federal government? And who will be Chambers’ Nixon, who was a House Rep at the time, who supported Chambers testimony?

    Hint: Not Rubio.

    Allen West would.

  106. O. P. Ditch says:

Why is Gov Bob McDonnell not in your poll, and other polls?

  107. Craig says:

Mr. Rubio is my Senator and I am so proud of him. I’ve got to say – once I heard his speech at the Reagan Library, I knew that this individual would some day be our President. Mr. Romney could put him on that track and our country in a positive direction by choosing him as his running mate. Thanks JB for the poll.

  108. Curious says:

    West.

  109. Jeremy Bergmann says:

I’d rather see Romney pick Allen West. Nothing against Rubio, but when he goes after Bachmann for questioning whether or not our Government has been infiltrated by the Muslim Brotherhood, I can’t support him.

    • Ray Mason says:

You are correct Jeremy. Allen West is correct about socialist in the government and Bachmann is correct about the Muslim brotherhood influx. Rubio is not very smart, but he has a silver tongue, we already have one of those.

  110. Gregory Taylor says:

I have serious doubts as to Romney winning without Rubio on the ticket!!!

  111. Jewell Ottinger says:

I love Allen West but I would be fine with Rubio or Ryan. The others not so much. Mr. Romney, are you listening? Thanks for the poll, Jedediah!

  112. Larry J. Burton says:

I also support Marco Rubio! My opinion…The Republicans need an “ELOQUENT GUNSLINGER” who can stir up the electorate in a positive way and I think Rubio is that person!

    • Gary P Jackson says:

Rubio is an amnesty shill and an Establishment tool. Remember, he joined in with the GOP Elite attacking Michele Bachmann.

      Rubio is completely 100% unacceptable.

  113. Kenny says:

    Allen West all the way!

  114. Virginia Young says:

The number one choice was also my choice and has been for quite awhile. I admire boldness in face of the hypocrisy of the politicians. I feel Rubio is unchanged as of this writing. I hope he remains the same and does not buy into the current selling out of America.

  115. Michael says:

    Awesome poll, voted in it!
