Washington D.C. – Representatives from The Association of Mature American Citizens attended the 2009 Values Voter Summit from September 18th through 20th, held at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington D.C.  The event, which was sponsored by FRCAction (The Legislative Action Arm of the Family Research Council), drew thousands of supporters, sponsors, and exhibitors from 49 states (all except Vermont).

Dozens of prominent speakers were featured, including former Governors Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee, Governor Rick Perry (R-Texas), Rep. Michele Bachmann (US House of Representatives), Rep. Mike Pence (Congressman, IN), Bill O’Reilly, Stephen Baldwin, Bill Bennett, and many others.

The event provided insight into some of the difficult issues that are pulling at the fabric of our faith, family, and freedom.  It also gave us the opportunity to introduce AMAC to some of our elected officials and to learn where they stand on key issues.

AMAC was very warmly welcomed, thanked, and encouraged.  An overwhelming number of seniors expressed their dissatisfaction with AARP, particularly with AARP’s stance on health care reform.  Many visitors told us that they had either returned their AARP membership cards or never joined in the first place.

This was, no doubt, an event organized and attended by conservative voters.  As put by Tony Perkins, President of FRCAction:

“Some political pundits say that ‘values’ are passe’ and should have no bearing on the political process.  We’re to prove them wrong.  Millions of Americans still believe in God, the sanctity of human life, marriage as the union of a man and woman, religious liberties, and the rule of law.  And we will not be silent.

Great nations rise to great occasions.  The theme of this year’s Summit is simple: ‘Rise to the Challenge, Rally to the Cause.’  We live in an era dominated by leaders who counsel us to expect scarcity, to expand government control of every facet of our economy, to choose a culture of death, and to live in a culture of fear.  These forces forget that the watchwords of the American people are hope and confidence – to worship God, to dream, to nourish the young people and to build our families and our future.  The Values Voter Summit 2009 is designed to shout out these watchwords and set a course of action.”

Other areas of concern centered around the federal funding of organizations such as Planned Parenthood and Acorn.
