Preamble: America is more than a place  –

As Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell leads platform delegates in Tampa this week to ratify the Republican Party platform, groups of every stripe and description are petitioning for inclusion of their policy priorities.

And while my own organization, the Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) — the conservative answer to AARP — wants support for several key initiatives such as Obamacare repeal, Social Security reform and the protection of religious liberty, we’ve come up with a non-policy idea.

This is an idea we think sets this platform apart, arrests some media attention and maybe even gains some historical notice.

Because politics is ultimately not about programs and policies but the great ideas, we believe Americans would find nothing more heartening than a preamble to this year’s platform that in speaking to the crisis of our time points to the basic sustaining notions of American democracy that career politicians so often forget.

Ronald Reagan’s name often gets invoked today as that of a great president. But surely, his greatness as a president rested on his understanding of the greatness of America.

He continually spoke of American democracy as unique because it rested on the idea that government gains its rights from the people, not the other way around. And then he would talk about the origin and source of that idea.

At the start of his administration in 1981 — at a moment of great domestic and international crisis, he told the students of Notre Dame University:

“It is time for the world to know our intellectual and spiritual values are rooted in the source of all strength, a belief in a Supreme Being, and a law higher than our own.”

Yes, “the source of all strength.”

So, too, Congressman Paul Ryan gave eloquent testimony to this same concept in his appearance last week with Gov. Mitt Romney:

“But America is more than just a place. … It’s an idea. It’s the only country founded on an idea. Our rights come from nature and God, not government.”

America as “more than just a place” but “an idea.” And our rights from “nature and God,” not government. Yes.

Here is the wisdom of the Founders and of all our great presidents. So we wrote to Gov. McDonnell with this suggestion: a preamble that cites just these words and ideas.

We believe a major party platform opening with these sentiments about the real source of our nation’s greatness would not only speak to the American people but renew their spirit.

Dan Weber is founder and president of the Association of Mature American Citizens.

The conservatives and most libertarians do not want one world government. Unfortunately the liberals, most moderates, the progressives (which is the same as saying liberal or socialist) do in fact want one world government. That’s why it is so important that we ger the conservative vote out to put a stop the the momentem that is currently taking us there and being led by Obama and the Democratic party. ( which mostly ia also socialist.)

Republican? democrat? which one will help, my opinion is neither. in my searches I found that both have ties to secret organizations that are promoting the “one world government!” I personally feel the only hope is to destroy any ties to the UN and other satanic agenda’s. The only party showing any leadership in renewed relationship to the true God is the Libertarian Party. I know that only intervention of God will save the destruction of our freedom, I still pray for a revival of the American People and that includes the mind. America wake up and read the writing on the wall. Daniel Chapter 5.
God is giving America the warning’s now.

Natural rights are in Declaration of Independence. Maybe that’s what Ryan was referring to. Check it out. Thanks.

Let’s define our terms, O. K? Those of us who believe in “natural rights,” do not mean “nature” in the sense of flowers and trees and birds and bees. We mean that every human is born with characteristics that include the possession of certain rights. We might communicate more clearly if, instead of referring to nature we said that every human being is born free, and has the right to enjoy that freedom to the extent that he or she does not interfere with the right of other humans’ rights to exercise the freedom with which they were born. A human characteristic of liberty balanced by responsibility. Those inborn characteristics are what we mean by “natural rights.” In other words, “human nature.” This does not in any way interfere with the faith many of us (including me, if you care) that we are created with these characteristics by God. I… Read more »

David, thank you for your post and clarifying the terms being ‘debated’ here. As a Christian I have no difficulty with the terms as used in our founding documents nor in the phrase used by Paul Ryan because I believe they were, and are, meant in the ways you pointed out in your post. My faith in God and His Word is not threatened by these terms because He is, as one has commented here, the Creator of all and Lord of all.

The last four years have been a disaster. We elected a smooth talker who didn’t have a clue as to how to be President of the greatest country in the world. Before he destroys us completely with his socialistic agenda, let’s elect a man who a proven track record of success, Obama belongs back in Chicago with his buddy Rahm Emmanuel where there are more monthly killings than in Afganistan. I hope my fellow service veterans will join with me in voting for Romney for President of the United States of America.

God (YHWH) alone is THE CREATOR. He alone created nature and man, and then gave man dominion over nature. Man alone was created in the image of God. Man can not receive rights from that which he was given dominion over.

Saying that our rights come from nature and God is the equivalent of saying that a woman’s ability to give birth is both a miracle and a natural process. The danger comes when we claim rights as issuing from nature and ignore God.

God is nature, it is just one of his many wonderous forms, Geof.

I wonder when nature gave us our rights? Our rights come from God alone. I think Ryan is right on a lot, but wrong on this one.

I don’t think he is wrong, I believe I heard him say our rights come from both God and Nature, God made nature.
God is Nature, apart from Him or nature is nothing.
